  • democracynow.org - Six months since Hurricane Maria battered the island of Puerto Rico, the island is the site of a pitched battle between wealthy investors-particularly from the technology industry-and everyday Puerto Ricans fighting for a place in their island’s future. The Puerto Rican government has pushed for a series of privatization schemes, including privatizing PREPA, one of the largest public power providers in the United States, and increasing the number of privately run charter schools and private school vouchers. For more, we speak with best-selling author and journalist Naomi Klein, author of “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism.” Her latest piece for The Intercept, where she is a senior correspondent, is “The Battle for Paradise: Puerto Ricans and Ultrarich 'Puertopians' Are Locked in a Pitched Struggle over How to Remake the Island.”

people forget Puerto Ricans are natural born citizens of the United States and can move freely between the States but because they are not a state they cannot vote. and actually Puerto Rico has been trying to boost their economy but because of the United States government laws and policies it's been hindering them

This has been going on in Africa for decades.

it's been going on in africa since the slave trade, it's been going on in india, asia and the middle east for a century or more, it's been going on in south america, central america, and the carribbean since the spanish inquisition.

So? BTW, Puerto Rico is part of the USA and the people are USA citizens and have fought in all its wars since 1917. Because it happens in Africa we should not care?

Vivi Valentine I think you missed the sarcasm. I’m pointing out that this has been happening for a long time in Africa and it never makes the news and no one cares. I’m saying that we should care, because their suffering is treated as irrelevant.

Hello! Need for you guys to get a hold of Alexandra Lugaro, who was an official candidate for Governor of Puerto Rico during the 2016 elections. Puerto Rico is not only going through a hurricane crisis, but piece by piece our island will be sold, closed and or will be privatize. They are taking workers rights away and they just elected a new CEO head of the electrical company, Walter Higgins paying him a good 450,000 plus a year. Yeah, paying him more than what Obama got paid being chief of state. They are taking us back into the 1930s. Massive migration once workers lose all rights, retired lose their petitions, more school are on the list to be closed. Please, I urge you to call Mrs. Lugaro and interview her. We need help to get the word out. A good story that will help educate what the Federal Fiscal Board and Governor is doing to us on the island.

It only takes loosening 2-4 bolts and disconnecting one electrical plug to be able to remove PV panels ahead of hurricanes, especially those over a cat 3 (which is what most solar arrays are designed to withstand). It's just worth the effort / cost. Puerto Rico should REBUILD SOLAR.

In South Africa, we call this type of' privatisation 'state capture' -- not exactly the same, but too similar for any free-thinking person to find comfortable or acceptance.

I don't watch all Democracy Now content or like all of it, but I saw name "Naomi Klein" and auto clicked. Wish they did content like this more often.

Come to think of it, I dislike most news networks, even independent ones. I watch based upon the story and the speaker. Democracy Now did a good one on the 15 years of the Iraq war today but not all of their content is good. I watch based upon subject matter and intellectual integrity of the speaker. Honestly I prefer to watch people like Naomi Klein, Noam Chomsky, Richard Wolf, Richard Dawkins, Bernie Sanders, John Pilger, Carl Sagan, Christopher Hitchens, Howard Zinn, Nell Irvin Painter, Bill Maher, Kyle Kulinsky, David Pakman, David Harvey, Glenn Greenwald, Cornell West, ect. I watched this based upon it being from Naomi Klein.
Honestly, its just better to read books or do audiobooks.

Puerto Rico has been a major producer of pharmaceuticals for years. Favorable business due to low paid workers. I & my partner worked for some wealthy New Jersey people, rich from the drug business. Humacao has a neighborhood over looking the sea, Las Palmas, filled with huge homes. We worked in one. Aside from Las Palmas & San juan, PR was depressed looking everywhere else. Automobile Traffic was the worse of all the 50 US states.

I woukld like to see an interview take place between Ms. Klein and Marx Kaiser. They appear to be in Puerto Rico attending Organized Economic Conferences, but come out with different Impressions as to what is Going On in the Island. Keiser criticism of Ms Klein seems to be good at glance, but it would be good to hear both claims at the same time!

But doesn't the island want people with money to go in and spend their money ON THE ISLAND?
I've told many friends to go visit the island now to help support companies who hire people too that they can get paid.
Remember there are other islands in the caribbean competing for the tourist dollars.
What else can Puerto Rico export? Sugar cane is provided from other countries.

You can spend your entire life(as many have ) trying to overcome just one area and only make the slightest dent.

I am a Canadian. I suffered a stroke in Dec 2017. I received first rate care immediately at VGH. Immediately after being discharged I was transferred to an excellent Rehab centre to learn how to walk again. The therapy was first rate. I will take our " socialist medicine system" over the predatory capitalist medical system in the US. Everyday I was in the hospital I thanked God I live here in Canada and not in the U.S.

Canadian tar sands causes more greenhouse gases than bitcoin does. If Puerto Rican themselves got into bitcoin mining they could actually bring real financial value to the island for themselves. Any person could mine or speculate. Bitcoin is the ultimate democratic currency.
