Putting a 25% tarif on Canada is not just a loss for Canada but also for the US as it wil rise the cost of goods. Important to note that Canada will retaliate by increasing the cost of energy which it is currently selling at discount to the US. The reason the US is at a net deficit with Canada is due to this importation of energy. So this will create a double hit of inflation to the US and Canadians will be able to remain competitive with the tarifs due to its low dollar.
Canadian here, go ahead Trump impose your tariffs! Let us know how your approval rates go when gas goes up $1 USD a gallon. Also who the hell still uses gallons?
If they really want to screw the US, cut off all exports of oil to the US until Trump lifts tariffs. The US gets over 50% of its imported oil from Canada. The magatards bitched and moaned about gas prices. That would cause prices to go up faster than they are now. As an American, it would suck, but I'd fully support Canada if they chose to do so.
Canada DOES share a border with France and Greenland... Though how cool it would be for no more visas and cheaper European university, I doubt the next expected to be Conservative cabinet will want to join the EU and not prioritize Canadian independence.
As a Canadian, I was initially deeply concerned about trumps announcements and the idea of being annexed into the United states, it's something id physically fight if necessary, a losing battle sure, but Canadians aren't American. In my bloodlust and tactical scortched earth planning I COMPLETELY forgot about the EU. So thank you, thank you for reminding me that there is in fact still hope, and that there is still democracy in this world.
As an American I thought annexing canada was a dumb uninvited joke at first but a lot of Americans are making a big deal about it, I'm sorry for my president my northern brothers and sisters.
I know this was supposed to be a silly kind of video, but let me just say: As a Canadian, when I heard the Ode to Joy start to play with the Friendship Flag (TM) on proud display, I felt a kind of euphoric relief of stress - a sensation of “oh, it’s *finally over*” and “thank God *we’re free at last* - that I never would have expected. It’s so, so tiring being neighbours with the United States, and it really can feel like a toxic and dependant relationship at times. I know it was silly, but it was silly *with sincerity*, and even just the joking suggestion of having another option, another partner who would free us from our dependence on America, of joining with like-minded democracies that share and support our values instead of mocking and threatening them - it was wild. It was good. It gave me *hope*. Siliconversations, I know you probably didn’t mean much by it, but you made us a Friendship Flag (TM), and that really counts for something. I’m getting more invilved with politics this year, and now I’m *definitely* bringing a Pro-EU fervor with me. Realistically we’ll never join the EU, but maybe we could join the EEA and strengthen our NATO ties. God, I want this so badly now.
That's honestly so unexpected. I never thought about Canadians actually wanting to have much to do with the EU, since they got the US right at their border for cooperation, but i guess trump makes weird things possible. I'm all for it, really.
absolutely would not - they’re a sinking ship, can’t even reach proper nato targets, just like Canada it would be the blind leading the blind Trudeau is similar to Macron, Starmer & others - he just stepped down.. you think canadians want MORE of that? 😂
one thing that was always interesting to me is the fact that Trump often has respect for dictators and often seems to quote them along with some good relations. in my opinion i believe its him probably admiring or envy of their ability to make any change they want without being abrupted.
Trump is the only US president to have met the most amount of dictators in US history. and shook hands with them smiling. I don't think him being envious of dictators is farfetched.
Just goes to show how mad the US has become. If someone else was threatening to annex them, they would grabbing their guns but they expect Canada to roll over and/or be grateful.
What? Trump is the only one saying this. Why are you equating the entire country of 300 million to a single person who is just saying this to get attention, with no plans of actually doing this?
There's already the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement but as a Canadian, I wouldn't mind deeper ties with our democracy loving friends in Europe.
Also, can we talk about how the US already has like... two or three territories that it controls that would LOVE to be states, and have been trying to be states for years?? Like Puerto Rico should 100% be a state before something crazy like Canada or Greenland.

I should have been more vocal about my own support for this pun. Here I thought you didn't need my encouragement, because clearly this is a man who has it all together!
Honestly wish you could though I don't think the US government will let any state leave, not just Texas and the former Confederacy. Your state wishing to leave though could be an issue for the US as California is very rich
@djangel3108 Yep, California would still be one of the world's richest economies even if it was an independent country. The Unites States ABSOLUTELY would not let that kind of thing slide.
As a Canadian, I personally love the Americans, the Europeans and most people around the world. I am very happy here at home in Canada. Even if we are very close to the US and have many influences in our culture from the US, we are indeed different. I wouldn't want to be living in the US especially with this leader. All I can say is to simply remember that leaders are only there for a very short time in history and we will continu to be neighbours once they are gone.
As a Canadian, I support the entrance into the EU. There is a movement in Canada, encouraged by Brexit, to annex Scotland and Northern Ireland so that Canada would have European territory to join the EU.
Of course we should be pursuing closer economic and diplomatic ties with the EU, but it’s a mistake to assume the larger U.S. economy would overwhelm Canada’s in a direct trade war. The fact is, the U.S. buys a lot more from us than we buy from them. We can get buy without American oranges and cars far more easily than they a get by without Canadian oil and electricity. 🇨🇦
I have friends in Canada, they have no desire to move to the US. Though taxes are high in Canada, Canadians get more from those taxes, Healthcare being a major one. The US being so powerful, yet it's people not being able to afford basic preventative care and often going into debt with serious medical issues arise is crazy. A MRI is easily $3500 without insurance, and common insurance will only pay 50-70%...leaving a $1500 bill for a quick and fairly common diagnostic test. Canada has many different laws than the US. Why people thought a wealthy narcissist at the tail end of his life was the best option is beyond me. Frankly, neither option was good and both parties are absurd. I don't know why people even bothered to vote.
The reason Trump won was that the Democratic Party ran one of the worst campaigns possible, and have seemingly abandoned the ideas of economic progressivism, that makes them popular. If the Democratic Party ran on a platform of comprehensive healthcare reform and fighting large conglomerates that would be far more attune to the issues that many working class Americans make. Because running on being marginally better than the Republicans is not attractive.
@@NUCLEARARMAMENTYeah but paying for an MRI is not the same thing as paying for the R&D. That’s the company’s job, not the consumer’s. The US healthcare system is a total scam.
If they can afford to offer them cheaply in the rest of the world, they can afford to offer them cheaply in the US. The only reason they dont is the lack of political will to pay the R&D costs with tax payer money as should be done, and force the healthcare industrial complex to not charge end users @@NUCLEARARMAMENT
For most people who aren't rich, taxes are actually the same or lower in Canada than they are in the US. It's been a few years since I looked into this but last time I did the math the threshold was around 100K household income - if you made less than that then generally taxes are lower in Canada, and if you made more than that taxes are lower in the US. Of course it depends on the state and province, I think I took an average.

Of course we should be pursuing closer economic and diplomatic ties with the EU, but it’s a mistake to assume the larger U.S. economy would overwhelm Canada’s in a direct trade war.
US R&D costs on medical equipment subsidizes the rest of the world, which is why they can afford to offer the services cheaper in other countries.
