I think the basic issue with T Jacob is, he's the only character in the game who's starting passives are actively malicious. Most characters starting toolkit is beneficial in some capacity, and sometimes it has a caveat that balances it out, and technically Jacob is no different. The problem is, the keepers coin health isn't actively hunting him down to kill him.
17:27 Remember when Tainted Esau had his own health bar that automatically brought you to the lost form when he died? Remember how he could be damaged by room tiles such as sacrifice room spikes, spiked rocks, or the moving spike blocks? Remember how he was *like this* for almost a year? That version of the character is why people HATED him on release. Release Tainted Laz also sucked, but I still beat most of his achievements MONTHS before I was able to get a good enough set of runs with Jacob.
Super Big Tip!!! Rib of Greed can restore a shop after already entering it with a Greed in it. Just pick up the trinket and go back into the shop. Walla, it's restored. Items on the ground from the prior fight also remain. I hope this helps for future games~ (Re-engages lurker mode...) -_I'll Be Watching, Friend._
T Jacob is one of the best designed character in the game, tied with forgotten & t keeper in my opinion. He's like the real glass cannon, just enough fragile, but what makes it fragile also makes it ultra powerful. Really a clever design.

I swear When you started questionning yourself I knew you were gonna take that dumb Esau hit And the problem is in fact: If you screw up before the end of the bossfight, your run is basically over. You were about max health at the end but you died by getting hit twice. The early boss killing boost isn't worth the endgame despair

Yea suuure, T Jacob is fun... as much as playing chess with a dog constantly biting your ass. It causes anxiety and forces you to always be on guard, without a single second to take a deep breath and relax, even in rooms without enemies :/

People hate tainted Jacob because dark esau used to be made of tissue paper after like, caves, so every run became a race against becoming a mantle-less Lost before your suicidal idiot brother got himself killed It made those room sweeper brimstone runs *actively dangerous to play* because his health scaling per floor was shit (like 100 or something). Also Anima Sola occasionally just... wouldn't prioritize dark esau, on top of his old charge being able to suddenly switch directions to track you. Oh, and on release, if memory serves, if you became the lost-Jacob then your health would get set to 3 red hearts regardless of what it was prior, meaning health ups were virtually worthless for a bit. Tainted Jacob's fun now, but he had a rough start, especially when compared to every other tainted character (besides tainted Lazarus, who sucked for different reasons at launch).
My personal issue with T Jacob isn't really his fault, but Edmund seems addicted to making you play the lost. Wanna beat mother? Turn into the lost. T Jacob, oops, also the lost. Soul of the Lost, Wanted Posted, we get it. There's ways to make characters interesting, risky plays without *being the Lost* T. Maggy, Keeper and T keeper, it's just... It feels lazy. It could easily do something else to you that has its own upsides and downsides, instead of just being The Lost Again Don't Get Hit Simulator.
I don't know if you played repentance on release or not but girl it was kind of a disaster Tainted lazarus and tainted jacob were absolutely insufferable on release, like, insanely bad and hard and tedious to play, note to say there were plenty bugs that didn't help I'm really proud to say I fully completed tainted lost and lazarus on their release version because those two were really something Right now with all the reworks and buffs they're fair and fun to play, but some of us still remember the fear those names would've caused to many

Once i got all of them i had basically infinite items and infinite runs but after third r key i was too tired to go on. Anyway id like to see what magic you could perform with all of them spirits

i never even tried to do anything before the tainted esau update because i was expecting there would be some changes as it was in an horrible state
lets not forget how most of these mods make the game easier so they make t.jacob even less horrible
For real man, Esau killed himself offscreen in later floors and was basically like playing no mantle lost.
