A handfull of salt flats n/a cars have gone over 240mph and a few more turbo manual transmission cars have gone faster. This car was the end of an era whe it got beat. Either way, this car is valued just as much as the cars that are faster and it is 23 years old. It's a dope car.

The F1 is truly a bespoke work of engineering. While the Carrera GT may not have the stupendous power of the F1 V12, its symphonic race derived V10 is just as effective in delivering the ultimate driving experience. I love them all.

The McLaren F1 will always remain the greatest production car ever created. It uses a naturally aspirated 627hp BMW V-12 engine and can top out at 240mph, even with today's technology nothing even comes close to that(it beat a 1,001 HP quad turbocharged all electronic Bugatti Veyron in a 1/2 and 1/4 mile drag race). It's not just about the performance of the McLaren F1 either, the car is almost entirely mechanical and it has a spirit to it. Nowadays almost all of the new supercars are tame, they use electronics to dampen the ferocity of the car and take away its spirit. The McLaren F1 is the pinnacle of true automotive engineering, and Gordan Murray's masterpiece.

This surely has to be the greatest road car ever created. When it slowed from 391 to 300 it was almost as if time shifted. The actual difference between 200 and 400 in a roadcar is incredible. I will most likely die never having even seen one let alone sat in one, or, God forbid it, turn the key and drive away, even for just a short amount of time. It's quite depressing actually but what can you do...
Don't feel too bad. Gordon Murray himself had to sell his own F1 after its value got too high. He didn't want to drive a car worth $20 million. His own car that he made... kind of sad, really.
The speed was a by-product of focused engineering and design solutions. The knowledge and technology has moved on but the focused thinking is often not quite as complete as it was with the F1.
Introduced to this car in 1999 on Need for Speed High Stakes when I was 8 years old. I have thought of it and nothing else as the greatest car ever produced since then, an absolute icon that will never be surpassed.
I hope it won't, and will never be. I hope that the F1 will cement itself in history as the last naturally aspirated engine to achieve the fastest top speed.
Gordon Murray is working on a follow up to the F1. It is called the T.50 and will have a higher revving NA V12 engine by Cosworth and will be even lighter than the F1.
Wish they could of thanked Ron Dennis and his vision for this car, without him, the F1 would never of been made. Just wish McLaren would of taken the opportunity in this video to acknowledge that.

I always saw the top speed short clip on your official old site with 320x240px when I was a "little" boy learning something... at primary school's computer science class and that feeling so memorable. :O :) So strange feeling and funny when an average public cars just going 120-130km/h on highway but this car. "Where are we going so fast." :D "It was" a mesmerizing top speed. :)
It was the very first ‘Hypercar’ and has become the ultimate Hypercar and thanks to not too many people buying it, it has now become the rarest of Hypercars and has become almost mythical not just in the automotive world but in the world in general. No other car in my opinion will ever attain such heights again, as we will never see these living fire breathing monsters again.
It is a gem...a milestone of automotive history, superlative in every aspect. It was a phenomenon the likes of which we'll likely never witness again. And it was my automotive first and truest love.

In a drag race, the F1 will still beat a Bugatti Veyron up till around 150 mph....then the Bugattis turbos will take it past. But over a mile...there still isn't much in it. The F1 is a bad ass car...even by today's standards. I can't wait to see what the new Gordon Murray V12 T50 does.....

The similarities between the failed Brabham BT55 and the MP4/4 are with the low engine cover, but this has to do with John Barnard's influence to get Honda to design a low, compact engine to improve the centre of gravity, and is not because of Gordon Murray's previous design on the Brabham. The big lie being floated around is that the BT55 morphed into the MP4/4, which it didn't!

I loved the XJ220, after liking the Porsche 959, then the F40 when it came along. This came so soon after the Jaguar and really, nothing has been as good since.... Yeah, we have the Veyron (despite that being developed on the back of the Volks W12 concept)... To me, McLaren have taken the Exotic towards the Hypercar and no other company has made anything as good as the F1/F1 GTR, based purely on performance
