Set during the Spanish era, a period in history when modern dresses came from Europe, the story follows the family of Dona Carmen, her husband, and their visitors from Germany and France, as well as their housemaids.
While busy cooking food for her husband and visitors, Dona Carmen found their silverware missing. Lumeng, the housekeeper, denied seeing the kitchen items and said that the maids are responsible for preparing them.
After serving the food, Dona Carmen asked her husband to sit with them and listen to their discussion about the dresses worn by women in Europe. However, Don Felipe disagreed.
One of the visitors, Andres, a photographer from Europe, told Don Felipe that it was just fine for his wife to listen to them. But the other visitor told Don Felipe that it was inappropriate for a woman to be so open-minded about ideology. Another visitor said that women should wear modest dresses, not like those from Europe, and expressed that such a law is from God in the Bible. Andres wondered about the law for men and emphasized that a good attitude and a kind heart are more important than what is seen from the physical attributes of a person. Don Felipe was insulted and politely ended their discussion.
Don Felipe attempted to slap his wife because he was put to shame when Andres accidentally saw him prior to leaving their house. Andres expressed his gratitude to Don Felipe and wished Dona Carmen calmness and modesty, just like Don Felipe.
One of the maids was sobbing when she ran to Don Felipe and revealed that Lumeng had hidden all the missing silverware in her room.
Lumeng was fired by Don Felipe. Prior to leaving, Lumeng mixed poison in the coffee of Don Felipe, but Dona Carmen prevented him from drinking it.
Don Felipe realized the truth about the statements of Andres upon learning about Lumeng, who had respectable looks but did evil things as compared to the looks of the maid, who was honest. Because of the situation, Don Felipe agreed with Carmen when she reminded him that he needed to extend his apologies to his friends.
