    I think 4k isn't as important as people believe. Especially on social media platforms. After compression the resolution difference between 720, 1080, and 4k are very marginal. Matti Haapoja made a great video on this. Unless you are filming for large screens, although there is software now that upscales 1080 to "4K" both in post and on some TV's integrated software. I like to shoot in 1080 simply because of the smaller file sizes. Great video though.

    • @--.--
      @--.-- Год назад +10

      Especially 4K with insane rolling shutter is just useless. I had an A6400 and was upset about the handheld footage. But the A6400 is very cool in terms of software and price. Much cheaper than a full frame and has excellent autofocus.

    • @Zacharytm
      @Zacharytm Год назад +25

      I appreciate that! The only problem is that I’ve found not all 1080 is created equal. Some 1080 is passable while others isn’t super great. It’s an interesting topic for sure

      Upscaling 1080 to 4K doesn't look as good as using 4K footage on a 1080 timeline. You have the ability to zoom in up to 200% before you start to see any artifacting, why you purposely limit yourself

      4k gives you the ability to zoom and change frame multiple times in a video without loosing quality like peter maceny and other creators do even slightly to retein attention of audience its small but it been proven to work specially for youngster with shor tatention

    Completely my opinion. But… (this might help you if you’re starting out… for me it would have. I would recommend reading even though it’s long)
    Before I start, I need to stress that if you are thinking of going into more professional work or thinking of buying a full frame camera in the future, make sure you buy Full Frame Lenses first. (Even if you have an APSC camera!) Making the mistake of buying APSC lenses when you want to expand in the future can be costly, time consuming, and just annoying. If you are SURE you will not buy a full frame camera in the future, sure: save money and buy APSC lenses.
    I’d say if you’re starting out and deciding between these two, think about what you’re shooting…
    If you’re doing more past paced shots like sports, wildlife, or anything from a distance, try the A6400. The cropped sensor is going to let you get more reach when you’re further away and the 11fps is going to make it a much much easier time getting the perfect shot as a beginner.
    However; if you’re doing street photography, weddings, portraits, or anything more slowly paced where you have time to set the shot up how you would like it to be, the a7ii might be a better choice. Full frame will let you get more in your image if you’re tight with room.
    If you’re still reading I do hope this somewhat helped. Other people obviously may have different insights and opinions but these are from my personal experiences.

I use it just for photography, I have a stand alone camcorder for 4k footage. I only have one other lens other than the Kit lens it came with, which still does better than a standard point and shoot, though I have since gotten a FE 1.8 / 20G lens.

    I bought a A7II as a birthday gift to myself. Absolutely love it! It's nearly the perfect camera for my needs. Hardly shoot video. Mostly pictures. Just need to buy nice lenses for it and I'll be really set! It was the cheapest full frame I could afford at the time. I wanted a full frame to adapt some of my vintage lenses from my old Minolta cameras to it. And I bought a super nice adaptor for it and it works amazing with the peaking! I didn't want a crop sensor for this feature alone. And the camera play memories apps, as cheeky as they are, are great features to have! Makes certain things easier to do in camera such as double exposure and time lapse. Overall, this camera will last me a very long time until I improve my skills and feel I deserve a camera upgrade.

    I came here because I would like to upgrade from my a6000. I still love it, and its enough for what I use it for, we just need two cameras in our household from now on ;). I have some glass for it and batteries so my upgrade path should be the 6400. But I wanted some confirmation. I need to tell you.. The pixel count is the same... :D On Sony-s site they lists 24.2 Mpx for the a6400 and 24.3 for the a7ii. That sould not make that much of a difference. The A7Rii is the highres one. The a 6400 is a shrink down a7ii with a smaller sensor and battery. Maybe i'm at fault here, but it looks like a better deal from every angle. Photo and videography too. (Also you can use full frame lenses no prob with an aps-c sensor but not the other way without cropping in, so the aps-c is easyer too, because you can use alllll of the e-mount lenses not just the full frame ones, witch are more expensive. I just needed to write it down.. A6400 it is! Thanks!

    @zach McGee, why do you say that the A7II has a bigger pixel count if it also has 24MP like the A6400?
    Crop sensors cameras can be easily used in tight spaces if you just choose wide angle lenses!
    I'm a professional photographer since 2016 using only crop sensor cameras (A6000/6300/6400) with ultra wide angle lenses (Sony 10-18 and Tamron 10-24) for interior design and real estate clients, not even once has one of them commented about the gear I use, only the quality of the pictures I deliver!
    I understand that shallow depth of field is very pleasing with full frame cameras but in real life it can be a bit of a problem if you're only starting with photography (the need to use larger F/ stops to have more of the image in focus and having to push the ISO up or zoom out and losing the framing you'd like to use).
    Keep up the good work!

    • @angelwalker.
      @angelwalker. 8 месяцев назад

      Thats when lenses come into place buddy, sounds to me like you have alot to learn.
      Youre talking about distortion, well since the full frame is going to get more space, a 28mm lense in a full frame is equivalent to idk a 35mm or plus on the crop sensor. But really sounds like you need a lot to learn, yes the crop sensors are good but in reality a real proffesional top dog will be shooting in full frame. Crop sensor is really more of a budget thing, specialy years ago when these full frame sonys were over 2 grand. I had to settle for the crop sensors which were way more affordable. There is a reason why a camera from 9 years ago is still on sale today and still competitive aganist something with wayyyyy more feautures yes. And in the end, a full frame sensor is going to capture more true pixels, you get more light to the sensor. I can go on. But the fact that you believe a crop is the same thing as a full frame tells me you got alot more to learn. Full frame will always be better than a crop sensor. Only reason why these two would be comparable is because its a 9 year old vs a 4 year old camera. A camera realeased 1 year after the a7 ii for example a7rii , shits all over the a6400 no questions asked.

    You're right. Good video. You forgot to mention the A6400 425 focus points compared with the A7II 117 focus points. A6400 focuses so much faster and has eye-focus tracking where as the a7II is fixed. So I was all set to buy the A6400. Until I started to chose lenses to go with it. I liked the Sigma 28 - 70mm F2.8 which was a full frame lens. The nearest APS-C lens was the Carl Zeiss that was only F4. A very good lens but not (surprisingly) as good a the Sigma. I could have fitted the Sigma to the A6400 but lost some of the F stops and the wider angles. Plus there's no IBIS on the A6400 and the Sigma had no ISS. With the photos I take I would find IBIS useful. The video quality is irrelevant to me. I don't use my camera for video. I would say that the 6400 is the better camera for video but the A7II is the camera suited for me.

    • @Pwasercan
      @Pwasercan Год назад +3

      I believe you don't lose F-stops when you put a full frame lens on an APS-c sensor. You only lose some FoV, since the light spills over outside the area of the sensor. In summary. you can apply the crop factor, but you should not apply the aperture factor, that's only for native APS-C lenses to get a "full-frame" equivalent, but if the lens is already full frame, you don't have to do it!

      I don't know why so many people believe you can't use full frame lenses with APS-C bodies. You can use them just fine and they work great. You just need to multiply the focal length and the f-stop by the crop factor of your camera (in this case 1.5). And you do that to aps-c lenses too, a 24mm lens for aps-c cameras is still a 36mm actually, it just doesn't project the bigger image area of a full frame on the sensor. So yeah, you could actually say aps-c bodies have even more lens options that full frames because they have the full frame lenses and crop lenses combined haha. I have 5 lenses and all of them are full frame ones and I have an aps-c camera

    • @Pwasercan

    That is sad, buying first new camera is very confusing, when I dig into it, I say hey I have new smartphone already, why keeping my mind busy compering this with that. you always feel that when buying one camera, you will lose something or feature. There is no complete camera with reasonable price . It is gonna cost you arm and a leg for getting full satisfaction .

    . I shoot with a phone and mine is 4K down to 1080P, not bad at all. Infact , people who watch my videos say it looks good, yes it's not UHD, but come on, it's not like 1080P is a, terable resolution. Except for some phones and $100 cameras from unknown brands, 1080P there looks 720P lol

  • @Matthew-zy3yb
    @Matthew-zy3yb 4 месяца назад

    Having a Full Frame camera DOES NOT mean having more resolution 😐. It's quite the opposite actually. Imagine you're looking at a 50" TV playing a 4k video and then looking at a 100" TV playing the same 4k video. On which one will you have a smoother, cleaner image? Of course on the 32", because the pixels will be much smaller and knitted together.
    What you DO have with a Full Frame camera is a sensor capable of obtaining more information in the whole spectrum of light, so you'll have a Higher Dynamic Range (HDR) , and that's because the photodiodes on a Full Frame sensor will be much bigger than the ones on an APS-C. Don't spread wrong info please 😊

      @@MOTMSLT I don’t, the image quality is still great, the auto focus is a bit slower though by today’s standard, but it doesn’t bother me that much. As long as you don’t shoot 4k video, I think you will be fine, lens is way more important than body, so if you can find a good deal, go for it.

    Can somebody please point me in the right direction, i've been 6 years out of the game. I'm thinking of getting a sony a7ii BUT, it's damn near 10 year old piece of hardware.
    I'm looking for cinematography capabilities but also stills. I'm not talking 4k @250 fps or something. Just something that performs well on both worlds. Preferebly within a budget of 1000 euros.

      @@robholguin9091 I know it has many benefits, only one thing and that it’s APS-C tho, I prefer the full frame but I’m so stuck on its build year… I can score an A7ii for 900 but that thing is also from 2014..

    • @byardedwards3570
      @byardedwards3570 6 месяцев назад

      Its all about the lens selection for still photography. If limited selection and quality is adequate then the A6400. If nearly unlimited lens selection of superb quality are preferred then the A7ii. I buy used Minolta lenses for a fraction the cost of new Sony lenses (Sony bought Minolta and imported their products to start their digital camera division).
      If you need a camera for vlogging/ video cam then the A6400 does a far better job with up to 13 continuous hours of filming vs 30 min in the A7ii with other bells and whistles for video.. When the used A6400 / lens cost drops further I will likely pick one up for dedicated video recording.
      When possible shoot in RAW format as that is the only format that allows unlimited image processing.
      Davinci Resolve free version should be tried for video processing.
      If a new video processor is needed, a mac pro late model 2013 with 3 gz , 8 core, 64 bit processor, 3 gb D500 video card x 2, and 1 tb HD can be picked up refurbished for +/_ $400. This will allow Davinci Resolve to process 1080p and 4K up to 60 fps but 4K processing is 4 x slower. Using D700 video cards with 8 gb of memory will be faster but also generate more heat. If you are pro this set up will be inadequate. If not pro this set up will get you going. This mac pro has an intel chip therefore can be formatted to either mac OS or Windows 10.. You may also partition the drive to run the mac or windows. Windows 11 and beyond are not possible due to lack of a security chip in the processor
      OCW.com can provide an update kit to expand the T2 to T3 utility ( look for T2 update kit).

    Compairing FF to APSC is like compairison of MP3 to FLAC in music formats - not everyone need it, many didnt even hear the diference but if you do you will be blown away by all those small details and nuances.
    For video A6400 is better hands down, but that menu is seriously barely usable, unintuitive and just bad. Everytime Ive tried to film with A6400 I just ended up with my phone pus gimbal to do the job better, faster and more enjoyable than Sony.
