- Mont Saint-Michel lies on an approx. 100 m high rock in the middle of the mudflats of the Normandy. At low tide one could reach it dry-shod, at high tide it forms an island. The magnificent architecture of its cloister appears in most different facets depending on position of the sun and weather. The interplay of light and shadow of the passing clouds let it appear in different colors and cause completely contrasting atmospheres.
Beginning of the 8th century, Aubert of Avranches built a first monastic establishment on the rock. During the Viking attacks, the island which withstood as a bulwark at the border between Normans and Brittany, was left to the Bretons, after the Normans had taken the peninsula Cotentin. A first church was built and the island was expanded fortress-like. In 965, the Benedictines founded the monastery and continued the expansion of the place. During the Hundred Years' War, the artillery of the Englishmen destroyed the town, but could not take the island. 1469, the newly founded Order of Knights of Saint Michel chose the abbey as their seat. The abbey developed into an important pilgrim place.
From 1790 to 1969, the Benedictines left the monastery. During the French Revolution, the abbey was converted into a prison and got the ridiculing name Mont-Libre (free mountain). Within the following decades it acquired the reputation as most abominable prison of France. The buildings became increasingly dilapidated . Only with Victor Hugo began a counter-movement. The prison was closed and the Mont Saint-Michel was declared a national monument (monument historique) in 1874 . Today, the religious of the community of Jerusalem live in the monastery and Saint Michel has become a magnet for tourists.
Shortly before our visit the newly built bridge, designed by the Austrian architect Dietmar Feichtinger, has been opened to pedestrians. After the old dam is removed, the bridge will make the island accessible, independent of the tides, and prevent sedimentation of the island. The tides are very strong, the tidal range is up to 14m. Since the mudflats are very shallow, very high velocities of flow can be observed, as you can see in our video.

Mont-Saint-Michel liegt auf einem ca. 100 m hohen Felsen mitten im Wattenmeer der Normandie. Bei Ebbe könnte man sie trockenen Fußes erreichen, bei Flut bildet sie eine Insel. Die großartige Architektur ihres Klosters erscheint in unterschiedlichsten Facetten, je nach Sonnenstand und Wetter. Das Licht- und Schattenspiel der vorbeiziehenden Wolken lassen sie in unterschiedlichsten Farben erscheinen und erzeugen völlig gegensätzliche Stimmungen.
Aubert von Avranches errichtete ein Anfang des 8. Jahrhunderts ein erstes Heiligtum auf dem Felsen. Während der Wikingerangriffe wurde die Insel den Bretonen überlassen, die als Bollwerk an der Grenze zur Bretagne den Normannen standhielt, nachdem die Wikinger die Halbinsel Cotentin eingenommen hatten. Eine erste Kirche wurde erbaut und die Insel festungsartig ausgebaut. 965 gründeten die Benediktiner das Kloster und der Ausbau der Anlage wurde massiv fortgesetzt. Im Hundertjährigen Krieg zerstörte die Artillerie der Engländer zwar die Ortschaft, konnte die Insel aber nicht einnehmen. 1469 wählte der neu gegründete Ritterorden de Saint Michel die Abtei als Sitz. Die Abtei entwickelte sich zu einem bedeutenden Pilgerort.
Von 1790 bis 1969 verließen die Benediktiner das Kloster. Während der französischen Revolution wurde wurde die Abtei in ein Gefängnis umgewandelt und erhielt verhöhnender Weise den Namen Mont-Libre. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten eignete es sich den Ruf als abscheulichstes Gefängnis Frankreichs an. Die Gebäude verfielen zunehmend. Erst mit Viktor Hugo setzte eine Gegenbewegung ein. Das Gefängnis wurde geschlossen und der Mont -Saint-Michel wurde 1874 zum nationalen Denkmal (Monument historique) erklärt. Heute leben wieder Ordensleute der Gemeinschaft von Jerusalem im Kloster und Saint Michel hat sich zum Touristenmagneten entwickelt.
Kurz vor unserem Besuch war die neuerbaute, vom österreichischen Architekt Dietmar Feichtinger entworfene Steg-Brücke für Fußgänger eröffnet worden. Sie soll, nachdem der alte Damm abgetragen ist, die Insel wieder rundherum für die Gezeiten zugänglich machen und eine Verlandung der Insel verhindern. Die Gezeiten sind hier sehr mächtig, der Tidenhub beträgt bis 14m. Da das Watt sehr flach ist ergeben sich dadurch sehr hohe Fließgeschwindigkeiten, die sich auch in unserem Video gut beobachten lassen.

I was there as a child, about 50 years ago; Mont St. Michel has been in the forefront of my brain all these years;; wish I could go back. if you can afford to, GO..you won't be disappointed...seeing Europe adds so much to our brains..instead of just being in America..
