- 京都の八坂神社で行われた節分祭。祇園東歌舞会の舞妓さんの奉納舞踊と舞踊後豆撒き。
古来より日本では季節の変わり目にこれまでの災厄を祓い、
これからの無事と繁栄への祈りを捧げてきました。
2月の「立春」の前日に行われる節分では、邪気を祓うとされる大豆を撒き、福を呼び込む行事が執り行われます。
その歴史は奈良時代まで遡るとされ、 疫病をもたらすとされた鬼を追い祓う行事が宮中で行われておりました。室町時代には現在のように豆を撒いて鬼を追い祓うという形が 民間でも行われるようになったとされます。
四花街の芸舞妓による舞踊奉納と豆撒きも行われ、 節分行事に華をそえてくれます。

Setsubun Festival held at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto. Maiko from the Gion Higashi Kabukai performed a votive dance and bean-throwing ceremony after the dance.
Since ancient times, Japanese people have prayed for safety and prosperity in the future and ward off misfortunes at the change of seasons.
On Setsubun, held on the day before the beginning of spring in February, an event is held in which soybeans, which are said to ward off evil spirits, are scattered to bring good fortune.
Its history is said to date back to the Nara period, when an event was held at the Imperial Court to drive away demons that were believed to bring epidemics. During the Muromachi period, it is said that the modern practice of scattering beans to drive away demons began to be practiced among the general public.
Dance offerings and bean-throwing ceremony by geisha from the four entertainment districts were also held, adding a touch of elegance to the Setsubun event.

What a beautiful tradition! 🙏✨ The Maiko dance performance is truly mesmerizing and adds a very special elegance to the Setsubun festival. It is so impressive how deeply rooted this ceremony is in Japanese culture and how it has passed on the meaning of protection and prosperity through the centuries. The moment when the beans are thrown to drive away evil and call in good is truly magical. It is amazing how much history and symbolism is in this event.
