- Vietnam Veteran Rick Hazen of Medford, Oregon shares stories from his time serving in the Army: from his first engagement with the enemy to his witnessing of a mistaken napalm drop on fellow soldiers. To hear his entire story go to www.sopbs.org/...
In my U.S History class we had a substitute teacher who was a "river rat" in the Vietnam War. He told how people wouldn't give them the time of day, calling them "murderers and scum." I remember we thanking him for his service one by one as we left the class that day. You could see the joy in his eyes that people actually respected/understood what he went through.
Keep that lesson in mind as I feel we're upon a new wave of disliked vetrans
Innocent poor Vietnamese men, women and children killed and they recruited 18 yr old farmers to fight with barely any supplies or training.
I'm a cop today and I yearn for a time I'm no longer called these lies
@The Wraith "murderers and scum" but there are plenty of others
@The Wraith Seek the love of Jesus, my friend. He is coming back so let go of your hostility, focus instead on forgiveness and making your heart right. Jesus Christ is all that should matter because He is in control. Trust him!
as a Vietnamese. thanks for your service and genuine effort of defending us from the Communists. all south Vietnam thank you. it was the crooked politicians which lost the war, not these brave men.
well ur a dumbass the socialists/commies cared about there land and there ppl they didnt want no shit imperialist country to take them over and pay there workers 9 fucking cents a hour.
Dhillon cig reviews77 lol by the way you spell i can tell how intelligent of a guy you are. and no, as a matter of fact, Saigon was the richest city in Southeast Asia at that point. and South Korea/North Korea situation resemble the old Vietnam, I'm guessing those "imperialized" South Koreans don't get paided 9 cents an hour.
But what about when the Americans harmed citizens in Vietnam? The Americans also did bad things over there, and I could prove that to you.
+History Man the Vietnamese did way worse things to their own people dumbass. Just because a handful of American soldiers killed and raped a few civilians doesn't justify the terrible actions of the Vietcong.
+Jason Lee umm agent orange???
My Great Grandpa Died Last Year He Served In World War Two And Vietnam, Rest In Peace Grandpa.
What did he do during the Korean war?
Liar
Ye hate to say it as well but he’s lying
Both wars are like ten years apart it’s totally possible especially if he was a youngster
I hope that you arent lieing because my grandfather fought in vietnam and the korean, if u arent im sorry for ur loss as i also lost my grandfather in january this year.
My father cooked food for your group and many others. He passed away two weeks ago. I hope you're well brother.
I’m sorry 😢
Your father is in a much much better place. May he rest in peace.
Old men declare war... and make the youth fight
Hey, young men fight better than old men. Its just a matter of who can fight better..
Ok I see your Point but what does age has do to with it? There is a reason they don't let 70 year old men into the Marine Corps. Simple they're not fit to fight i Think the required age was like 18-35 or 40 during nam. And actually many if not the majority of US Presidents is veterans the most obvious example being Eisenhower who was the fucken commander in chief of the allies in europe during ww2.
Eduardo Rarani it’s a quote, means it’s these politicians who wanna fight yet they make young people fight in the wars
uR Wack old men tend have more knowledge fool
Imagine greedy politicians fight their own wars. Now that would be a sight.
“He ,DANCED”
I visualize this in my head ,and i can only imagine what the surviving veterans go through.
It’s even hard for modern combat vets to imagine what it’s like to see someone being shredded that close. Most of our combat now is done at distances so great you only catch glimpses of the enemy.
im assuming that he was hit by so many rounds the bullets hitting him made it appear as if he was dancing.
Why do you keep cutting, let the man talk.
Nathan B to get you to go to their website
Peace to you Rick. May the Lord wipe your brow and kiss that bad memory away. And I know you did it for us. Retired Army myself, and I did a lot of things, I never knew I would or could, but it is good to be out and alive. God Bless you.
God Oh okay God, I believe you. I agree with you that there is no God , God.
Thank you
@God God arguing of His non-existence.... This is golden.
In a foxhole, you pray to anybody, usually your buddy next to you.
God There’s plenty of evidence for God’s existence! For one, over 500 people saw Christ after his death at the same time, Dead Sea Scrolls, House of David inscription, multiple Roman documents confirming not only the existence of Christ, but about how the things said in gospels about his actions are accurate, and the simple fact the life cannot exist without a God, whether you use the Big Bang theory version with the first sub atom or finite energy, neither of which could not occur without a creator to set things in motion. Plus, the evils in this world aren’t his fault, they’re ours. It’s not his fault that people kill each other for no reason, and send their sons to die in wars, we mold this world, we’re responsible for it.
Straight og. I would buy this man a drink.
Jaime Zana. OG? No a American hero. Not sum gang banger with a 9mm. A real man not a food stamp warrior slanging drugs.
You're both dumb, neither "hero" or "OG." My Uncle who served in Vietnam would laugh. He always said what every verteran knows: War is hell, it isn't "cool" or "badass." You watch too many movies.
Dark MattR... You must not have served. All Soldiers arewho deploy are heros, the ones who don't make it home are more then hero's
Chris Lesemann The “older guys” as E-40 said in a song once.
Jaime Zana you couldn't be anymore disrespectful with that og bullshit. He was drafted. He probably never thought he would have to kill anybody in his life and was forced to. He didnt ask for those memories. Hes definitely suffered from his time there and probably is not proud of it at all. I guarantee whatever life he wanted to have before that took a complete 180. Have some damn respect man. He was just a regular guy that didnt want anything to do with what hes talking about
Being British I am grateful my country stayed out of Vietnam. I have seen that wall in Washington and in 1998 I went to Vietnam. I cannot imagine the hardships that those poor American boys went through, the constant terror, never knowing when danger could come, the heat and the hostility of their own people when returning home. We must also remember the suffering of the Vietnamese and Cambodian people too, always under the constant threat of another air raid..I recall passing through the old DMZ and seeing cemetery after cemetery, all with Communist symbols over the gates, hundreds of young men, many little more than boys buried in each one, and I saw scours of such cemeteries. As I said I saw the wall in Washington, the names etched onto it, like the Vietnamese in the cemeteries I saw in Vietnam, the men behind the names on the wall were mostly young men, with all their lives ahead of them, back during the war these men and the ones buried in the old DMZ cemeteries were enemies, but no longer, now they are united, united in death and I hope in peace. . I remember a woman I met in Vietnam, I complimented her on her excellent English, she told me she had been married to a GI who promised to take her to America but he was killed in the Mekong Delta, so much misery and grief all around, civilians and soldiers from both sides, only time will heal the scars. Though my country stayed out of Vietnam and I know no one who fought in that war I give our American cousins my respect. My own father is dead now,(He died in 1998) he fought in Normandy in WW2, I remember he never talked about the war, most vets don't , they just want to forget, not wanting to be reminded of that terrible times in their lives. Yet I can still see my father with tears in his eyes when he watched on TV as the queen placed a wreath of poppies on the Cenotaph (Memorial) in London. 50 years on and the sight of the Queen laying the wreath still brought tears to his eyes, somethings a person never forgets, no matter how hard he tries. I believe all veterans are deserving of respect, whether they fought in WW2, Vietnam or the Gulf, for people like me who has never been to war we cannot even begin to imagine what the vets went through and with many of them are still going though, the dreams and nightmares that will torment them for the rest of their lives.
I’m a Marine and come from a long line of men who served our country in my family. Thank you for your story.

Welcome home brother!
The service of murdering?
Kill or get killed. What other option do you have in war? Just walk away?
I answered to the guy who said service for murder
GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER!!! U WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY PRAYERS BROTHER !!! FROM A DAV !!!
Much Respect. I used to think 17-18 if I was drafted I would definitely go, do my duty and become a man through war. Every young man tries to figure out what it means to be a man. I'm 23 now, and within that 5 years I've realized a man doesn't do what he thinks a man should do but does genuinely what he thinks is the right move to make. Being drafted at that young age is a horrible thing.
You're basically fighting for the rich who use the mask that is patriotism. Now I'm awake, I would never die for the bankers or billionaires.
Kyle Binter goin to war doesn't make u a man bro, living through life and it's demons does
Ron Happold You become a man after puberty runs it's course and you grow into adulthood. It's got nothing to do with spirituality or finance, possessions or position.
There's no key to the meaning of existence and there's no set path to 'becoming' an adult male referred to as a 'man'.
You exhibit the exact same romanticism you just criticised.
Jester Head Thank you for saying this. Absolutely perfectly put.
Jester Head basically
"I carried the image of the dancin' man for a long time."
Whats he mean dancing? Never heard that term used in someone being shot...
@@redseaford9426 means getting thrown around by the impulse
Red Seaford The guy most like had an instinctual struggle of trying to survive. His natural instinct is to run from the pain, but with that much pain at once he probably panicked and it resulted in a “dancing” man. Flailing around in agony as he tries to escape the pain
Red Seaford you know how in the movies when someone is riddled with bullets and they kinda flail around before falling?.....that’s what he means
The "dancing" is actually caused by the mass of the bullets throwing your body around from the inside. A shockwave from multiple directions. Similar to punching someone. That much mass at that speed and your body is going in whatever direction the lead wants.
I like the way this vet presents his story. You know he was the real deal and he’s not bullshitting. Good job!
I'd of been pissin and shitting myself the whole time I was on that bus.
Burbing Berries ur not wrong bud
Burbing Berries its normal to have fear ..tis what keeps us alive
al zolez Coming from the brave man sitting behind a keyboard
al zolez truth is you would be dead ..person without fear to say fools rush in
I have military combat experience. Ive fought in WW1,WW2,Vietnam,Afghanistan,Europe,Thailand,The Middle east and Russia. True they were video games but the graphics were extremely realistic and i once suffered a terrible head wound tripping over my dog on my way to the bathroom for a piss break. I was also a pow for a month when my parents grounded me for a month. War is Hell.
I couldn't fucking imagine just living your normal happy life then to be thrust into an abhorrent situation in which you couldn't imagine in your worst dreams. Thank you for your service sir. I'm don't even posses a tenth of the bravery and courage you and many other veterans have.
But why saying thanks, though?
If I live something horrible with little sense to me, made for geopolitical reasons, I wouldn't hear or care about a '' thank you '', especially if I'm not even a volunteer. Actually that would probably piss me off.
I kind of understand that it's probably a matter of respect for what one lived, but what a horrible thing to hear for that. Thank you for ruining your life, thank you for ruining their life...maybe thank you for being there instead of me or my father? ( Not pointing this at you...). I don't know.
the only thing in all that bull shit rambling you got right. is you don't know
The way he talks about his "dancing man" is so heartbreaking. He gave a name to his memory, you can imagine he's been through hundreds of nightmares just to have that close relation. You can be traumatized more by what you experience more than what you do
Some trivia from a Vet site.
- As of the Census taken during August, 2000, the surviving U.S. Vietnam Veteran population estimate is: 1,002,511. During this Census count, the number of Americans falsely claiming to have served in-country is: 13,853,027. By this census, FOUR OUT OF FIVE WHO CLAIM TO BE Vietnam vets are not.
- Myth: Common Belief is that most Vietnam veterans were drafted.
Fact: 2/3 of the men who served in Vietnam were volunteers. 2/3 of the men who served in World War II were drafted. Approximately 70% of those killed in Vietnam were volunteers.
I'd like to see a source on that cause I'm pretty sure most people didn't want to have anything to do with that war
+John Hersh It shouldn't surprise you at all. It's just a form of Münchausen. The person knows how these Vets were treated when they came back and knows how Vets are treated today and wants some of that attention. It's no different than wearing a hat with the logo of a sports team or racing team on it. Locally we had a fellow who had convinced his friends and neighbors that he served as a SEAL in the early 1960's. He was a Vet and received VA benefits but when he died it became clear he had lied about his age. He would have been in middle school when he claimed to have been incountry.
Today in the US you can buy a hat that says your are a Vet and every checkout person and other worker you meet thanks you for your service.
+MajWMartin sorry, no I know there's so many douche bags out there who walk around pretending they are vets and it pisses me off. But with my source question I was talking about how you said most people enlisted themselves instead of getting drafted, which I thought was the complete opposite
+John Hersh Sorry but at the time of the war the US still had occupation armies in Japan and Germany, as well as several places like Turkey, England, and most US territories. Draftees tended to be sent there because they would have less than 2 years left to serve after training while an enlistee would have at least have at least that time left. Oddly enough many draftees who served in Vietnam would sign on for a second tour because the difference between a combat zone and occupation zone was so great. The spit and polish of an occupation army just wasn't attractive to them. Not a majority mind you but far more than a few.
My father is a vet. He rarely does any more than acknowledge he is a vet to anyone including his family. The only time he ever would share any war stories is at his annual reunion with other vets. As a kid I would listen from the motorhome window as they swapped stories by the fire over beers. I understand why he has never missed a reunion.
Why is it blurred?
I'm sorry you saw that Rick. It's not what a good people, wanting to be married and settled down should experience, especially a teenager. Thank-you for doing what you did and seeing what you saw to protect me.
What was the war in Vietnam protecting you from?
Communist expansion.
Luke Brody it expanded anyways...
as it did in Cuba, but look at both countries now.
It's called a proxy war. Like the one with the Soviets in Afghanistan.
haha dont be daft, the vietnam war was useless.. if america didnt attack nothing would of happened and you know it
I clicked on the link to watch Rick Hazen's full story. This RUclips video is good, but it is just a fraction of this Vietnam vet's experience. Watch the complete video & come away with a new found appreciation of what these brave men lived through, and how that experience lives on inside of them in the form of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

there is no glory in war just death and destruction and i wish we as a species would stop trying to kill each other it makes no sense.....if u think about it u never survive war you either die in it or it haunts u for the rest of your life....some men are able to bury the feelings and move on and have a "normal" life while others are never the same again

well, you have to follow orders. Otherwise you would be courtmartialed.
I was listening to another video earlier by a chap Bill Mcdonald. He said that he was ordered to go and kill a line of marching enemy. He said 'no it doesn't feel right'. His 'gunner' ( he said, i think they were in helicopters) was given the same order. He said 'me neither, I'm with Bill, I trust his instinct. The superior officer got really uppity as you can imagine, but they went to look and found it was a line of children following a priest to the vegetable garden.

The Vietnam War was predicated on the lie of the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, used as justification for U.S intervention into Vietnam it was a complete fabrication, it simply did not happen. I dont blame this guy exactly, the U.S instituted a draft, essentialy making it illegal not to fight in this criminal war. Having said that however I would not thank someone for invading another people nations and contributing to one of the worst war crimes of the 20th Centuary. And would not encourage this blind hero worship for veterans of illegal wars, but the U.S propaganda machine is efficient at what it does, so to some extent many cant really be blamed for being the victims of government targeted brainwashing.
fuckin service... these cunts were all tricked into going to fight a war based on a lie.... poor bastards
Bob Cotter thank you God bless you
Enabler + The VC murdering and forcing the citizens into commieism was fabricated? The endless stream of NVA into the south, warring to conquer and enslave was fabricated? Your understanding was fabricated by the same commies. The US won the war quickly. The occupation was costly. Russia, China and N. Vietnam won the propaganda war in N. America. And your understanding is another proof.
Commenter Five Vietnam never attached us. We had no right. The war was started on a lie.
THANK YOU for your service. Such a terrible thing for you, and all those young men, to have to see and experience. I cant even IMAGINE the fear and horror, and the memories you (and they) had to carry with you for the rest of your life/their lives. You did what you had to do, it wasn't your choice. Again, THANK YOU, and God bless.

Communism was rapidly spreading every year prior to the Vietnam war. Hundreds of thousands of people were absorbed each year. The US stood up to communist expansion and communism began to recede. Our Vietnam vets kept millions of people from being enslaved.

When you think about it, Vietnam Vets today are like WWII vets in the 60s 70s and 80s. Back then, there were WWII vets and then Vietnam came along and we were at war again. Today we have both WWII and Vietnam Vets but the Vietnam Vets are younger, and we have the current troops in the Middle East fighting. In 20-30 years, the Vietnam Vets will be like WWII vets today, and Troops that fought in the Middle East are gonna be like our Vietnam Vets today. Weird, but kind of fun to think about
Yeah....fun....
always be vets, US needs blood money
cool story.
Except that the WWII guys wouldn't accept those who returned from Vietnam for a very long time. Not many would. And no generation of United States fighting men had a stranger assortment of morale, personnel, new equipment, and tactics than those in Vietnam.

I began thinking to myself, 'I have a full dress twelve mile hike at O800 tommorow...' 'Well I'll go sir!', that was the best descion I could've made. For the next few days, I sat with an eye doctor making sure I could see hundreds of yards, pick out slight detail diffrences and all that good stuff. I became a spotter. No, not a sniper spotter who was a calculator with binoculars. Rather, a plane spotter. I sat in the bottom spot on the plane looking around for hostiles, where needs cleared, crashes, even where the people are most dense at. I loved being shot at, not for the fear of it but, it made my job hundreds of times easier! 'Yes, sir. They're at this coordinate. Yes, sir I'm sure. They surely are shooting us from there, Sir.'.
I remember my saddest time finding a newly made friend in boot. He was a special forces huey pilot. At O300 he crashed. All but him died on impact. He lived. I have several friends on that huey. After being massively injured. He was sent back home for as much help as, we didn't have much. I saw him just two years ago for the first time. He didn't want to show his face as, he was scared of what I would say. All I did was hug him. Ensuring him it was fine.
I have never been spotted as a baby killer. I got home, I went to a rest room and switched out of my military clothes. I even went as far as buying garbage bags and putting my military issued bag in it. Until one night I was in a bar. A guy called me a baby killer, no idea how the hell he even found me. I didn't even have anything depicting my service. Not even a ball cap. Yet, he must've tracked me down or something. I don't know why but, he did none the less.
I regret none of what I did. I did what my orders where. I had it easy and baby like compared to my brothers in arms. That's my story."
Wow... very powerful
Rick,
Thankyou for your service. My best friend John "Randy" Weir served in B company 3/12-4th Infintry. He was killed outside of Kontum, March 11,1969.
Did you know him? He was on a LRRP team. I would love to hear more about him if at all possible.
Thanks Sp4 Brown

@ 500 yards open sight M-16A1, weapons qualification; 9 shots in the heart, weapon jammed, I cleared it, then last shot was in the head. I am "Squackhunter" (Squackhunter is what they called Ky. Marines) U.S.M.C. No I would not have been a necklace man... maybe LRRP. The world needs warriors because evetyone can't be a bleeding heart < see what I did there?
Some things we saw can't be unseen, or forgotten..most we are still not sure how to talk about..those things do not translate into words.. still in the back of my mind the memories are there.. waiting for a noise, a smell, then the goosebumps and trembling take over..
You can tell by the way he moves his feet he's a dancing man, no time to sleep......Bee Gees

Both my great grandfathers served in Korea with God's blessing one is still here's with us, the other died last year, this video makes me think about him and his stories he told. The babies the majority of mine and the previous generation's have become is honestly sad and pathetic.
My first kill in Nam was a bottle of Jack Daniels!
Thanks Ricky my friend
Thank you for your service
i can't imagine the thought these veterans had when they came home and people asked them how it was like to kill another human being

Much respect . Can't imagine being forced into a fight with your hands tied cause that's what happened in that war .
Thank you for your service in Vietnam.
Though reference's today will call it a war, to this day it offically never was. The military requested funds for new and modern equipment. Congress stated that with the surplus of WW1 and 2 still available and in working order, what would be the purpose, so the answere was a "NO!"
The U.S. involment in Nam allowed us to utilize almost every available piece of military hardware and their replacements, thus afterwards leaveing a vast hole to be filled by new and modern equipment. Which when presented to Congress was approved. Yes, it cost a few thousand lives, but the economy involving the millions still alive prospred to the Nth. degree. There is an idoma that goes: "The means of the many, out weight the means of the few". Governments utilize that to justify their actions. Yea, it sucks if your one of the few, but considering the many has priority.
If one was to read the all the available data today about the Incident at Pearl Harbor, they would realize what I am talking about is true. The samething can be applied to the incident involving 911. The difference is, sufficent time as not transpired yet. Give it another decade or two, and though the data will be available, it's old news, and only new news gets attention.
Sincerely, asspained american still upset he lost the war
chetrok1 Another buttmad amerifat. Hope you enjoy your clinton presidency.
