She was my idol as a little girl; I went to all her movies. My most cherished possession was a personally autographed photograph.

Betty is one of my faves from the 40s. Her, Rita Hayworth and Alice Faye, pure gold. I do have an inscribed autograph of Betty that I bought about 5 years ago.
It is a beautiful black and white.

Betty Grable was the Queen of Hollywood musicals from 1940 to 1952 and the top-most female earner in the USA during this period. She went on suspension a few times because she refused dramatic parts at Fox. But, that I think was a humongous mistake. In a dramatic part in the 40's "I wake up screaming" [several excerpts shown in this upload], she was superb as the little sister. She essayed the part even better than Jeanne Craine did in the 50's version of the same film under the title "Vicki" with Jean Peters in the titular role. Despite the huge build-up of Marilyn Monroe in the early 50's, when the reviews for How to marry a millionaire were published, they were all glowing with Betty's name. Movie fans too loved Betty the best. Monroe was okay, but not as riveting as in her portrayal of the dumb-blonde in "Gentlemen prefer blondes", and should have had her part more fleshed out. Lauren BaCall was 2nd best. Sadly, Betty had two duds with her last films How to be very popular and Three for the show. Nevertheless, she will always be the star that was revered throughout the world who gave happiness to million of families with her sweet face, gorgeous legs and singing and dancing up a storm talents.

She refused many serious roles...and she was kept from breaking out of her formula??? Can't be both ways.

She has already been dead now for over 50 years !. If it wasn't for just one movie she made called How To Marry A millionaire 1953.I would never have heard of her !..
