Hi Liz, I truly enjoy these vlogs. They are inspirational and so fun. I enjoy seeing the bible verses...it appears as though that is a daily practice and reflection on the book for you. That is inspiring as well as your drawings. Merci.
This is fantastic, Liz. Nice to see a bit of Australia and follow you as you fit sketching into your busy schedule. I continue to be amazed at how you integrate your pen and your brush, going back and forth while doing a sketch.
I really enjoyed watching this! It was relaxing and inspiring. I just started plein air painting and sketching within the last year and it's been the most enjoyable experience. I definitely get the shyness in crowded areas, but trying to get over that!
Thank you, Liz! It is SO beautiful and inspirational to see you "at work", how and when you manage to sketch, your comments and thoughts. And, not least, it is so nice to get to see a little bit of the places where you live! That's what I love about sketching: seeing parts of our wonderful world through the eyes of sketchers from all over the planet. Thank you again, for being so generous in sharing your journey on this Earth through your wonderful sketches and your unique ability to communicate! :-)
Thank you so much for this beautiful Vlog. We used to live in Sydney for over 15 years and now retired in Tasmania. With my health and age, the weather is much too cold for me to sketch outdoors. I used to sketch in the street in Hong Kong in 1970s and love this. I now pick up sketchbook again so it is so wonderful to find you. Love to see your weekly sketches and the video of Sydney, it is very nostalgic.🙏🏼👍🏼❤️📓✍️
Thanks Liz, this one has really helped me to get it into my head to take advantage of those little moments that would otherwise go by and be lost to me forever. Appreciate your insight and inspiration!
Thanks for the Vlog, Liz. Always great to share your experiences. Yes, a lot of the time I'm put off sketching by worrying about what people will say about my work but the more I do the more I improve and this helps me dare to set down my stool in the outside. I've been following you and taking your courses for nearly a year now and once again the cold weather is upon us in Europe, which is another constraint to outdoor sketching making me realise I need to get out more in the rare sunny episodes we may now have until Spring comes around. Very envious of the Australian climate!
thanks Skass Kass - yes the winters must be tough. We really have no idea what it would be like. And yes, we do spend too much time worrying about what other people think! Hope you can find a nice cafe or two with good views this winter!
Loved all the little bits and pieces you shared! After watching the vlog I was so inspired that I immediately had to sketch the mushrooms I was going to cut. Hope I won't be late with lunch because of that. ;-)
What a fun ride! I am starting a sketch journal for the first time and I truly appreciate you sharing your own experience in making art possible and immediate. Thank you!
This video is very helpful to me, seeing how you fit sketching into your day, and how you observe and evaluate how you can improve, such as realizing when you yielded to the phone addiction which we all have!
Very inspirational! I do get nervous sketching outdoors, but joined an outdoor painting/sketching group and I've found it so much easier, and felt less self conscious within a group! I'm also trying to pluck up the courage to vlog too! Excited for your channel!
Thank you Liz for taking the time and effort to vlog. I'm learning alongside so many others who've not had the blessing to attend a workshop or an urban sketchers group. Mahalo!
Sketching on location can be nerve wracking but overall I find people are more amazed than anything. They just want to look at my drawings and watch me draw. It boosts your confidence. I understand the feeling strange thing when doing selfies. Worried that people will think I’m insane. Lol Loving your sketches btw. Beautiful work. Loved you huge 11 x 14 sketchbook and love the idea of adding extra notes in blue. I loved how you said that the conversation gets encoded into the sketch. It’s so true!
Liz, your "sketches" are wonderful. I love seeing the addition of Bible verses. How do you choose the verses for a particular page? Your joy spills all over those of us who get your artistic testimony. Please keep them coming!
Beautiful sketches! I love how loosely you sketch and that is something I need to learn! 😉 oh I adore your handwriting!! so good 😍😍 thanks for sharing, God bless
Very helpful and useful. I am not particularly comfortable sketching outdoors although I force myself to do so. Love the Bible verses - your handwriting make them look so inspirational
I was interested to see you use the dagger brush, which I think is one from Rosemary and Co, and seems to be relatively stiff. I have one made by Princeton and I find it to be far too floppy, rather like a mop.
Hi Tony - I LOVE the Rosemary series 772 half inch. More about daggers here www.lizsteel.com/swords-and-daggers/ If the hair length is too long I find them too floppy too, but this brush is perfect for me!
I ADORE your vlogs!! I really love seeing the architecture and the urban landscape - everything so different from where I am, it makes me travel (I'm in montreal, canada). Seeing you draw also is very interesting and inspiring, i love how you mix drawing and painting sometimes like when you did the dome you put paint first! And love hearing about your thoughts on sketching and throughout the day!! looking forward to the next vlog!
I loved this video! Very inspiring. I admire your work ethic and the way you challenge yourself. My main take away from this video is to carry my sketch bag with me and to take advantage of the little bits of spare time I have to do a quick sketch. The answers to your questions you asked at the front of the video are "Yes" and "Yes". I have a question...how many cups of tea do you drink in one day and do you have a cut-off time when you stop drinking tea? I've been wanting to cut back on my coffee intake and substitute tea. Hope that is not too personal. The coffee habit is from pulling too many all nighters in the design studio to meet a deadline. Thanks for sharing.
i loved this early vlog Liz. Your sketches are so generous and well done-remarkable every time I see one! I see you write on each page a quote from the Bible, and I am curious about this lovely touch? Would you write about it plse if it's not too personal a question?
I am really loving your vlogs! I am very self-conscious about sketching in public (so scared!) -- mostly because I am very new to it. I've been tempted to join in with the Urban Sketchers in Tacoma, WA but feel so intimidated! Anyway, thanks again for the vlogs. It is so encouraging to see your imperfect, lovely sketches. :)
Wow! A watercolour and sketch vlog. Extremely cool Liz. I enjoyed this a lot. I need to get back to sketching more stuff. My notebooks are all writing now. What happened to the love of art, doodling, and sketches. Impressive for such an early vlog, keep up the good work!
Uhh I loved this Liz! So happy to hear that you're planning on doing more vlogs! It is just fascinating to see what an independent artists day looks like! :D Keep them coming! Oh and to answer your question: Yeah I'm terrified of sketching in public! I always expect people to think of me as some weirdo and to judge my non-existing skills.. xD And I too hate to take selfies in public or any pictures to be honest ;) It's great that you're facing your fears and that you get out of your comfort zone! Keep going! A friend of mine once said to me: Life begins where your comfort zone ends. I'm trying to implement this into my life a little more :)
thanks for the comment! The fear of the selfie (being too close to a camera) is similiar to sketching in public. Worrying about what other people think. It never gets easier unless we just start!
great vlog Liz, I have a problem sketching in public but I am getting better at it, the funny looks I got one day standing a tree.... but I was able to get pasted it. My question is how do you sketch when you are with your friends, are they artists or do they do art journalling too so they understand or do they just chat while you sketch. I would like to do that too but my confidence is a problem but not only that I don't know how they would react to me sketching too. How about a vlog on you sketching with friends :)
Thanks so much for this, Liz! I love the encouragement these vlogs give me. I am slowly working my way through your Foundations course and loving it. Would you consider doing a vlog about these daily Bible verses that I see on your pages? Or is there a blog post that talks about them?
thanks Gary and so glad you are enjoying Foundations. Hmm, good question, I don't think I have ever done anything specifically about my Bible verses. They are what I read each morning. I wrote about the compostional layout here www.lizsteel.com/trip-prep-sketchbook-strategies/
Hi Liz loved speeding the week with you on the blog. Enjoyed your sketching on the run. Your daily bible quotes and the way you dated your page. Which sketch book do you use?
Hi Liz! I'm loving these vlogs, and seeing your daily sketchbooks is amazing! I don't mind sketching in public so much - but then, I'm already used to doing other things in public (knitting, practicing the ukulele) that people might consider slightly odd. Would you mind sharing what that blue bag is you're using? It shows up at around 08.30.Always on the lookout for a good bag... ;-)
Liz, I see that you use the lamy joy pen for your sketching are you also useing the nibs made for that pen? I just ordered the lamy joy set and I'm hoping the nibs for that are suitable for urban sketching I look forward to a reply about this burning question lol. if anyone else can respond to these questions please do! I can really use your help have a great weekend!
Awesome! I also enjoy seeing your bible verses. Your skill at capturing a subject is phenomenal! Do you prepare your pages ahead of time with the verses then paint on them later? Or do you sketch then write the words around the picture? Also how do you choose your verses?
Thanks Paige, I write the verses during my morning reading time each day and then design the pages as I go during the day. At the end of the day I add text and the stamped heading.

Oh thanks Larry!! I really love the flow of alternating...it took a while to achieve it (paint first is the way to go) but now it is instinctive
I really enjoyed watching this! It was relaxing and inspiring. I just started plein air painting and sketching within the last year and it's been the most enjoyable experience. I definitely get the shyness in crowded areas, but trying to get over that!
