I have a 4090 and have set the curve to 2850mhz at 995mv. I got the number 2850mhz from the max effective clock I was getting with a normal full overclock as reported by hwinfo, then lowered the voltage to the lowest to maintain that frequency. Now I get almost the same performance with 50 to 100 less watts power usage.

My man, that’s a really good undervolt! The RTX 4090 is better binned than the RTX 4080, so you generally can push it 100Mhz higher, as I talk about in my 4090 UV video. It’s the way to go, thanks for commenting!

This guy was manually undervolting to 700mv and still getting 3000mhz. But not effective clock speed, it was really 1807mhz. Clock stretching and the 1.7v limit on the newer cards are 🧢

I think i hit the silicon lottery because my 4080 does 2840 at 975 and it could go lower voltage even down to 925 but it is not stable in overwatch. Everyother game was fine at 925. Ow is an undervolting hell.

  • @Sprinkles-BtE

I've been experimenting with this all day following the advice from this video with my new 4070 Ti Super (which is based on the same gpu die as the 4080, just stripped down a bit). It most definitely works but one thing I notice while using 3dmark TimeSpy as my testing: With the curve flattening at 900mv as instructed, Timespy's framerate will stutter harshly right before starting the scene on both graphic tests before smoothing out for the rest of the segment's completion. This does not happen with a regular, unflatten curved. Also, on the second graphic test, in the beginning until about the middle of the segment, my memory clock will stay strangely underclocked before restoring to my set value. Again, this doesn't happen with a regular curve. I tried at 925mv as well and it's the same behavior. This may be just isolated to 3dmark/TimeSpy, but my fear is, it may cause obscure stuttering & frametime issues when GPU load is fluctuating wildly while in-game (for example, transitioning from low-load-indoor to high-load-outdoor - just a theory though). If someone could test 3dmark TimeSpy with their flattened curve undervolt with their 4070 or 4080, that'd be ideal.
I eventually came to realize, you really get the same desired effect by just using MSI afterburner's Power Limit slider while maintaining the smooth curve and you don't get those harsh stutters nor the weird memory clock behavior. After finding my most aggressive but still stable overclock setting (+230 which raises the entire curve evenly, +2000mhz memory), simply sliding the Power Limit percentage down effectively accomplishes the same thing (lower temps, lower power consumption) while still getting the benefits of higher boost clock speeds for when a given scene isn't as GPU intensive, where a flatten curve wouldn't allow because you set a harsh cut-off point in frequency as well. So in essence, if I want my system to go as fast as possible, I now just slide my Power Limiter to 112% (the limit). If I want to reduce temps/power-draw, slide it down to say 88%... or as far down as you want to go, really. I feel this is a better solution... at least for me. Regardless, I really appreciate the video as it gave me the understanding necessary in MSI's Afterburner freq/voltage curve editor which allowed me to find my solution. Thank you!

One downside however is that if I start Cyberpunk it crashes on startup or at best lets me play few minutes then it crashes anyway. If I revert GPU to default settings the game runs fine but then obiviously power consumption and fans noise increases. I play Cyberpunk in 4k at max settings with balanced DLSS.
Could you advise what setting I could manipulate to overcome this problem with Cyberpunk? Perhaps I should increase/decrease memory clock a bit? Change (under)voltage curve to be less agresive (less undervolting)? Many thanks again for this guide.

@@ImWateringPSUs thanks fo replying. I had to slightly increase the voltage. At 100% usage max temperatures are at 62C with power usage dropping from 300W to 240W. Memory clock on +1400. All working great: same performance, less power and lower temperatures. Thanks again.

I came here just for the info, but also may considering applying this to my sis's 3060ti. she's been playing palworld, and idk why but that game refuses to utilize her card to any reasonable degree. She's paired with a 3950x that i also Oc'd and Co'd for her, so her chip is running at max speeds. Theres no bottleneck there.
Im thinking if i undervolt and co her gpu, it might utilize whatever headroom i give it better so at least it isnt perma locked to 60fps with crap 1% lows and stutter.
Also to some of you below saying this tip works for some of your games but not others, thats normal. I have a 4080 that i have several setting presets for specifically for this reason. Sometimes the setting you oc with or uv with are too aggressive for an application, as in it might not have enough power to maintain that load. Or, you could just be hitting the ceiling of what your silicon can do.
So for example, i have an "every day clock" that i know runs at any setting or game and gives me a nice little boost. Then i have my max clock i know this card can even possibly run at 1440p (my monitor res). my everyday clock for the core during boost is 2940 with memory running at 12000mhz. My max stays between 3020 and 3050 with the same 12000 on mem, however my max clock crashes when i rt at 4k.... also makes my gpu hit the mid 70s in temps. hence why i made the every day clock.
I would recommend you make presets as well, start with your most functional aggressive uv or oc and then work your way back towards stock till you find a compromise. also you need to be testing your settings on the most stressful game you own or intend to play with everything cranked.

  • @lunatik147

by undervolting you lower the stability of the card no? I'm asking why Nvidia 's enginers didn't set it lower , even more in the actual economical context which energy cost is more and more absurd..

    • @ImWateringPSUs
      @ImWateringPSUs  11 месяцев назад +3

Nope you won’t if done right. They don’t set it lower because with higher maximum boost clocks you can claim a higher generational improvement and higher scores on certain benches

With RTX 4000 we have an issue with effective core clock, so it’s better to do it this way! This method also wasn’t possible two years ago with the previous version of Afterburner
