This song is a classic example of the Dan's use of catchy melodies, beautiful harmonizing and lyrics about twisted and dark subjects, all delivered with a nonjudgmental, even cheery, amoral tone. Brilliance that no other artist captured in the same way.
Used to hear this one on the local FM station all the time and thrill to the subversion. These lyrics are so sophisticated and now, as an adult, impress even more with their coding. Back when turning on the radio was an adventure, and access to the evolving culture of the 'outside world.'
Oh, man, I've been waiting for ya'll to do this song for a minute! Steely Dan are MASTERFUL at pairing pleasant, upbeat tunes to incredibly dark lyrics.
@@timcardona9962do we know for sure Feldman is playing the electric piano solo? I’ve been talking about this with some Uber Dan fans. It kinda sounds like Fagens style and Feldman isn’t credited with keys on the sleeve ) (Although the credits were frequently wrong and we know he played keys on Royal Scam and Aja and was an accomplished keyboard player in addition to percussion)
@@steelyd2 I've seen Feldman listed on some sources. It also sounds more like Feldman than Fagen to me. Yes Fagen plays jazz piano but the technique here sounds a bit too polished for Don and if you listen to Feldman's Black Cow solo you can pick up on some stylistic similarities
@@timcardona9962 I hear you. Feldman is definitely listed on the sleeve but only for percussion and vibes. For keyboards it lists Michael Omartian, David Paich and Donald. Now we know for sure the beautiful acoustic piano parts on the record like dr wu, throw back the little ones etc are definitely Omartian and he has said so in interviews, he also said he played electric piano on some songs like Black Friday (I’m assuming probably Chain Lightning as well). Paich said in an interview that he played electric piano on Black Friday and Dr wu but can’t remember playing on any other songs. we can safely assume based on other known songs that Fagen probably played the organ parts because he liked playing organ and those parts are fairly simple so Daddy don’t live in NYC is probably him and I think there’s organ on Any World, maybe a few others, safe to say he plays synth on Your Gold Teeth 2. If we believe the credits (which again, were not always accurate) and the only 3 keyboard players on the album are Omartian, Paich and Donald then I would say this EP solo certainly sounds the most like Dons style. Some of the Dan nerds I was talking to about this like Anthony Robustelli (who published that book on the band a few years ago and did that awesome tribute album of unreleased Dan songs which you should check out if you haven’t) said he was pretty sure this was Fagen because a lot of the licks remind him of the extended electric piano solo on Your Gold Teeth 1 from Countdown to ecstasy which we know for sure was Donald. I do agree with you however that it sounds like Feldmans style as well so I wouldn’t be totally surprised if it was him either. I guess it’s just one of those things we may never know and realistically there’s probably only 10 people in the whole world who actually care! But when you get obsessed with this band these are the sorts of things that keep you up at night! While we’re at it, who played that slinky sax part on this song? It’s only two notes did they really bring in a specialist to only play that part? The only other sax featured on the record is the incredible solo on Dr Wu which of course was jazz great Phil Woods. I suspect the little sax part on this song was played by Fagen as well. We know he played sax on the previous record with his solo on the Duke Ellington cover East St. Louis toodleoo. I wouldn’t be surprised if they wanted a little sax effect on this song and Fagen just grabbed his sax and did it real quick but again we may never know. Sorry for the long post once I get going I can’t stop and it’s always good chatting with another Dan fan who clearly knows their stuff
Long before there were 20 screen multiplex movie theaters, there was the local movie theater, that had 1 maybe 2 screens. I can vividly remember being at one in downtown Boston that had 2. I was a Steely Dan junkie from the get go with Can't Buy A Thrill, and at the time this song was getting or had gotten airplay. in the theater, management, probably unbeknownst to them what Mr. LaPage was up to lyrically, decided that the chorus .. Everyones gone to the movies, was custom made to perfectly fit on as advertisement to play over house speaker system. I near pissed myself laughing due to the naivety of the situation. 😂
In a pantheon of subversive songs about societal underbelly figures that sound so sweet, this one could be the topper. Everyone's gone to the movies...start the projection machine. The narrator figures as Mr. LaPage's what, enabler, groomer, and you can dance to it. Anyrate, again as a Dan fan since the '70s I am LOVING all these Dan takes and glad you like the band. I've shared with all the Dan fans I know. Thanks.
Some context for younger viewers: Back then if you wanted to watch pr0n you had three options: go to an “adult” movie house and sit with all the other degenerates; go to a “peep show,” which had small private rooms showing a movie on loop for as long as you kept feeding quarters into the machine, or; buy a film and have it sent to your home (in a “plain brown wrapper”). Mr LaPage is the neighborhood creep showing skin flicks to the kids while their parents go to the regular movies. My favorite line is “I know you’re used to 16 or more, sorry we only have 8.” Home movies (and the dirty ones you got mail order) were in the cheaper, smaller 8mm format, as opposed to theatrical releases in 16mm, 32mm or larger.
No kidding! I never contemplated the lyrics before. The musical part is always so good and you’re kind of just key into the hook. That is a very pervy song.
It’s an absolutely brilliant song! And yes, you are correct, it’s pretty much the same rhythm section from Hey Nineteen, but also from Do it Again. In fact, I’ve always had this fantasy of being a DJ and mashing those three songs together, because it would be such an epic mashup of Steely Dan tunes! A lot of double entendres in this song, but it seems to be loosely about underage sex, and/or watching pornography, but because these guys are so clever, it’s always difficult to tell EXACTLY what they mean, but you know it’s something like that! It’s so cool how they go from this dark subject matter, but then when they hit the chorus, it’s almost this happy Calypso sound. The only modern equivalent I can think of is that song Pumped Up Kicks from Foster the People, where they take a very dark subject matter verse, and then couple it with a very happy sounding chorus. 🎸🎼❤️😎
Do it agains rhythm section woulda been Jim Hodder on drums and Walter on bass. Jeff Porcaro plays drums here and probably Chuck Rainey on bass although the credits for Katy Lied are a little wonky
SD's music is sensational. The lyrics are a huge part of that. Becker and Fagen considered themselves a comedy band, to a degree. Humor is an ESSENTIAL ingredient. The juxtaposition of the happy and smooth sounding music to dark/disturbing lyrics makes them one of the most subversive bands ever.
And while there are a very few exceptions, there are several ways to interpret the story the lyrics tell. And Don and Walt don't really like to explain their songs. It's up to the listener.
