looks like walnut, but rosewood works! they also made this 73 pattern a while back, maybe 2017 - I have a single blade 73 scout trapper in cocobolo. bought it back when GEC knives on eBay were much cheaper. Think I paid under $100 for a brand new in tube 3-4 yrs ago. Buying a GEC that is "used" can be a great deal, patina/staining is no big deal for me! If it's over sharpened, then I think twice. Last month, I scored a used #25 Ivory acrylic barlow w/patina stained blade for $140... a new in tube goes for $250+ (actually most are $300+) Take care my friend - Great Knife Wiz!
At release these were priced at around half of the Remington version's tag, and despite 467 being made they weren't a big hit with most GEC fans, and I don't understand why. I bought one of these African Rosewood #73s, use it regularly, and like it for all the same reasons you do. It's not often these days that you can say you have a GEC bargain, but this gets close. Actually I don't find the #23 too big for some settings (particularly the Liner Lock variety), but this is certainly more pocketable. It's high time GEC reissued the #43 Oregon Trapper, which is just a shade larger than the #73. I know what you mean about 'someone else's patina'! I like to remove it prior to developing my own.
Nice size and looks like a real traditional looking knife. I like because it has a clean simple design, having two blade makes it even better too. 🙂👍
Stunning!
Glad you think so lol

Ive actually got my 2 blade 23 in my pocket today. But it's certainly too big for some pants i have with smaller pockets.
