Where devs fail modders prevail
It's interesting to see the original intent for the orc race in ROC, from a design philosophy standpoint. ROC orcs resemble the orcs from WC1 and WC2, where healing is totally not an option in their tech tree. Instead, orcs were given necromancy to compensate for the lack of healing (necrolytes in WC1 and death knights in WC2). Since their units die more frequently, the corpses could be raised to improve the longevity of their armies.
And since necromancy is no longer an option for WC3 because of lore reasons, I think the pillage upgrade was supposed to be the compensation for the lack of healing. Without healing, orcs would need to replace their units more often compared to the other races so they need to have a lot of resources for that. And at the very least, there's also healing wards even though a lot of time and resources should be invested before eventually having access to it.
That's how I see the respective races' main attributes in wc3 from a lore standpoint:
Night elves: stealthy units who set up ambushes (archers/huntresses' ambush ability + chopped trees turning into treants); they're the masters of ranged attacks (wide variety of ranged units + POTM trueshot aura)
Orcs: they have the strongest melee units (grunts, taurens) which can "raid enemy villages" (pillage ability (only for greenskins)); no other race can compete with them when it comes to brute force
Humans: very technical units; most advanced defensive capabilities (different towers, improvable masonry and defensive spells (paladin + sorc/priests))
Undead: their power grows stronger as their units die (necrowagon, dark ritual, shades, etc.); adept at turning death into a profitable business model
Used to play orcs in RoC and most good people would do FS to wolf-creep and rush to casters since tier 2 cost 90 lumber and there was no healing troops.
Healing wards was the only real answer to the healing issue.
Back when casters got damage upgraded along with new abilities it was totally OP.
Shamans would get 17-21 piercing at master level and bloodlust.
Hence FS --- mass shamans (bloodlust), add a few witch drs on top and if the match got far enough, taurens with pulverize.
TC second hero.
Used to be a blast to play.
Most things died from bloodlusted shaman lightning balls before they hit the tauren wall.
I fondly remember being crushed by Orc mass caster.
No wonder they gave dispell to all races.
Did humans have better spellcasters? Human spellcasters always seemed busted to me when I looked at other races.
@@bobbaxter57
Orc and UD didn't have AoE dispell and other Humans didn't have Breakers, so Human casters were relatively stonger.
@@horsemumbler1 Yeah and imo what's even crazier about the whole spell potential from HU is that brilliance aura is so op; when a human gets lvl 2 or 3 brilliance aura he can basically cast infinity spells with a relatively low number of spellcasters whereas other races would have to upgrade to master level and get a TON of them
@@horsemumbler1 undead didn't have dispel at all but anti-magic shell granted immunity but it could be dispelled.
That's another thing I'm happy to see my memory wasn't betraying me on lol. So many units can dispel in TFT that I was wondering how I missed it when I was a ROC player back in the day. I used to play a lot, too!
My bad about minimap, discovered later in the game
11:42 -- did he seriously *NOT* chain lightning that Red Drake ?! O_o
Wtf grubby ?!
*N00B !! :D*
.
4:27 -- ymm... Spirit Tower's damage is *exactly the same* as in The Frozen Throne?! O_o
.
As someone who never really got to play much TFT, this game confirmed a lot of stuff I've been thinking I never saw when I was playing ROC for many years such as checking items by clicking on enemy heroes... it was so long ago for me that I thought maybe I was just unfamiliar with the importance of it and never did it, but it seems that it truly wasn't possible! Also felt a bit vindicated when you mentioned the grunts weren't used as much because that's exactly how I remembered it too.
On that map tower creeping was crazy
What is *THE MAP ??* :O
Why did Grubby hide THE MAP ?? :O
.
please don't cover the minimap..
Neat game. The attack types and armor types aren’t from RoC, tho. Or were the new types released in a pre-TfT patch that I’m forgetting about.
Yes the attack and Armor are different in reign of chaos
No hero attack/armor nor magic attack. Also, no tomes either :O
The first!! for the first time. Come on Grubby!
In Reign of Chaos:
Creeping was more rewarding not just getting past level 5 but higher bounties and the items you got were much more interesting on average, instead of the boring ones we get today.
Like the old orb of lightning that always purged with every hit or Orb of fire that did +12 damage (okay that wasn't in RoC by the time TFT came out but...)
Steam Tanks, Gyrocopters (they look better than FM), Catapults and Ballistae. Instead of Siege engines, Flying machines demolishers and glaive throwers.
Anti-magic shell granted immunity to spells which meant you could have either unholy frenzy or AMS
Magic immune also meant immune to ensnare devour, and web.
Creeps had better abilities instead of nerfed one which meant mercenaries had better abilities.
Goblin shop had different items all useful, like Wand of Negation and gem of true seeing.
Huntress had medium armor which meant they weren't vulnerable to missile attacks but heavy melee units like knights were.
But doesn't reign of chaos heroes have normal attack instead of hero attack??
That's true, hero attack is a TFT thing
@@kennoth3297 yea.. anyways it makes me happy to see the community trying to keep this gem alive♥️💯
Orc is the worst race to play in ROC. They have no source of healing until Tier 3, which is very frustrating. Also a couple of points about this ROC iteration:
- burrows had fortified armor in ROC, not medium
- unarmored armor type was not a thing
- tomes would have had to be physically picked up before use, personally I'm glad they chose not to keep that one
Replying to myself to add that magic and hero attack damage were added in TFT as well, so this recreation of Reign of Chaos is not all that accurate
Reign of chaos is one of the best campaigns I’ve ever played.
why didnt chat tell Grubby, that he covers up the minimap?
oh, nevermind
Bridges with the grass texture look so wrong to me
I sure remember the good ol' RoC Batrider + Troll berserker rash strats only grubby could pull of
dont block the mini map :(
You intentionally blocked Minimap view to avoid being streamsnipped or it was Editor error ?
Anyone help me please? Is there any option to play roc ladder on w3cchampions? or just a cg? :((
does he not know the shop exsists in game one? healing scrolls are bis in roc
More games on Reign Of Chaos maps, it's an interesting topic!
Grubby can take RoC meta being an TFT veteran.
Covered up the mini map, rip.. 8:47 mini map unlocked.
man when you pulled aggro on the dragons that was very chaotic
Regarding piercing damage bonus to heavy armour, maybe the devs were thinking about chainmail for heavy armour. Chainmail is great against sword/axe/clever swipes, but arrows and projectiles tend to go through it.
Was so irritating you didn't use scroll of dead or book of the dead lol
How can i play Reign of Chaos in 2023?
W3C typical W from them.
Logically, piercing should be most effective against lightly armored or unarmored opponents - best way to go against heavy armor is with blunt force (so probably Siege Damage as the closest comparison in WC3). So yea, it's mostly just a balancing thing.
I really wish patch 1.01 from July 2002 were recreated in a custom map. With Storm Bolt stunning towers and instant TP scrolls. Would be a nice idea for the anniversary.

8:51 Thanks. ^_^
Minimap reveal Mr editor?
Grubster: Heal?
RoC: *NUH UH*
Witch Doctor: Ya man.
wth that was a real Red Zone in the middle haha
Thats more fun
ROC is very fun and fast paced and by comparison FT is so much more technical.
mass shamans and sorcs were pretty strong back in the days. no wonder they started to give AOE dispell skills in TFT
This is some hacked version of RoC. In original version caster units had normal or ranged attack type, not "magic". Also I'm pretty sure tomes of agility etc were not a thing in RoC
Hero and magic attacks and unarmored defence were added in RoC just weeks TFT came out.
ROC = POTM, keeper, and mass hypo riders.
Grubbs how did you start the game? With the new client you cant have ROC games ....
or what did you do? I love ROC and would like to play it again ...
Use warcraft champions
@@Kedustrolder but is there a ladder or just cg??
@@JakubKowthere is ladder but few play. This guy zeud even today is one of the top ladder players roc there
Thx
gggg
Reign of chaos is so scuffed lool that looked so hard to play
Not all the additions in TFT were all that positive, honestly.
The race-shops introduced a lot of balance issues among racial heroes, making some Heroes even more mandatory than others (DK for UD, AM for HU etc).
A lot of the added units (bats, breakers, destroyers) are some of the lamest and hideously anti-fun units.
Neutral Tavern heroes are not equally useful to all races, and some of them (panda) are so strong that they invalidate many strategies that could otherwise be viable vs some races.
TFT is a good expansion with many good changes but a lot of its additions had an overall negative impact on gameplay.
Man they really designed orcs with just a single, lategame, source of healing, huh?
And undead didn't have any dispell
Wand o negation
I hope to see more Reign of Chaos content!
i loved mass casters, it was so nice to play. now u rarely get to go doctors ~
RoC was the greatest game ever made
A harder game than FT for sure
thanks for the upload
POG, the ultimate game mode.
well they left attack type and armors from TFT so sad :(
Not really.
TTours PepeHands
Hero type attack.
Unarmored type defense.
Magic type attack for a casters.
Can't fool me. I know my ROC when I see it.
Love to see the old game content!
I really enjoy these non-standard maps. nice game
"You have been recognized as a bot we will issue a ban for you on this channel"
Grubby fucks
Did heroes had their own attack and armor type back then? Thought that was added in TFT.
Yes heroes have their damage type from the very beginning.
They had Hero Type armor, but normal damage ( footman type).
Hero damage was added in TFT indeeed @thehabibass you remember correctly.
Second? Lolol
The only logical sense for piercing doing more damage to heavy is pierce weapon are historically better at attacking the weak points in Heavy Armor, which tend to be joints.
Undead is op in roc
