People who aim such nasty comments at you are very insecure in their personal approach. Thank you for all your wisdom and encouragement - the true characteristics of a competent teacher!
I can understand why some people react that way, but like many others who follow your channel you've taught me to be bolder and trust the strength of the tree. To those doubters: "the truth is in the budding".
Excellent. Sensible takes on aspects and caring for our bonsai. You don’t poo-poo anyone else’s opinions, nor their experiences. Learn, try, and “extrapolate “ to get the bonsai you see in your tree. I have always thought that the drainage hole(s) on the bottom were suspect and why not on the lower sides. When I garden and grow things for it, I typically add more drainage holes on the bottom sides for better drainage and water use age by the plant. It has proven itself with better results than I first thought it would. Love your extrapolating and trying to improve our bonsai journeys. Very interested in what your pots will look like.
I have been inthe hobby since college. I started in 1983. I have killed many trees in the process. I live in SW Minnesota and have learned about the climate and the seasons here. I try to learn all I can . I am still learning, and try to keep in that mind set. I have learned what works for me here. Yes I still kill a tree now and then. I am still learning. Thank you for your willingness to share your vast knowledge. I look forward to your podcasts. Thank you again.
I cut back drastically at times it works out. I don’t pay attention to the rules most people that call themselves masters are ass holes. I’ve made my own way and Akadama will never be seen in my plants. Having studied ceramics in Japan and in the US in the East you imitate the master in the US you try to be unique from the start. Both have positive and negative attributes. I’ve learned by watching people and listening. Its worked for me.
I think folks complaining about you "killing trees" Should remember you've been doing bonsai for SO MUCH LONGER than most of them have been alive... If they don't like it they're free to watch other bonsai channels and learn various techniques they like! By that I mean they can take some things from your channel and mix it with things from other channels and eventually learn their own unique technique that works for them. :)
I appreciate your methods and would never think you kill a tree by cutting drastically. Your pot design sounds like a great alternative to traditional bonsai pots in order to help the tree remain moist. Looking forward to seeing your finished design in use. 💚
It never ceases to amaze me how many people who no-one has ever heard of feel obliged to criticise others. "Empty vessels make the most noise." I began dabbling in Bonsai almost 50 years ago. At that time in the West there was a limited number of people doing the art and even more limited access to information. These days people who have 5 ordinary looking trees, or trees they bought in, after two years think themselves experts. When those people offer me their "advice"/opinion I smile and reply, "I'm consumed by my indifference."
I love your videos, I think you are so wise and you inspired me to do it myself! Pls don’t let these comments get to you, you are one of the coolest people on earth ❤
If you think about art, music, construction, technology, or really any human inventions or processes, we build on what others have done before us. Your clip and grow method and the drastic measures you may sometimes take are based on what you've learned from others and what you see in nature. You have found your inspirations and created your own artistic methodology, and that's beautiful. It's nothing to be mocked, but it may not be for everyone and that's fine. I have been thinking a lot this summer about a word you use in some of your videos - brutal. Training a tree sometimes takes some brutal measures. When I walk in the woods nearby I see some beautiful trees that grow unhindered. But then there are some huge old beech trees that have been brutalized with carvings, or illness, or even the weather. One of them was very old and fell near a trail some time ago, yet all of its branches continued to grow despite it being uprooted most of the way. It's a survivor of nature's brutality. Thank you for your videos. I find them very inspiring!
Thank you so much! Love you and your work! You and and one other man made me start a new hobby. I am just in the beginning, I am a dog groomer, very asia-affine in many ways, amd unknowingly startet a bonsai project without being aware of it 8 years ago when I planted a pommegranade seed - these are bushes not trees- , but I wanted a tree and trimmed it to be one. It is now 8 years old, by far not optimal for bonsaing, although it is pretty small in size (only 30 centimeters) and has very tiny leafs. But I cut it not in any awareness... It is a little misshapen and already quite sturdy,,, we will see... It will be a challenge Thank you very much from my heart! Greetz from Germany!
More profound wisdom from Master Chang! Learn from a master, then extrapolate. one day i will be able to extrapolate from dad and all the bonsai he passes on to me!
I do like your"free wheeling" approach to bonsai, perhaps because I'm prone to try unusual things too, as an example, rather than using wire on my tiny trees (shohin size) I introduce bends using old elastic bands, one or more. I don't get the precise shapes but the changing appplication of force gradually works on the branches and I don't get wire marks.
Never thought of myself as free wheeling...tae everything ai do seriously... But in this case, I thnak you for your complement. Thank you Tell a friend about our channel.
I left my trees at a friends house while I was out of town for a week. She didn’t water them enough, and my elm dried up and lost all of its leaves. I was afraid it was dead, but I kept watering it consistently every day, and almost all of the branches sprouted new leaves. I can’t say for every tree, as I am new and only have a few trees, but it seems that they are much hardier than most people think!
You are right...thanks for the encouragement. Elm is one of the few trees that survives doughts in China...so it is very resilient. ...... Thank you for taking time to provide us feedbavk. Tell a friend about our channel.
You’re welcome, and thank you for your reply. I started learning about Bonsai around 2 years ago, and your videos have been very helpful in learning not only the rules, but how to enjoy the process. I’m sorry so many people feel the need to leave negative comments, but the way you responded is respectable. If they would ask politely instead of just insulting you, it would be a much better approach.
Hi. I Love your explications in this. (Sorry for my bad english). I find the way in this great Hobby about your ideas and your Spirit. Thanks for all of this... Lovely and big greetings from Germany
You can talk with any music composer who is successful (according to others), and one of the foremost aspects to their success is that they learned how to 'break the rules' after learning them. As a professional visual artist (painting/photography), along with many others in this field, I also spent a good deal of time 'unlearning' all the 'rules'. It's quite sad to see others stunt their 'creativity' by following the steps of another, or by limiting their 'growth' due to a fear of pushing boundaries. Ah well, the world needs followers. Don't let their comments bother you, people are good at 'acting' as 'perfection' behind the curtain of social media.
Thee are two types of philosopher...Our origin is all good, and our origin is all sin....and some sees things as half full and some half empty. Being positive makes us a happier person and bring us a better life!! Sorry, I can't help with this unsolicited advice. Cheer up man!
Milton, I think your new pot with a hole in the side to allow water to remain pooled in the bottom of the pot may very well work. However I think that a pot with a hole in the side has a few aesthetic drawbacks. I think it might basically make the pot a one sided pot as you would not want to see the "side hole" while displaying your bonsai. I think a better alternative that achieves the same goal would be to either epoxy a donut shape around the hole inside the bottom of a conventional bonsai pot or create the pot from the beginning with the "donut shape" around the hole on the inside of the pot.
These comments come from ignorance not knowledge, so we should just ignore them, they aren’t worth worrying about. We all have lost trees through lack of knowledge and hopefully have learnt from it.
F those haters their made because they don’t have a life worry about yourselves assholes keep up the great work Bossman if it wasn’t for you I’d be wiring like a dumbass waiting forever I’m sorry for the cuss words ppl just need to worry about themselves
We may not all agree with his methodology but it’s very disappointing seeing cruel criticism on Milton on other platforms. And These people are known in California who’s been doing bonsai for many years. Look- if you don’t agree with his methods- don’t watch it! Plain and simple. No wonder why so many people don’t like joining local clubs because their’s so many snobs, know it all, arrogance and gross politics. These people are forgetting the real essence of doing bonsai. Sad!
Clip and grow works great for deciduous trees, it’s not good for conifers. Theres a reason most of the branches are dead on your conifers. Learn to wire, stop destroying ancient trees.
it’s okay man… just let them learn from him… time will tell and they will learn it the hard way after many of their junipers die… I am removing his videos from my RUclips history so I don’t see his videos anymore… We need to stop giving him views… I’d rather spending time on my bonsai and learning from someone that knows what they are doing. (I’m pretty sure he will delete this comment too lol)
