McParland's challenge deserved him being sent off. Completely unnecessary. Foul play. And he knew it

This is one of the most disgraceful moments in UK football. It was the days when there were no substitutes. Charging the goalie was still allowed (indeed in the 1958 final Nat Lofthouse charged the Utd keeper into the goal and scored) but McPartland simply ran full tilt into Wood who was well away from the goaline. Utd had been playing all the football up till then and even playing with a scratch goalie they managed 2-1. Seems to me taking out Wood was a blatant Villa ploy. McPartland faked injury while Wood was carried off.

Dave Smith - You just blew up your own argument there, you call it "disgraceful" then admit it was allowed.

You could say this was the first act of Anti-United resentment by opposing clubs with McParland’s deliberate collision. Already jealousy against the club had began, denying them their first double.

'Allowed' or not, under the the contemporary rules, it was still a disgraceful incident. McParland would probably now be facing a criminal prosecution, let alone a sending off...

@@who9387Shoulder charging was allowed, not deliberately headbutting the keeper.

McParland would have been sent off these days - and should have been. Disgraceful and unnecessary follow-through in the 'challenge' on Wood, which he surely could have stopped. Appalling.

Yes, even by there standards it was an outrageous foul, only ‘fair’ if it was shoulder to shoulder. Mendy still doing the fake injury routine yesterday!
