The lead sing “corey Taylor” had a couple close calls with suicide and he was sexually abused as a kid so he gets all this anger and chaos from all the shit he went through. Snuff is all about when his girlfriend broke up wit him when he was 17 and attempted to kill himself but later realized it made him stronger in the end.

Jeez. They're both amazing beings, and we can feel their pain through their songs, especially Jonathan's 'Korn - Daddy'. Really heart wrenching.

Their masks came from them being "nobodies" from Iowa so they remained nobodies (anonymous). That and they wanted to be judged on their music not their faces. Among other obvious perks of being anonymous and also famous.
I have watched quite a bit of interviews and documentaries and I don't think you are right. Shawn 'Clown' Crahan was the first to wear his clown mask when they gained their first notoriety. The others followed, because it was meant to show a different persona. To show how crazy they could go. Not to be "nobodies", but to have a different identity.
"When the mask comes on, I am completely somebody else" is a (para)phrase that comes to mind.

@@alexv4891 I can remember something similar to him saying that as well, but more often I have heard it stated that they would become somebody else. Especially with (the early) interviews about how brutal it was to wear the masks. It wasn't about being nobody, it was about feeling the pain of being somebody else in a mask (in relation to their lives as "normal" people)
I always knew them to wear the masks so they can walk around in public without being bombarded by fans. Like, if they wanna grab a Bug Mac, they can just...go get one.
So basically when they came out they wanted to be a band that was just about the music. They wore masks, same uniforms and instead of names they just numbered themselves for the 9 members of the band, 0-8. They did this so all the focus would be on the music. Basically it doesnt matter who they are, they are a mask, a uniform and a number. Well turns out they became known for the masks, uniforms and numbers so then the changed the masks to be a symbol of thier personal struggles.

They wore matching outfits and mask on stage, to present themselves as a unit, and not individual musician playing in a band. One other reason for wearing mask, was also because the music industry at that time where more focused on good looks, than ever.

Shawn wore a clown mask to practice one day and everyone loved how you couldn't see his emotions and it creeped them out. They then went on to create a mask of their own based on their personality etc....They've been playing for over 20 years so go check out their prior masks (they get a new mask with each new album and tour).

Was it not that shawn decided last minute to wear a mask at a concert and they went out and bought random masks before the concert, you are probably right about the "creeping them out" part but thats just what i heard
Also yeah the masks represent how they feel inside, so that when they have the mask on, they can do what they want and not regret anything

Slipknot is definitely my favorite band. they’ve been around for 20 years. I’ve seen them live and their show by far is the best concert I’ve ever seen in my life and I’ve been to over 200 shows

That's how it always starts
They wear masks because of Clown (Shawn Crahan) who used to bring clown masks to their rehearsals, so they basically adopted that idea (that's the most commonly known reason). Plus it helps create a unique look for the band. Corey said at one time that they also wear the masks because they were basically no one, so they used the masks to actually become "no one". There are lots of reasons they wear the masks, and now it's become a thing for the band to have different masks for different eras and reveal them to the fans, as well as if they have new members, its like a rite of passage to get a mask and until they get their own; they pretty much wear blank masks until they're allowed to get their own.
There's a lot that goes into the whole mask thing. Also the one that usually directs their music videos is also Clown, so the band have a lot to thank him for.

So the song is actually about the leader singer's ex wife and how he felt trapped in the relationship. The imagery of the morphsuit-sack-thing was someone being unable to escape something, no matter how much they struggled against it.

I’m so happy that people who are open minded to different music taste still exist man.
If you want to understand about the masks it's just because slipknot doesn't want to be remembered for there face and their physical features they have no control of. They want to be the mystery and there is no influence on why the masks look the way they do besides the obvious clown mask. Because the guy who wears the mask grew up with a similar clown mask on his wall when he grew up in Iowa.

This isn't the case respectfully. They started wearing masks because Shawn (Clown) showed up with a clown mask on one day and wouldn't take it off, freaking everyone out. After that they decided to wear them. And the masks are designed by the band members and at least some (not 100% if all) make their mask an expression of their current inner self. The masks also change with every album and these are their most current =)

They invented the mask thing, it is their way of saying it doesn't matter who does what as long as the music is good. They are kind of in their own space musically with that. The more impressive thing to me is that they have 9 people on stage playing instruments and they all have a a part in the music. Also love that they are using beer kegs as instruments.

Slipknot was wearing masks before Corey Taylor (lead singer) joined the group. The mask for some of the members are a representation of the inner animal they have to keep hidden. When they go through an album cycle they changes the masks to represent what they are going through. Some members never go to far away from their original masks just minor tweaks. If you ever get the chance to actually read the lyrics a lot of their messages and meanings are uplifting and how to battle through the ugly in life and let you know m they are normal people that go through shit just like us. Hip hop and rap have mad bars but rock and metal especially slipknot get over looked. leonel joven II the masks didn’t come till after Corey Taylor joined the band there bud. In which Corey Taylor has been since he beginning. They didn’t have an actual vocalist up till Corey joined the band. There drummer did some of the vocals on there first demo but than added Corey after they realized they needed a solid front man. So Basically he had always been there since they became slipknot and like I said Corey Taylor was actually one of the guys who came up with the idea of the masks before they released there first studio album. You are right about one thing though they do change their make up just about every album, a few of them have had the same mask for a long time.

Anders Colsefni was the original singer for the group, in which members were already wearing masks but Anders decided to wrap his face with tape vs a mask. Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat even has Anders singing on it and Corey came in at the end of the recording cycle. Corey even has interviews I which he recalls watching them perform and the act the masks made him say “I’m gonna sing for this band”

hooderaw there are alot of sub genres when it come to rock and metal, but the sub genre that slipknot is happens to fall under metal. Rock can still be heavy, but its not as brutal as metal tends to be.

Hey LayedBak..........I grew up in rock / metal most my entire life. I'm 52 years old and still enjoy it more than any other music. The masks themselves have been with the band since right after they started in the mid 90's.......it's just their look , and people who have followed them for years , want / expect them to look like that. Maybe hard to explain. As far as their music......everyone listens to them for their own reasons. Me?.........1st , it's a way for me to come home after a crappy day , crank it up and release a bunch of inner rage. I'm not kidding. I use their music to help calm me down , and they are awesome at doing it for me. 2nd.......and most people may not realize this , but there are like 9 dudes in that band. Even in concert , they are so well balanced and in tune with each other it's crazy. And when you can get that many people , that " in tune ".....it creates some awesome stuff. Corey Taylor's voice is also something special......like pretty rare. He has a super wide range , which most singers can't do. They all go hand in hand. Here is one last note : I'm white , you're black , and Metal.......never discriminates! We love all colors , boy and girl , big or small , young or old.........Metal brings people together! Please check out some of their other awesome tunes. There is a lot of them , way more hard core than this! Rock on brother!!
