One thing alywas confuses me. I read that things (suns and planets) we "see" out there were actually in the past positions. We see something because the light from that point comes into our eyes. So if we "see" a sun that is a million light years away. It means that that sun was there a million years ago. It's most likely not there anymore "right now". Action Lab please explain this.
That is true, you see things where they were and when they were when the light came out. So when astronomers say they just saw 2 black holes collide, that collision actually happened millions of years ago. But they did just saw it because the speed of light or gravitational waves are that slow.

During a galaxy merger, the question of stars hitting each other can be understood much more operational than just looking at the star itself, by instead seeing the star as a gravitational system, including planets and other orbiting things, like the Oort cloud. I'd say that stars affecting each others Oort clouds significantly constitutes a collision, leading to significant risk (chance?) of inner planets, like the Earth, being blasted by comets. If extinction becomes a real risk, it is a collision.
Your comment got me thinking, considering extinction risk first requires something that can go extinct. So another question could be: of all the stellar collisions (the kind you've described) during all the galactic collisions in the entire history of the visible universe, how many are expected to cause a full or partial extinction event (even if it's just bacteria)?

The low end of this scale means that microscopic life forms have a much lower extinction risk, unless in case of a much more severe sterilization event. Basically dinosaur-killer vs Earth/Thea collision. Risk of smaller events, like 65 MYA, is much higher than the ones making a planet one big volcano. Of course, the major factor is what life forms the planet already have. Based on a sample of one (yeah, not much), to me it appears that simple microscopic life is not at all uncommon on suitable planets, but complex life slow to form, and blasted by repeated extinction events, is much more rare, and with the long time from complex life to a technological civilization, the latter is a very, very rare thing. Even more rare due to us having no reason whatsoever to assume that such life forms (like us) can be expected to have an endurance even getting close to the dinosaur era. Basically, I'd expect it to be "normal" for galaxy mergers, even without outright major collisions, to be severely detrimental to life on quite a few planets, with many species going extinct. Due to the rarity of technological civilizations, such infestations would only be wiped out in a tiny part of galaxy mergers, as I'd still expect most stars (including the gravity system around the star) to not be severely affected.

Other than the faint glow of Andromeda getting slightly brighter, but most places on earth can't even see the milky way because of light pollution. Most constellations stars are not in the milky way or Andromeda, so the Zodiac signs wouldn't probably change either.
It's possible over millions of years that some orbits will shift. Probably not ours but it's not impossible. In any case our sun will have long since toasted our planet (or more likely humans will have moved the Earth and will have no problem dealing with anything Andromeda throws at us) so we really won't care. We will know several million years in advance of anything major. We'll just send up Bruce Willis.

Actually, depending on how that program is done, since the distance step (your velocity times deltatime) is way higher than the size of the stars, you could be actually hitting them but the program just detects that your are appearing behind them after being on front. But I'm pretty sure that the program might look for the stars that are between those steps. Just giving an idea that MAYBE you were to hit one but you went through it. Idk
the universe being comprised overwhelmingly of empty space is a great way to conserve the most amount of energy while producing, well, all of this. So the universe being pretty much empty while still teaming with stars, galaxies, the vast cosmic web, and of course, us, is just a result of a basic law of physics. conservation of energy.

consider also the LIGO observatories in Washington and Louisiana, measuring quantifiable compressions and waves in spacetime caused by gravimetric waves. What this means is that there's waves making all that empty space inside of us compress and stretch, if only minorly. I wonder what we might be able to do if we could actually influence such a power, what could we do with ourselves? With our world?
Considering it takes the energy of 2 black holes to collide and it changed spacetime by the 1/2 the width of a proton. I don't imagine we could do much with that. But human understanding is growing so who knows what the future will bring.

We do know the compression strength of space, so perhaps someone could find out the minimum energy required to make a measurable distortion in local spacetime... the trouble would be finding a way to detect that fluctuation in space without the instrument being affected by the shockwave in the air, I think. Sure it may not make a gravity wave on galactic scale, but to be able to control space to any degree terrestrially would be amazing.

Based on a sample of one (yeah, not much), to me it appears that simple microscopic life is not at all uncommon on suitable planets, but complex life slow to form, and blasted by repeated extinction events, is much more rare, and with the long time from complex life to a technological civilization, the latter is a very, very rare thing. Even more rare due to us having no reason whatsoever to assume that such life forms (like us) can be expected to have an endurance even getting close to the dinosaur era.
Basically, I'd expect it to be "normal" for galaxy mergers, even without outright major collisions, to be severely detrimental to life on quite a few planets, with many species going extinct. Due to the rarity of technological civilizations, such infestations would only be wiped out in a tiny part of galaxy mergers, as I'd still expect most stars (including the gravity system around the star) to not be severely affected.

@@GHOUSTTM Tides or seasons wouldn't change at all. Like you first commented. Only astronomers would notice anything. Other than the faint glow of Andromeda getting slightly brighter, but most places on earth can't even see the milky way because of light pollution. Most constellations stars are not in the milky way or Andromeda, so the Zodiac signs wouldn't probably change either.
It's possible over millions of years that some orbits will shift. Probably not ours but it's not impossible. In any case our sun will have long since toasted our planet (or more likely humans will have moved the Earth and will have no problem dealing with anything Andromeda throws at us) so we really won't care. We will know several million years in advance of anything major.
We'll just send up Bruce Willis.

Actually, depending on how that program is done, since the distance step (your velocity times deltatime) is way higher than the size of the stars, you could be actually hitting them but the program just detects that your are appearing behind them after being on front.
But I'm pretty sure that the program might look for the stars that are between those steps. Just giving an idea that MAYBE you were to hit one but you went through it. Idk
the universe being comprised overwhelmingly of empty space is a great way to conserve the most amount of energy while producing, well, all of this. So the universe being pretty much empty while still teaming with stars, galaxies, the vast cosmic web, and of course, us, is just a result of a basic law of physics. conservation of energy.

consider also the LIGO observatories in Washington and Louisiana, measuring quantifiable compressions and waves in spacetime caused by gravimetric waves. What this means is that there's waves making all that empty space inside of us compress and stretch, if only minorly. I wonder what we might be able to do if we could actually influence such a power, what could we do with ourselves? With our world?
Considering it takes the energy of 2 black holes to collide and it changed spacetime by the 1/2 the width of a proton. I don't imagine we could do much with that. But human understanding is growing so who knows what the future will bring.
@@MrT------5743 1/1000th the width, but how small would the effect of a pebble be when diffused over a ring that's been expanding for billions of years? how much energy would it take to make a much smaller, localized distortion to spacetime? Hard to say. We do know the compression strength of space, so perhaps someone could find out the minimum energy required to make a measurable distortion in local spacetime... the trouble would be finding a way to detect that fluctuation in space without the instrument being affected by the shockwave in the air, I think. Sure it may not make a gravity wave on galactic scale, but to be able to control space to any degree terrestrially would be amazing.
