Brandon Vazquez scored in the final minutes to deliver a 1-1 draw to the United States against Jamaica in the opening match of Group A of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup group stage on Saturday night at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.
It is the first time in five Gold Cup matches that the U.S. have not suffered a defeat after conceding the opening goal, dating back to a 2013 comeback group stage win against Cuba (4-1).
U.S. MF Alan Sonora had the first crack at goal for either side with a shot in the 8' saved by Andre Blake, but it was Jamaica who would break the deadlock, doing so via a set piece in the 13'.
Demarai Gray swung in a free kick deep into the area where Damion Lowe met it with a header into net and a 1-0 Jamaica lead, snapping a run of 227 minutes without a Gold Cup goal. It was also the first time that the U.S. had trailed in a Gold Cup group stage match since against Panama in 2015.
The momentum stayed with the Reggae Boyz and they looked set to double their lead in the 29' when Kevon Lambert was fouled in the U.S. area.
Leon Bailey stepped up to take the spot kick, but saw his effort saved by U.S. GK Matt Turner, who soared to his left to block the effort. Bailey had another chance on the rebound, but sailed his shot wide.
The best look at goal for the U.S. in the first 45 minutes came in the waning moments when Jordan Morris was played in, only to see Blake make another top save to keep his team ahead.
The U.S. sought to get back on even terms after the restart by bringing on some fresh legs and one of those substitutes, MF Cristian Roldan, nearly equalized in the 71' only to see his shot denied on a reaction save from Blake.
Just when it looked like Blake and the Jamaican defense would hold on, the U.S. found their goal in the 88' when a Jesus Ferreira cross was cleared to the feet of Brandon Vazquez, who promptly deposited the ball into the back of the net for the 1-1 final.

I see a lot of people underestimating Jamaica. They have several players in both the Premier League and the Championship, many of which are under 25. I predict the same thing that happened with Canada will happen with Jamaica and at some point it will be USA, Mexico, Canada, and Jamaica battling for the top spot in Concacaf.

Overrated. He is a crazy player who does not have composure. If you just see his highlights, you can get fooled that he is world class, but he is a chump.

Bailey is an individual player who must be given the responsibility to carry his team on his shoulder for him to his quality. Once his roll is limited he'll just become average. Average is what Villa has turned hi into.
Jamaica building a decent team here. If they can convince more players to play for them and start producing youths like America have been recently, their team would be able to make K/O in WC. The whole of North America has come so far in football. Mexico are sturggling a bit but they always at the World Cup tournaments

Proud of my national team, so many positives already from a freshly formed team, it's only up from here, strong feeling we'll be meeting again in the final being the two best teams, we only have to finish off the game then and claim the gold cup, we were the better team the entire match, minor lapse in focus caused US to comeback but only positives from this match. 🇯🇲

@@EmsiYTs yes, this is the way is being perceived since 1961. However, it needs to change for the better. There are too many flaws that affect the national teams overall including the # of teams competing in wld cups that don't match the EUFA. Most concacaf teams don't succeed because they are secluded to their own backyards, and the cocacaf only spend $$$$ for big soccer events such as champions league and gold cup, which are considered lucrative. Most national teams that only depend on their government's subsidies are not successful. This doesn't include Mexico and the USA who have strong major leagues and economic support. It will be a mess in the future because the nation league competition will also include USA and Mexican teams from their champion premier leagues. They don't talk about it if foreign players will be allowed. I read it few months ago. I am interested in the national teams success, but careless about the concacaf champion league. I forgot. To answer your comment about America. This north and south was invented by the US. When I went to elementary school in the 70's, there was only one continent called America. They were the ones who divided 1/3 in north & south during the civil war. It was politics who divided America in 1/2, not what they claimed to be land mass and new "species" ??? which sound derogatory. Many central and south ameticans have asked why?

Jamaica had the lead for most of the game but they made costly mistakes namely the Leon Bailey penalty miss which would have put them up 2-0 and that costly give away right in the box to Vasquez which allowed him to tie the game...but beyond that Jamaica were okay I guess but could have been better

Happens all the time tbh. A lot of English players never get a call up for England because of so many nailed on starters and a lot of competition so they switch to other countries.

Jamaica should of won based on the missed penalty. i think this team could be the best in the region if they had 2 more quality additions.
Jamaica probably never should have had that penalty to start with and US probably should have had one later in the game so I suppose evened out.
It is a penalty because contact was made, if no contact was made then you would be correct as it should be an indirect free kick inside the box. But contact was made so it is a penalty. The penalty was a horrible one and Leon Bailey missed an open goal so I’d say the end result was just

If the rebound from the penalty came on Bailey's left foot instead of his right, he would have scored it
Honestly Bailey never look confident missing the penalty was bad but that rebound was harder to miss than score 😢 ! missing that goal is gonna hunt him and might affect his performance for the rest of the tournament but it's all in the game so let's be optimistic we played well take in consideration this is the defending champion , plus nation league winner !

Bobby Reid or Antonio should have taken the kick. From the way how i saw Bailey standing & looking all over...his body language seem like he lacks confidence. We should have won easily but its better than a lost. Think Jamaica has a good track record in gold cup with the last 6 of our opening games we didnt lose plus we have new players so they just need time to gel.

The Reggae Boyz really knows how to break the hearts of fans but I blame the coaching staffs for the results last night.
Coach has nothing to do with it. Bailey looks like he lacks confidence, not sure why Bobby Reid, Gray or Antonio didnt take the penalty. It should have been an easy win but we got 2 games left against Trinidad & St.Kitts. We need a good central midfielder(s) so we can transition the ball from defense to forward instead of the long balls. We just need to take our chances even when it seems impossible.
