Only his lower chest has a hole. The organs that are placed there are his intestines, stomach, kidney and liver. The ones harmed are the intestines and only a bit of the stomach. So, if Michael was to eat, his stomach would push the food back up his throat as the digestive system isn't working properly. This means Michael can eat, however, the food isn't completely digested and is soon thrown up after 17 hours. The reason it's 17 hours is because that's how long it takes for food to get to the small intestines.
