“Anybody who rejects legend across the board as simply being invented is just dead wrong. Anybody who tries to use it as an accurate account of what really happened is no less wrong. Some place in the middle is where the truth is and it’s hard to find.”

This is a pretty good vid. As a Christian who is currently studying ritual and culture in the Ancient Near East and has an obsession with the Bible, you did a great job hitting the nail on the head with these mythic principles. Many have proposed many definitions of myth and mythology. I personally like how Robert Segal puts it, that myth is a story that is significant (Segal 2015, 10 -29). It really does many cultures a disservice - from indigenous cultures to ancient religions - when we make the debate about truth and falsehood. Science and pseudo-science. When really it is about the meaning (ontology) and the axiology (the value of things and their purpose in the world.) I find it embarrassing when I see my fellow Christians trying to dogmatically force people to believe the Bible literally. It is impossible - as you perfectly show with Jonah. The point is the theological truths. It's really important that we are sympathetic and cast our biases aside when reading and studying these mythological texts - it has personally enriched my spiritual life as a more generous and selfless person, that's what the Bible ultimately is about.

that's very well said and one of the purposes of the book I am writing is to help people adopt that sort of view on Biblical teachings, or the teachings of whatever religion they were brought up in. Don't throw it out because the fundamentalists can't reconcile their dogma with modern science! etc

Just yesterday I watched your video about Aryan Invasion theory and India.
I usually don't watch those videos because it's usually some British or European guy who is telling Indians how their religion, culture and ancestors are just European substitutes and lots of other nonsense.
You hit the nail in specifically explaining the points about who Aryans were, I have read a lot and understand it but I never was able to bring it into a concise story to dismantle the Eurocentric/European Supremacist Ideas that are well spread in this field.
Also, thankyou for explaining how Out of India theory feels like just an opposite reaction to the Aryan Invasion theory aka a reactionary theory with no real basis other than nationalism or frankly anger/angst.
Thankyou very much for these videos.
My Interest in this field has reawakened in this field because of you.

aww right on that's awesome to hear! I do think it's possible to just set aside the extreme points of view on either side and just follow the scholarship and the evidence and the cultural history, but it does seem rare on the internet where extreme points of view get the most clicks. But there are people out there just talking about this stuff normally, I had to go find them. Another hurdle is striking a balance between respecting cultural transmission of knowledge and the importance of folklore to that transmission, vs the modern scientific understanding of cultural evolution and human dispersal.

My next video will be about the Indus Valley seals, and after that will be the Vedic world tree, the Ashvattha - but that has a lot to do with Shiva, so we will be getting into some of his character there. I believe most of the idea about him predate the Indo-Aryans.

They say Shiva creates a new universe every 2160 million years, 2160 * 12 equals the great year, to keep us in sync with the seasons we add a new day every 4 years, 2160 / 4 equals 540 leap days added, / the 7-Day week, 540 / 7 equal 77.14, as you see 7 + 7 equals 14, but 77 + 14 equals 91, the number of days in a season. Siva returns like an echo, and Hebrew Shiva mean 7, play 7 in reverse, you here it's say Novus Latin meaning new, play "Novus Universe" in reverse it says "77", meaning new universe, is Shiva known for leaping into Souls known as avatars. Every 77 weeks Venus retrograde for 43 days, 4 + 3 equal 7, Venus spanned seven weeks behind the Sun, 7 x 7, and every 77 months Venus and Mars conjunct three times in 9 months, Men Are from Mars and women from Venus is that old saying, in the center of 7 you can find Eve hiding, between the S'N, the words "Sin Eve" played in Reverse says Venus, in the heavens, Shiva would be Orion, play the words "They All Rule" in reverse it says Orion

@@MythicConcepts I see that Kali represents the disaster periods and large kill offs of creatures, but mostly bad humans/demons...and in these cases, she gets extreme with her anger and out of control, and the only way to stop her at that point, so Shiva(which I see as the calmer part of her personality), lays in front of her and let's her trample him, so to invoke her emotions to regret/ think about her actions before she destroys the world,...and so it calms her down and stopped her...

@@johnjuan1139 Kali is our Sun, when it goes micro-nova, a Black Ash Cloud, realigning us with a new pole star, when we roll over, a 12,000 year cycle. September 4th - 8th 2040, all the visible planets will align with Spica, the hand star in Virgo, looking like she is holding a Spear, or a Spiculum, the 8th is the last day of the alignment, the first day of the New Moon, taking place at the feet of Virgo, while the Sun is at the back feet of Leo, on the birthday of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Did you not read my comment, Orion's club (Lakulin, last Avatar of Shiva) is the location of the Summer Solstice Sun, Spiculum is the location of the Winter Solstice Sun, a little bloody red spot, a speculum is used by doctors to look where babies come from, Scorpio, is known as the Sexual Organ, Sagittarius the Hips & Thighs, hiding Ophiuchus in between, as the Womb, as Orion was known as Sah, Sahu "the Hidden One". Go backwards 9 months from September 6th, puts the Sun in the center of Ophiuchus, which is 6,606 hours, I used the 6th of September, the day of the Dark Moon in 2040, because it's my birthday, its how I found that alignment, I saw a chart showing the Solar Sunspot cycle dips down in 2040, before raising again, wanted to know how old I would be when the Sun goes Boom. If you play the words "Say There Is A Guest" in reverse, it says "Sagittarius", the words "They All Rule" in reverse says "Orion" I call Shiva, who they say loved to get Stoned, play the words "Seek Reefer" in reverse, it says Ophiuchus, 3 sevens(777) make a 60 degree triangle, 60x7=420, time to get Stoned, the words "He Knows Dope" in reverse "420". Sagittarius was known as Pabilsag, the father of Damu "The Child", a Healing God, a Dying and Rising god, son of the Goddess Gula, the Harp Star just above Ophiuchus, the star Vega, which was once a pole star. something to think about. Beautiful. Glad you're back with new content. Take your time - this is definitely your calling. This is in essence our story - the story of humanity and anthropology. What is 100% certain is that 5, 10, 20 and 50 generations ago our own forefathers (and mothers) understood and perceived things differently - it's fascinating. Could you please dedicate an episode to Egyptian mythology. I was recently in Mexico and highly recommend the National Anthropological Museum - where I saw a statue of Coatlicue, the Aztec mother of the deities and I specifically asked why there were so many hands and was told that these were hanging from a necklace she was wearing! Hello David. Absolutely love your channel. The Kali video was sensationally good and you’ve followed it up with another brilliant meditation on myths and their power. You are so well read and informed on this it’s quite mind-blowing. Also, very refreshing in today’s world to see someone brave enough to illuminate spiritual truth and to work countercultural to the zeitgeist of oversimplification. Eagerly awaiting your next video! I’d also like to offer one third level of interpretation to the Jonah myth-as you say not in conflict with yours, just by way of regarding the “object” from another angle: one of the details we’re given in the all-too-brief biblical account is that Jonah’s flesh is bleached white by his time in the whale. Therefore, when Jonah turns up at Ninevah, he makes a pretty terrifying entrance. I think what this subtly conveys is that in a bizarre way, had Jonah not disobeyed God’s edict, he would have failed to deliver the message! People would not have taken him as seriously as they did when he showed up acid-bleached white and smelling like a corpse-pile. Therefore, the story reflects an irony in that the more we try to run away from our dharma or destiny or fate or wyrd or whatever term we wish to use (perhaps we might even say: from ourself or our conscience), the nearer to it we run. Jonah only succeeded because he initially denied himself-denied God. Thus, denial / failure / ignorance is the first step on any spiritual path, in a strange sense. As Coomaraswamy observed: “Myth embodies the nearest approach to absolute truth that can be stated in words.” That absolute truth is not, as you rightly point out, literal, but so much deeper than that! Anyway, thank you again for making an incredible video and channel.

Haha I like that you did this video although I didn’t take the original video as you claiming the myths to be false
But the new religion that has formed around science uses myth as essentially a derogatory term against religion but ironically the very rejection of these ideas as falsehoods when it’s more that that’s how information was handed down in antiquity.. I think limits the potential of human understanding… there is a LOT of value in ancient ideas that science is unable to be used to understand but stories are excellent for doing so. The biggest problem between religion and science is that the majority of people on both sides believe their worldviews are contradictory.. but to me it seems like they are complementary and I also love finding the connections between the two as well because they actually do help you understand both better by taking in both aspects of human investigation of the universe

This is shaping up to be quite an interesting set of videos.
That said, I do think even your definition of "myth" is rather narrower than it could usefully be for a channel with this name.
I completely agree that myths are conceptually distinct from "things that aren't true" since it's not the function (certainly not the primary function) of a myth to be "true" or not.
We humans seem to have evolved to rather like telling each other stories and it seems to me that "myths" in the broader sense of "stories we tell ourselves to make sense of the world and/or to give us a road map for our lives" extend well beyond the realm of what we in the West think of as "religion" or "sacred stories".
You don't have too look hard in the realms of politics or policymaking or even the hard sciences to find lots of stories (not all of them grounded in mere "facts" - a slippery concept whose very knowability is arguably a myth) that effectively simplify how we describe a very complicated universe so that we can make sense of at least manageable parts of it.
Keep up the good work: this is potentially a very deep pit you're exploring!

So would Kali's sword be equivalent to Occam's razor?
Fascinating how many religions and mythologies have the "three days" resurrection story. Jesus in a tomb dead for three days, Sumerian Inanna in the underworld dead for three days, in Zoroastrians just after you die your soul will hover around your body for three days, The same curious notion of death and resurrection after three days is entertained by the Unmatjera and Kaitish two tribes of Central Australia and the Nandi of East Africa.
Cycle of death and resurrection after three days like the monthly disappearance and reappearance of the moon.

There is nothing such as tamil religion..
Tamil nadu have highest no. Of hindu temples in india ..
Most of the temples in north were destroyed by invaders..

    • @MythicConcepts

the reason why Hinduism has been preserved so strongly in the south is because of Muslim persecution of Hindus in the north. The ancient Tamils did have a different religion that was not Vedic Hinduism, although some of those ideas were of course absorbed into Hindiusm

@@MythicConcepts yeah ,but islamic invaders attacked south india too and southern kings fought them with enough bravery to protect temples..
Also tamil empires like cholas went in whole south east asia and build big temples there like angkor wat ..
Whereas north indians only went as far as afganistan...
And tamil and sanskrit both are civilizational languages of sanatana Dharma, even today the only village in world where people still speak sanskrit is in south india ,
Many people try to create differences , but both of Sanskrit and tamil coexisted with each other...

I suppose a deity in Vedic or Tantric belief system, is significantly much more than just “mythological concept” per se, instead a deity such as Kali or Siva, is considered a personal manifestation of the Divine that is not only viewed as a mere metaphor for certain cosmic powers and qualities but also revered as a coalescence of spiritual energies to be invoked and established in an entity/idol either by way of sacred ritual based devotion OR regarded as an object of meditation approached through strict yoga practices as a means for self-realisation within oneself.
So, essentially Vedic/Tantric deities are as much as they are mythological and metaphorical cosmic concepts, they are also very much a mystical and metaphysical reality, in fact, the latter may very well be more spiritually relevant than the former, especially given 1 in 6 people in the world today are still followers of this very ancient faith. I hope that helps in your further research.

    • @MythicConcepts
      @MythicConcepts  Год назад +2

the number of people who are using religion to ascess such energies pales in comparison the the number of people taking religion literally, so in terms of making the world a better place and helping people get more out of religion, understanding that these are concepts is FAR more important that learning how to do mystical woo woo, assuming such is even possible. The concepts are far more important, and far more misunderstood.
If there is a coalescence of energy that is "Kali," she'll manifest wherever her concepts are present, not when she's invoked or bid by humans. You "invoke" Kali by practicing the principles, not by "ritual magic" which is just arbitrary

  • @JALaflinOfficial
    @JALaflinOfficial Год назад

Great video. I feel like it's such a western thing to try to attach literal meaning to cultural stories. You can tell by looking at the "literalization" of Judeo-Christian texts. There are multiple creation myths in the Bible, but modern translations and gatekeeping have worked to amalgamate them into a theoretically "cohesive" narrative.

Great video... though I think there are a lot of religious people who see these stories as literally real. I mean at least when it comes to Gods like Shiva and Vishnu (in those forms), people might accept that they are more like aspects/ideas, since most Hindus in day to day life refer to them all collectively as 'the God' (in almost monotheistic manner), but when it comes to stories of their Avatars like Ramayan, Mahabharat, many get really pissed if you call them myths or stories and insist that they are real history.

12:13, there's actually some science to that, if you ever watch a debate (assuming that all parties remain civil), the person who uses anecdotes in their argument tends to be far more convincing than the person who just uses numbers, the main reason seems to be that we almost instantly recognize stories and that is how information is best conveyed. I am not aware of any actual study on that, just calling attention to an observation. Myths, as in stories of gods and heroes and monsters and great deeds, seem to be just the most effective and efficient way concepts not required for day to day/hour to hour etc survival is conveyed... well that's more of my own hypothesis based on what I have observed.

I'd love to see your take on these gods, and maybe even comparisons between gods or legendary figures like Sun Wukong and Hanuman, or Parvati and maybe Nuwa? Idk if they could be likened unto each other, maybe Parvati and a mother goddess like Leto or Frigg? I mostly would like to see the Wukong/Hanuman comparison though since it seems like you really REALLY try to do your research.
