Thin client DTS 1 x Atom x5 Z8350 / 1.44 GHz RAM 2 GB flash eMMC 8 GB HD Graphics 400 GigE Wyse Thin OS monitor: none BTS with 3 Years Dell Collect and Return Service
My experience with the Wyse 3040 is, unfortunately, too much for my taste. It's a fragile successor to the earlier constructions of Wyse. It handles Teradici emulation in a kludgy and counter-intuitive way. The way it handles USB devices is equally awful. If that was the only thing, then I would go to Dell ProSupport as a fallback, but they are, with only a few excellent exceptions, dreadfully unprepared for their customers. The Wyse 3040s are overpriced for what they are, but once you learn their quirks, the 3040 can offer some power to your VDI environment. However, they require a commitment from your part to understand them, and if you have other projects, it can be enough to get you wanting to install physical desktops.
@@sjWiz I'm not sure about now, but it was when you asked this. And for the purpose these serve, these Dell think clients are wonderful. I occasionally manage close to fifty of these in our hospital environment and generally they are trouble free. Of course, we don't allow USB devices and Dell in general has gone downhill lately. The past two sales reps I have dealt with have been absolutely horrible.. submitting same order twice, leaving accidental damage protection off the order and even after sending us the quote with it on it, and lately with the new rep at my current employer, we can't even get quotes back. My director is about ready to force us (hospital system with four campuses) to go HP, and I have already seen a local school district do it as well.
You can configure dual monitors because these little thin clients have two DisplayPort slots. USB redirection of printing devices, particularly bidirectional USB printers like the HP OfficeJet Pro series, gets to be a headache because of the poor way it's handled by Wyse Device Manager and Wyse Management Suite. You need to identify the USB device at the thin client startup and then add that information manually to the configuration file on the server. Finally, you must add InterfaceRedirect=Yes for that specific USB output device. But what about serial printers or network shares? Yes, you can get the VM to work with the 3040 for this, BUT it's NOT plug and play. You must read the reference guide, and if you don't have ProSupport, you are going to wish you had.
You have zero knowledge about technology!! You pay for the solution, not for the piece of iron and plastic! The value is the money you can save in the future!! Go back to school, chicken!
Actually, you can wipe the ThinOS on the Wyse 3040s and 5060s/5070s and install a trimmed down version of the Windows OS, but remember, that's not a computer. It's a means of connecting to a virtual machine, and if you don't connect to a broker, you have many other ways to configure this little box. The down side is that the learning curve on managing the Wyse box is steep. www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/04/wyse-thinos-maintenance/thinos_8.5_ag/configuring-microsoft-remote-desktop?guid=guid-22285cc5-5bcd-449a-8125-eaf4142595bb&lang=en-us
@@NealKlein Hi, Neal, Dell says on its website the Wyse machines are locked with factory OS, do you know what kind of lock it is? and do you know if it is just this simple to bypass the lock by wiping the disk and install another system? i plan to get one and install Debian or Ubuntu on a 3040 if it is possible, thank you.
Noticed the dual DP ports on the back side. Can these be used as media streaming devices?
How do I get rid of that black pop up bar? It constantly pops up blocking things in trying to do while working...
PRETTY COOL

What's the purpose of this please? Is it a computer?
This is a thin client computer. It is not meant to be used as a standalone computer. It is meant for a virtual desktop environment.
how would one of these compare to an rpi 4?

Is the Wyse 3040 Dell's premier/goto thin client for a while now?
