You're doing SO well Leigh! Not many people balance full time work, patreon, social media, private creative time, social time, caring for furry and feathery friends, watering plants regularly + being cute every single day so imo you're killing it. Perhaps it might help to remember that your audience adores you and appreciates your work no matter what, so even when you feel like you're not delivering your best or that you're not enjoying it, there's no pressure from us to 'do better' or 'enjoy yourself more because if its creative, it has to be fun'! No pressure when you're having a great time, and no pressure when you aren't. You can take your time to figure out what works best for you, and no one that really matters is going o complain about it xxxx p.s. the colour scheme of your bed linens is TOPS
I have the same feeling, definitely need to find the 'joy' in painting again and doing it with love not just to do it. I hope you feel over it soon, and me! I don't have any advice either, but burn out can be super draining... fingers crossed for us both
I work an admin job 8-5 everyday, so I have a small window of time to make art...most of the time, I don't end up painting when I get home because of that "limited time" pressure. Then it sometimes causes me to resent art in a way. Does that make sense? Anyway, now flipping the coin to what you are experiencing...even though you are an artist and you're making art, there is this..."limited time" in which you have to do these things, yet still find a way to create something for you. As much as it sucks, I am comforted to know that others struggle with this balance. Whether it's trying to create after you work at an office job, or trying to find time to create just for yourself after long day of being a full time artist, the truth is...it's hard! But luckily, there's a kick ass art community cheering each other on, and sharing their experiences, too. Thank you for this vlog!
Totally makes sense. When people think of a full time artist I feel like the expectation is that I make art almost all the time where it’s usually the other way around 😅
Just sayin as one of your original art tier patrons, I’m obsessed with all of the ones you’ve shown here but I think I speak for a lot of us when I say your art is always worth the wait if ya gotta take extra time for yourself to get into the clear headspace to create. 🌱 Sorry about the art rut Leigh, plz take all the time you need, & wishing you all the good vibes!!! 🐯❤️
I totally understand the feeling of having a passion > turning it into a business > passion part becomes a side-gig to the business part. You deserve to make the time you need, the clearing-out-a-few-hours for guiltless painting and experimenting, whatever the outcome. Even if we have to wait a bit longer for a video or a shop update, it's so important that you still find a way to do the stuff you love, rather than just grind on the business aspects.
Try doing the mini paintings outside or just in a different environment - go to a gallery or museum and sketch. Another thing you can try is tapping your brush onto a stick and painting with the paper on the wall. Sounds odd but you might just need the reset.
This video actually brought me ~~super chill vibes and good times~~,so thank you for that ;) ! I haven't been able to make art in MONTHS, for some reason, but watching these chill studio vlogs makes me feel better. thank you!
Ive been feeling the same way! I found that using different brushes and colours as well as a learning a new art style is slowly helping me get out of my slump... also doing more art for myself instead of for posting helps!
It’s actually refreshing to hear an artist like you say you are going through a period where you feel like you can’t paint. There is a wave artists go through where they are proud of what they do then they feel like their art isn’t really that good. It’s because you are growing as an artist and start noticing areas to improve on. Keep your head up! You create beautiful pieces. 😉
when I am in an Art Rut I like to do this exercise - a painting session where I do a series of paintings but I only give myself 2 or 5 minutes per painting. I will maybe do 10 - 15 paintings like this without a break. This helps me to find what feels good, without thinking to much (no time to think with this exercise). Also nice to do a session together with other people.
It’s not easy to balance a list of To-Do’s and then dive into painting. It feels like your motivation gets zapped by all the other tasks on your list and then you’re left feeling uninspired and everything feels forced in painting. GAH! I get that. But but but, I just want to say.... making an effort (no matter how small) to make time and create art anyways is admirable in itself! YOU ARE SO FRIGGIN’ AMAZING just for that! You got this girl!! I know you’ll find a way to overcome this struggle! ❤️🙌🏻
Glad you enjoy!! It’s just a human travel neck pillow so he doesn’t have a to wear a cone before his allergy medicine kicks in in the morning. He gets super itchy paws in the fall and kicks his paws nonstop if he’s not medicated 😓
lol i liked your outro, your videos are really cute and chill btw and i love your work ^_^ and i think being a paid artist can definitely feel like a grind, its weird balancing your mentality about it, i always go back and forth on it constantly even after working so long, actually probably especially after working in art for so long lol, i think it's amazing how consistent and hard working you are, it definitely shows and i hope you can feel proud of that, good luck on your house renovation i can't wait to see it!! 🏡
What a great start into the day when I see another video of you!! 😊 And I know the feeling of not enjoying making art. I'm currently creating illustrations for a card game and the illustrations are supposed to be more simple and I'm not happy with the results at all... This takes away all the fun, too... 😭😭😭 Hopefully we'll get through this soon!! 🤞🏻❤️
That stool is amaaazing! I just moved into my first ever studio and Id love to fill it with upcycled stuff! I’ve been vlogging the move in but it doesn’t look quite as awesome as your space! 😆
sometimes it helps me to take whatever supplies I need with me to either a coffee shop or literally an airbnb for the weekend to work on. that way, I don't have access to those "other tasks" on my to-do list and I can actually get them off my mind/won't be tempted to do them instead.
I love how you painted the stool! Thanks for sharing, I’ve felt similarly about art so often and it’s nice seeing successful artists feel the same way. Weed helps.
I recently found your channel and watching them have given me a good distraction from all the anxiety that I have been feeling these past few days. Love your videos and your art. You are super talented. Love from your new subbie from Singapore ❤️🤗
Oh leigh!! While I don't wish hard or frustrating times for you, I'm so glad you talked a little about your honest struggles this week. Love the video as always and hope you can keep truckin along 🧡
aaah I love that stool! I think I understand how you feel. I had a similar experience when I was overwhelmed by freelance work and I couldn't relax and do art just for myself. Even if a deadline wasn't urgent, I couldn't stop and do other things because I thought that I had to invest my time and energy on clients' work, because THAT WAS THE PRIORITY. I hope you'll find a balance ❤️ Love your art and your videos! ❤️
you are so amazing, i can understand completely that feeling, I have the same feeling right now.... I love the way you are so authentic and inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing your artist life.
I love the stool so much 😭 I think this year has really screwed with our creativity. I read something about how we've all used up our surge capacity dealing with high levels of stress this year. Now we're all questioning why we can't work at a 'normal' rate... But we're all dealing with so much STUFF, whether that's work or life or family or health, we don't give ourselves enough credit for what we have been achieving - i.e. like, managing to cope with the most bonkers year on record, lol. Anyway Leigh I love your videos and they've been one of the highlights of my 2020 ♥️ sending love xx
AAAA i missed your premiere but now I get to enjoy it many times over!! Thanks for joining my first premiere hehe :-) the colors on those chair legs are super juicy v nice ; - o I watched this vlog a second time with my mom and her interest peaked when you mentioned facebook marketplace bc she is also an active second hand home goods hunter!! Loved this vlog, thank you for blessing us with another video :^))
It can be overwhelming sometimes having so much going on and still sit down to make art and do it in a relaxed headspace =/. Hope it gets better! That stool came out really nice! And looked like a more relaxing painting moment haha 😊
thanks for sharing your kind of art blockade ! I'm struggling with that too and it feels kinda good to hear this from you too ! Great idea though with the stool ! I'm thinking of painting mine too because I hate mine haha
I feel so bad for you and am glad I'm from the future to report you went to Alaska and came back so exited and energized and made all sorts of art you liked. Love you...
Your theory seems legit. You have a lot of projects going on that need your time and attention. They empty your cup. It's good practice even if you're not loving the finished works right now. You know, working consistent-leigh. I'll show myself out.
wow another vlog? hahah good morning Toadie! I love the colors on your stool. ^6^ Have a great day Leigh, you've working so hard. ^^ Moving, cleaning, reno, filming and editing and working in your studio... wow. It took me 3 weeks to edit and upload one studio vlog... I just finished it this morning . haha BTW I am enjoying watching your old ones lately.. I love that part with your mom in it too. ^^
Yes! I totally understand what you're saying about making art just to cross it off your list. I'm currently a junior in high school and I'm taking two art classes, both of which assign a lot of work. It's the worst because I feel like I don't know how to create under time pressure and all my creativity is gone. It's definitely something I need to work on throughout this year. If anyone has advice I'd love to hear it!
It sometimes helps to switch to a completely different or unfamiliar medium and play around with it for a while. Kind of makes you focus more on the creative process than the art itself. That's my experience, at least.
DOOD. Finishing work because I want it done, and not for the joy of making it. I feel this so hard rn. Thanks for sharing, I’m sorry you’re dealing with it as well but it’s oddly comforting knowing others are experiencing the same things.
Love your videos 🥰 thank you for sharing!! Not feeling like there's time to make art just to make art is such a mood (and I hate it) 😭 I changed up my sleep schedule a few weeks ago so I could have an hour or two of fresh morning time to draw/create before being weighed down by everything I do and consume in a day. It's helped a lot with the enjoyment part, at least!
