Loving your reviews of these books and have subscribed today. I like the way these volumes are coloured - some of the originals I bought back in the days had really muddy colour reproduction and it's nice to see what's been done on them. Sal's inks over John B are pure artistry - they didn't combine all that often (off the top of my head there are a few Thor issues and a one-off Captain America) and in those early pre-internet days I was so amazed by his ink lines that I believed Sal used only pens - wasn't till I saw the full sized art that I realised he was just simply amazingly good with a brush. No disrespect to the other inkers here - Dan Adkins in particular was a great match with Big John on the Surfer and also Sub Mariner but Sinnott and Stone really overpowered the pencils and smoothed out much of the edginess/action and detail. BTW that "minimalist" reference to Sal's inks on issue 6 was well spotted - it was not intentional, rather a plan that was not completed - the Surfer's colouring changed between issues 3 and 4, less blue shading and more of a stark black and white line which I felt worked well but they planned with issue 6 to experiment with a separate blue plate of line art to indicate reflections in a solid colour so Sal prepared a separate set of inks on a separate piece of board to print out that extra reflectiveness. The intended effect was to give the Surfer a combination of black line art for outlines, eyes etc but the actual silver effect would be drawn as black line art then printed as pure colour to make him look more silvery. However, it was an expensive experiment and when the sales figures for the first batch of issue came in they axed the idea and just ran the art the normal way but without incorporating that additional page of line art which meant the silvery effect in issues 6 and part of 7 were missing and his skin looked less shiny. Similar thing happened when John redesigned Quicksilver's costume for Avengers 75 - the blue areas were originally meant to be silver but colouring proved difficult so they opted for the light blue wash/fill as a next best option.

I didn’t get the Silver Surfer because I have them in masterworks signed by Stan Lee and John Buscema and because the Surfer omnibus feels incomplete without Silver Surfer’s first appearance in Fantastic Four #48, #49, #50.

Those signed Masterworks are definitely books to be treasured!

Thanks for letting me know his first appearance is not in this Omnibus

Do you think the price of those individual comics would drop if they included them in the omnibus ?

Hi Mike - fantastic series and I totally agree - Big John Buscema’s artwork really shines in these pages. I originally read these issues when my Tech Drawing teacher lent them to me back in the 70’s - his Marvel collection was massive and must be worth a fortune today! Great review as always - have the misprinted pages been sorted out in this reprint? I know there were a few errors in the first reprint with pages/panels being left out or repeated out of sequence. It certainly looked ok in your review - looks like another purchase on the way….cheers from Northern Ireland. Drew 😁👍

Wow, yeah I imagine that collection would be pretty valuable if it was kept in good condition!
Yeah the printing errors are all resolved, so all good this time around!

Another good review! Thanks! And yes, _Not Brand Echh_ was definitely an acquired taste, as was, let's be honest, the _Silver Surfer_ book itself given its lack of sales. :-\

The 'savage' Silver Surfer story WAS addressed, though very briefly, in one panel of Sub-Mariner #34, where the Surfer says he's forsworn his vengeance against humanity. I suspect it was for no other reason than they wanted to team him up with the Hulk and Sub-Mariner to fight The Avengers.

Yeah seems like it was a very small token reference to it just to effectively sweep it under the rug and move the character swiftly on

Great review. Wonder why they use such a small font for the creator names on the spine for these new designs. I like the little picture on the spine but good lord, those creator names are way too small.

Yeah it's strange, there's really no reason why they need to be so small

Hi good review, but 2 things you could have mentioned briefly:
1 Marvel’s idiotic decision not to have SS4 as the variant cover (perhaps the greatest comic cover of all time)
2 and some commentary about if they corrected the printing mistake that occurred last year when they first reprinted this omni. I have a copy of the 2020/21 reprint, haven’t read it yet but i hear there’s a printing mistake, in which case i might need to buy another copy.

That would've been a good cover choice! And yeah fair point, that printing error issue was something I'd meant to mention and it slipped my mind - the errors are all resolved now, no other issues with this printing that I've been able to notice checking through it
