- On December 2, 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of the French, becoming Napoleon I.
Years after his downfall, on December 2, 1852, his nephew Louis Napoleon reinstated the Empire, styling himself as Napoleon III.
So … the 1st, followed by the 3rd … you may have noticed something is missing here.
The great Corsican general had a son who theoretically ruled as emperor for a handful of days. This young man later led most of his short life trapped in a gilded cage by his father’s enemies. This tragic figure was feared by European rulers, and yet is largely overlooked by history.
This is the story of the boy who would be known as the King of Rome, the Duke of Reichstadt, and “Franz”, but who would be buried as Napoleon II.

@@JH-wi2xr I didn't know he'd produced a son who survived childhood, smartass. Of course he'd *want* to, but he wasn't in charge for all that long and sometimes things don't work out, especially in pre-modern times.

@@JH-wi2xr dunno man, your comment being "of course he did, lol" seemed like an insult to me. I'm not surprised that he would want to establish a hereditary "definitely not monarchy", I was surprised that he actually had a son and I'd never heard of him. Given that Napoleon III was a nephew, I kinda assumed he'd not produced heirs. But his short life kinda explains that.
Napoleon also had at least 2-3 illegitimate sons. One ,Alexandre Colonna Walewski, actually became a accomplished military commander and served his cousin Napoleon iii during his reign as emperor.
Ironic that Napoleon divorced Josephine to sire heirs that could later rule France and have descendants, yet legally adopted her children Hortense and Eugene.
Hortense would marry his brother Louis, becoming mother to Napoleon III. She would also have descendants through an illegitimate son named Charles, who she had with Charles comte de Flahaut, one of Napoleon's generals and likely illegitimate son of Talleyrand.
Eugene was an accomplished general, serving well in the Grande Armee and as Viceroy of Italy, without much direct control from Napoleon. He would marry Princess Augusta, eldest daughter of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria. They would have 7 children, their eldest daughter Josephine would go on to marry Oscar I of Sweden, son of Napoleon's former Marshal Jean Bernadotte and former fiance Désirée Clary.
In conclusion Josephine is now a direct ancestor of many modern European monarchies, and Napoleon is not!

Napoleon’s quote about him being the Alexander to his Philip was certainly something. He definitely had the spirit for it but alas much like Alexander he was fated to die young.
The world would have been very different had Napoleon II or Alexander III lived even an extra 20 years

I know it’s probably a risky thing to say in this community but Simon always felt disingenuous to me, the fact he could plug sponsor products so shamelessly and endorse stuff that were so clearly rip-of&s so enthusiastically left me feeling that I couldn’t get a read on his stance or real thoughts on anything, it just felt… plasitcky almost, like it was all just too manufactured, if the actual content wasn’t interesting I’m not sure I’d have stuck watching the videos.

@deadlockraven1849 I watch all his channels and still get notifications for this one. I'd have to say that the main reason lots of people like his channels is because he is a good host. Nothing against this man but I thought Simon would be back eventually or something.

So many interesting topics being ruined on both this and the geographic channel, idk if it’s poor scripts or this guy just being a bad presenter but probably a mix of both. Extremely disappointed as this used to be some of the best content on RUclips
Simple solution: don't like the content then don't watch it. Stop whining because no one wants to hear it. Some of us actually enjoy the content. Whether its Simon or karl presenting it.
