I usually use graphite with a wide range of hardness for other artwork but for these sketches a mechanical pencil is enough, as long as I control the pressure :)
Do not stress yourself about it. sometimes it can be hard to pick up, as long as you keep it fun it will be fine. Even just random doodles that do not even make sense can help, that is how I learned alot of 3d and shading tricks. Often it is training the eye to pick things up and muscle memory in the hand, and the best way to get that is through just drawing.
