- Witness the crowning of Miss Universe 1988 Porntip Nakhirunkanok of Thailand. Miss Universe 1988, the 37th Miss Universe pageant, was held on 24 May 1988 at the Lin Kou Stadium in Taipei, Taiwan. Crowned by Cecilia Bolocco of Chile. 66 contestants competed in this year. For the first time ever, the 4 of the 5 finalists were from Asia with contestants from Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and Thailand. Miss Mexico was the only contestant from South America to enter the top 5 ranking!

Porntip/Bui was so smart to enter the Miss Thailand pageant instead of Miss USA as she was living and studying in California at the time. She knew her best chance was to win the Miss Universe crown was to complete in Miss Thailand as a fluent speaker of Thai and English. From what I know, she was a great Miss Universe and did lots of good things for Thai children and Thai commerce. She is a wife and mother and is still involved in philanthropy using the name Bui Simon.
It was miss mexico who really won they just gave it to the wrong person ! And they didn’t want to fix the mistake ! Mexico was better looking it’s obvious.
@@kimsotelo6952 -- In the end it's not about looks as all the contestants are beautiful. Furthermore, Miss Mexico wasn't even the first runner-up, so whatever conspiracy you believe, there is no way it is true.
Considering the spirit of the time, Porntip probably wouldn't even make it to a screening.

What I noticed miss universe was very natural. Make-up not overdone, dress plain lines. So her beauty was the focus.

I was so torn this year. For me, of all the years, this had to be one of the toughest decisions. Porntip is so elegant and had everything. My heart was pulling for Korea, she was so sweet. I mean honestly when it came down to both, I really didn't know which way they'd go, but I had a feeling it was going to be Porntip, she had outscored Korea in each event, but still to date, Miss Korea is my favorite contestant to have entered a pageant. Oh and by the way it's 33 years later and they still both look gorgeous, timeless elegance.

También pensé, estoy de acuerdo en que las mujeres asiáticas son muy hermosas, entre las dos últimas la que quedó en segundo lugar fue mucho más hermosa, pero lo que pasa detrás de este concurso la mayoría NO lo entiende, hay mucho interés político seguro. , no fue posible verlo todo. Los tigres asiáticos de finales de los 80 y principios de los 90 estaban ganando fuerza, por eso tantos asiáticos al final de un concurso
