    Gaga is terribly underrated as a songwriter because people tend to focus on the catchy hooks of her songs instead of actually paying attention to the lyrics and the metaphors in them, which are actually pretty smart, in my opinion.

    This part of the song Bad Romance is very confusing, but when you dig deeper, you can see how genius it was written:
    "I want your horror, I want your design
    'Cause you're a criminal as long as you're mine
    I want your love
    Love, love, love, I want your love (Uh)
    I want your psycho, your vertigo schtick (Hey!)
    Want you in my rear window, baby, you're sick"
    Gaga has stated in interviews that these lines are indeed a callback to the movies Psycho, Vertigo, and Rear Window all movies directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock films tend to focus on people’s descent into madness, and thus fit well with the rest of the song.
    “I want your horror,” in a metaphorical sense, refers to these Hitchcock “horror films.” Furthermore, in light of discovering these dark secrets that her lover harbors, she accepts him for all he is, seeing him as some kind of bad boy “criminal”.
    “I want your psycho” implies that Gaga craves her lover’s wild side. In addition, she wishes for her lover to behave like the characters from the movie Vertigo to fulfill her power fantasy. After all, in the film, the lead female Judy (played by Kim Novak) manipulates the lead male John Fergurson (played by James Stewart). Lastly, “want you in my rear window” implies a desire for anal s3x, as Gaga desires pleasure from her “rear”.
    Although the official lyric is “shtick”, Gaga makes no qualms in pronouncing it a bit more like “stick”. Thus, her lover’s “vertigo stick” is also referring to his genitalia. This could also be a reference to her earlier-released song “Lovegame” where the speaker expresses a desire to “take a ride on” her lover’s “disco stick.”
    And this part is:
    "Walk, walk, fashion, baby
    Work it, move that bitch crazy
    Walk, walk, passion, baby
    Work it, I'm a free bitch, baby"
    The line “move that bitch crazy” describes the “passion” with which this fictional model walks, but it also reflects the song’s greater meaning. In her “bad romance”, Gaga could be referring to her relationship as her “bitch,” to which she ardently dedicates herself.

      Thank you for this! Love the Hitchcock connection - that’s awesome! And yeah that’s more of what I always thought vertigo schtick meant lol, and the connection to disco stick makes so much sense.

    "I want your PSYCHO, your VERTIGO schtick, want you in my REAR WINDOW, baby you're sick" those are references to Alfred Hitchcock Suspense/Horror movies, in double (sexual) meaning of course, which is kinda brilliant lol
    She was very inspired by vintage Horror movies when she created the concept of 'The Fame Monster' album, the visuals, the aesthetic, the fashion remind of classic 50s Hollywood blonde stars, you know like the blonde girl in the King Kong movies or a glamorous vampire in a black & white film.
    And yes, you're right that it is about a toxic, codependent relationship, loving someone so much that she would want even the ugliest parts of him, the darkness in him, the things that nobody would want, all of it!
    And in my interpretation is wanting someone to love her so much, so desperately & madly in love (also reinforced by the "I want your Psycho") a man who gives a damn about her, that even when they're not together anymore, he would still care for her enough to want to get back at her, cuz she was so in love with a boy who one day told her that he doesn't love her anymore, that probably hurt her a lot, cuz when you don't have feelings for someone, you don't care, you don't give a shit, but in this twisted horror story thinking is like, "I want you to hate me too cuz at least that way you'd still care for me & think of me" and that's why it's a Bad Romance.
    Of course everything she does has multiple meanings & interpretations, so in a way is based on her real life true experiences with love, but also exaggerating it to a very sickly needy psycho toxic thinking (not exactly how she thinks in real life, but she's playing a "character" in the song... and funny enough she's really playing that character once again in the Joker 2 movie now, as Harley Quinn in love with the Joker lol but that's another story 😅).
    Lastly, all the songs in her album "The Fame Monster" represent different "fears" that she would call "Monsters".
    -Bad Romance, the fear of Love Monster (being attracted to unhealthy romances);
    -Monster, the fear of Sex and Relationships Monster (fear of attachment & fear of loving something that is bad for you);
    -Telephone, fear of Suffocation Monster (for working too much that she cannot enjoy life or have a time for herself);
    -So Happy I Could Die, fear of Addictions Monster (alcohol & drugs);
    -Teeth, fear of Truth Monster (in a way fear of reality, she rathers the fantasy of Art, or the lie, that she created in Gaga, to hide, cuz she didn't wanna deal with her traumatic reality);
    -Speechless, fear of Death Monster (wrote that song to make her Dad have open heart surgery to save his life, cuz he didn't wanna do it);
    -Dance in the Dark, fear of Self Monster (her own insecurities, in her body and self image);
    -Alejandro, fear of Men Monster (longing for the affection of her ex-lovers but fearing commitment & abandonment).

    “I want your psycho, your vertigo schtick, want you in my rear window, baby you’re sick” - ‘Vertigo’, ‘rear window’, and ‘psycho’ are all Hitchcock movies. Alfred Hitchcock was the master of suspense. She’s saying she wants his masterful suspense and horror.
    And on the “walk walk fashion baby’ bridge, I think this her finding her own power before owning the chorus.

    What did you take away from these songs?
    Other thoughts I had while editing:
    - "I want, I want, I want" in song 1 -> "You're giving me, giving me, giving me" in song 2. IT IS SO THE SAME GUY.
    - Lover's revenge - I bet that guy IS with another woman, and Lady Gaga wants that person's revenge i.e., she wants to steal her man??
    - if she had a highway, she'd run BECAUSE SHE WANTS TO STAY - How did I not see that? It connects to the line after: If you could find a dry way, I'd forever be still (ie., I'D STAY)
    - "cut through all this worn-out leather" - it SHOULD be easy to cut through, but it's not, and that's the point UGH
    - “design” could connect to “fashion”

      -Bad Romance & Million Reasons are about different guys, however she tends to generalize many of her experiences in love with all of her ex-lovers, so Bad Romance can be about more than one guy but constantly being attracted by unhealthy romances in plural, and Million Reasons can also be about all her past lovers & not just her ex-fiancee Taylor Kinney (she had recently broken up her engagement with him when she wrote that song).
      **Funny fact: She met this boyfriend/fiancee, Taylor Kinney, on the set of a Music Video of a song she wrote specifically for her ex Lüc Carl, who is probably the main inspiration of Bad Romance probably & many of her earlier songs, she was with him before being famous, they broke up, was with another guy called Matt "Dada" Williams who worked with her creating fashion & props for her shows during her debut album The Fame & early The Fame Monster, wrote Bad Romance at this point to Matt, but also thinking abt Lüc, broke with Matt, came back to New York to be back with Lüc, wrote BornThisWay album inspired on Lüc cuz he was/is a metal head, broke up with him again, met Taylor on set of Lüc's song "Yoü & I" lol
      -"I want your design, it's a reference to fashion too, cuz her boyfriend at the time worked in fashion, Matt was the Creative Director of 'Haus of Gaga', but now he works at Givenchy I think.
      -Lover's Revenge, I posted a lengthy reply on your video too but I'll kinda repeat some of what I believe is about, is her wanting him to not only love her so madly & desperately, but to care so deeply about her that even if they're not together, he would still care enough about her to want to get back at her, because if he hates her at least he still feels for her & think about her. Not giving a shit about her, not caring, not feeling anything, nor love or hate, that'd be like somehow worse for her lol of course she's exaggerating it to big proportions, she's playing a dramatic character in the song, she's not really like that in real life, but yeah, it's inspired by real life experiences of being attracted to unhealthy love relationships & codependency.
      -In "Million Reasons" she repeats STAY a lot towards the end, I think is very clear to me "You're giving me a Million Reasons to let you go, but baby I just need one good one to stay" it's a woman telling a man to listen to her, to sit down and have a deep honest real talk, because apparently this man is unable to tell her "I love you" or "I need you", seems to me that's about someone so disconnected from her, she just wants to be loved and understood, but he doesn't listen or he walks away afraid of opening to her about his true feelings, like why can't he tell her that one thing that can make her stay, or show it to her? His incapability to love, to be there for her or show her understanding and support, I mean from the perspective of a woman (or anyone in a love relationship really who feels they're the only ones trying) that hurts a lot, so yeah, she wants to stay because she loves him so much, so deeply, but he's leaving her with no other option but to let him go 😢...
      -The worn out leather is clearly a reference to his heart, she can't get to him and his emotions because he has this barrier and he's incapable of loving freely and openly and showing his core feelings to her, in other words, to be vulnerable with her, sure he can be there for sex and other things, but not emotionally, and if a guy or girl can't be there for you emotionally, what's the point?

    Hi Megan! I really enjoyed your reaction to Gaga's lyrics, the shock on your face, when you try to put together the lyrics, is priceless lol, to give you some "lore" about bad romance... yes, it is about being in love with her best friend (not reciprocated), at the time, he was in charge of all her fashion so the bridge "walk, walk fashion baby" could be a direct reference to him, i believe he is now the creative director of Givenchy.
    THE FAME MONSTER album (which has "bad romance") is about the "monsters" she encountered once she became famous; bad romance is her "love monster", here she explains it ( ruclips.net/video/FsMtkYfwCIo/видео.htmlsi=xVPdhtGuF9ucNnLf ) one thing I appreciate of her as an artist, she is a master of giving a concept album if you listen to one of her full albums from start to finish there is a sense of cohesiveness that I don't feel with a lot of artists.
    If you are up for it, maybe making a series about Gaga lyrics, here are my recommendations:
    Album - Song
    -THE FAME MONSTER - Dance in the dark
    -BORN THIS WAY - Marry the night, Judas, Sheibe, Hair
    - CHROMATICA - Replay, 911
    These songs are some of my favorites and I think it would be fun to see your analysis of the lyrics !!

    I see bad romance as her singing about her lover but also about having a toxic loving relationship with fame and the music industry. In this music video, she goes from an innocent, baby eyed girl that gets groomed to be auctioned off to millionaires for sex to a fierce femme fatale that kills her buyer. Knowing her past as a sexual abuse survivor of the music industry, it all makes me think that she in love with fame and music, but there's the horror, the ugly, the crime that comes with it.

  • @infsai

    And no, definitely "Million Reasons" (2016) guy isn't the guy she sung about in "Bad Romance" (2009). "Bad Romance" was written in late July 2009, so it's most probably about Luc Carl, a bar owner she was on and off from 2005 to 2011, so he inspired a huge chunk of her songs back in her first projects, such as "You and I", which had a music video starring Taylor Kinney, with whom she was from 2011 to 2016 - and "Million Reasons", alongside most of Joanne songs, is about him. Sooo, it's not about the same guy, but without the first guy, there wouldn't be that second one haha
