  • Welcome back in my rabbit hole and with inky fingers!
This video is the 2nd out of a Mini-Series about Vitruv and how he has influenced my taste. I'm an architect and since I learned about his basic concept I often use his theory to criticize and to create good architecture. But what he wrote about architecture you sure also can say about products.
    There 4 episodes will be:
    1. The most beautiful pens I own
    • My TOP 5 fountain pens...
    2. The most solid/durable pens I own (this video)
    3. The most useful pens I own
    4. In which of my pens the three main categories are equally and equally well considered.

By mistake- a mistake that I am embarrassed to admit I have repeated several times- I have discovered how durable my EDC Sailor Pro Gear Mini is. I have sent it through the washer and the dryer, dropped it, and generally given it hard use. It lives in my front pocket, or in my jeans pocket and I have had zero issues with the clip, leaking or anything. Thank you for the great series- I am looking forward to the third installment!

I agree, my Lamy 2000s and my Pilot VP are among my most durable pens. I also have a Kaweco Supra in solid brass that is highly robust, although the feed is not as reliable. I've used a Montblanc 146 since 1992, so strictly speaking, besides some vintage pens I inherited, that is my most long-lived fountain pen. BTW, the Lamy 2000 grip section is brushed stainless.

Very practical selections and like the black theme here also noticed a German theme as well. I would have to agree somewhat on your choices. my 5 in the field are ...
    (5) Jinhao 80 black with black clip and a black lamy safari nib.
    (4) Moonman F4 rouge et noir in coral red with a spider lazered on a nib
    (3) Twsbi 580 diamond in Prussian blue with a nib
    (2) Jinhao 159 black/ chrome trim with a Peter Ford custom grind italic nib.
    (1) Jinhao 9019 cotton candy lobster blue demonstrator with a < M> heartbeat nib.
    Honorable mention...
Jinhao 996 tan tiger stripe with a lazered cat face nib which I customized in honor of our cat Niko who passed on. I hold this particular one close to me and never lend it out.

I was surprised to hear you mention the Pilot VP as a durable pen, because the clip is said to break off quite easily because it's just glued on. I stopped wearing it in my shirt pocket for that reason..
My 5 most durable fountain pens are:
    5. Tools to Liveby "Le Chat"
    4. Pilot Metropolitan / Urban
    3. Parker steel fountain pens (Sonnet, vector and jotter)
    2. Graf von Faber Castell rhodinated Guilloche
    1. Kaweco AL Bronze
I didn't list my Lamy Studio LX all black because you covered it in your video. It'd be in my top 3. Mine also had its lacquer removed where the clip touches the body but that's not unusual at all.
The Lamy 2000 however, as durable it is and as many falls and hardships it went through, didn't make it on my list simply because of its material, Makrolon - I've seen many cracked Lamy 2000s on eBay, unfortunately. I still don't baby it like I baby my really expensive fountain pens.

Excellent, I love a pen that makes a satisfying click sound when the cap is posted. My most durable pen is probably a Kaweco sport in stainless steel. It's very heavy but is also incredibly strong and feels as though it could survive anything.

      @ste286ste 18 дней назад +2

@DarkFire515 If you like a satisfying click, then the Diplomat Aero is pen you need to have if you don't already have one. it is the feel as well as the noise it makes as it clicks, it's almost a fidget gadget as it is soooo satisfyingly good, and they write so beautifully too,. The nibs are in house tuned Jowo nibs so you are as near as guaranteed a good one.

Another excellent video. I totally got what you were referring to for solidity and durability. Loving your content keep up the great work. BTW Matt Black Capless is awesome but it does tend to scratch or scuff if not kept in a case. For me Lamy Safari and Pelikan Twist are very durable.

I admire and notice durability, even though I don't consider it when choosing a pen to use. Here are my top 5, all of which are pretty dang bulletproof.
    5. Muji
    4. TiLiner Titanium
    3. Good Blue L130
    2. Kaweco Liliput Brass
    1. Kaweco Stainless Steel Sport.

    Very nice durable collection!
I recently bought the LAMY Studio LX All Black like yours and added a gold F nib which is very nice. I’d be curious if you ever take the Gold nib off your All Star and put it on the Studio and then compare it to your LAMY 2000. I wonder which pen would come out on top! I do have the brass sport and while it is totally durable it is a little hefty for longer sessions. I think the black piston sport could be a good choice.
Great review - thanks for sharing!

Durability is definitely a consideration for me as most of my writing is done out of the home, both at work (in a gym filling out client programs) or at an archery range

In terms of durable pens, my most durable one is the Kaweco Brass Sport that I carry with my every day. (Wie sagt man EDC auf Deutsch?) It has a the stock Broad steel nib and writes reliably from using the Kaweco Pearl Black cartridges. I feel like I could drive over it and it would still be unharmed. Next would be the Kaweco Original 250 with a steel M nib. Similar metal body, similar reliability, but the full size converter lets me access bottled inks. The final pens are ones that are no longer in production. Birmingham Pen Company here in the US made several runs of stainless steel pens they named the Ironsides and machined in their own shop. I have three, one of which is anodized in black, the Raven Ironsides. They have steel (I think) Bock nibs. Since they're made of stainless steel, they are predictably heavy, but I feel these will long outlast me. (Honorable mention would go to Karas Pen Company and their INK V2 aluminum body pens. They're reasonably priced and worth checking out.)

I've always wanted a Kaweco Brass or bronze Sport, but my hands are way too big for them. I ended up getting a Kaweco Supra instead in brass and got the clip and a converter for it. It comes with a bigger #6 steel nib and I got that in a medium. It's a very very durable pen and I feel safe taking it anywhere and throwing it around. It fits my bigger hands very well, and you can also take a section out of the pen to make it shorter and a pocket pen if need be. I usually keep Robert Oster Gold Antiqua ink in it or Private Reserve D.C. Supershow Blue.

@@Blue_Rosemarieis this true for all the TWSBIs? I only heard the Eco being notorious for cracking. This is why I am sticking with the Diamond 580. So far it even survived in the bottom of my rucksack. Well, it was surrounded by one layer of jeans fabric (a pen sleeve).

Well… I guess I had an experience with it but it wasn‘t my pen. I was loaned a twosbi diamond 580 alr and was always wondering why my fingers get inky all the time. There was a slight crack where you can screw out the grip section. I only saw it when I cleaned the pen and ink was hanging in the crack. But I still thing twsbis are very good pens. I myself own an eco and a diamond 580 and am very happy with them.

Great video. I immediately thought about the LAMY Safari for this category, and so your #1 pick makes sense - is the aluminum of the Al-star more or less durable/solid than the plastic of the Safari? Not sure, but it definitely fits. I hadn't thought of the Faber-Castell Ambition as a pen for teens.. it's a $100 pen after all. I think my Faber-Castell Grip would be my pick just because it has a lot of those elements but is plastic and closer to $30.
