This sends a message to anyone considering being a teacher to choose another profession. EVERYONE has the right to quit their job: doctors, lawyers, tech workers. But Gov Greg Abbott is saying that in Texas teachers are the only professionals who do not have this right. OKAY young people - is this really a career that you want? NOPE!

I’m a retired teacher and I love teaching. However the working conditions have been deteriorating since the early 2000’s at least. COVID-19, remote teaching, hybrid teaching and whatever else cáame from it or came along in roughly the same time period made things go from bad (but I can still handle it) to worst (this is impossible. Trying to do it all is affecting my mental health, my physical health, my emotional health, my family, my social life and more. So for my own well being I must get out NOW. I can’t wait until the end of the school year to quit.)
At this point I would not recommend going into teaching to anyone. It is not worth it.
Gov. Abbott, or more specifically, The State Board of Educator Certification, absolutely can suspend temporarily or revoke permanently a teacher’s certification. Why? Because teachers are contract employees. Teachers sign a contract. In that contract it says that the school cannot fire a teacher in the middle of the school year unless the teacher has done something very bad, usually illegal. If a teacher is caught having a “romance” with a student, if the teacher is guilty of statutory rape, or is molesting a student, or hits a student, or has/uses/buys/or sells illegal drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes on school property, if the teacher has a gun on school property even if it’s in her car and it’s not hers, if a
teacher steals expensive things, etc then the school can fire the teacher mid-year. Otherwise if they don’t want that teacher back next year they can non-renew the contract at the end of the school year but there are limits on that and they must follow procedures.
The contract states that by signing the contract, the teacher cannot quit their job until their contract ends, usually at the end of the school year. End of contract term resignations usually happen in March or April. A teacher must submit her resignation by a deadline and must continue to work for the rest of her contract term. The contract states that any teacher who quits in the middle of the school year can have their teacher’s certificate suspended for at least one year. That puts a black mark on the teacher’s record and it can make it harder for that teacher to find teacher jobs in the future.
School districts can be reluctant to hire someone who has previously broken a contract because they’re considered to be a risk. If they broke a contract before they may very well break a contract with this district also.
A teacher can go before the school board and ask to be released from her contract if she has a compelling reason why she has to quit now and cannot wait until the end of the school year. That might be for health reasons, a recently disabled child who needs her care, having to move because the spouse got a job in or was transferred to a location where it’s too far for her to commute among other things. It is up to the school board whether they release her from her contract or not. Even if they do release her from her contract it can still put a black mark on her record although it’s not as serious as quitting without being released from the contract. If the school board decides not to release her from her contract then she has two choices. She can work the rest of her contract term until the end of the school year and quit then. Or she can quit in the middle of the school year without the school board releasing her from her contract but she runs the risk of having the black mark on her record and having a hard time getting hired to be a teacher in the future.
So, yes, a teacher can have her teaching certificate temporarily suspended or permanently revoked for resigning during the school year. A contract is a legal promise. When you sign it you’re making a promise to work until the end of your contract term and there are negative consequences for breaking a contract.

There are 308,000+ vacant teacher positions in the nation right now. We can leave as we see fit and many aren't even bothering to return to the profession. Subs are at an all-time low, as are graduates from Teachers programs. This pandemic only highlighted the issues we were already having in our classrooms. Teachers have been telling the districts that these issues are a problem, but we have been ignored. The districts keep thinking that adding more to the work load is going to fix it. It won't! They think adding more testing will fix it. It won't! They think that adding extra hours to the day or days to the year will fix it. It won't! It will just drive good teachers out of the classrooms. We don't need more tasks to complete. We barely have the time to complete them now. I refuse to take the work home, and if it doesn't get done in the hours they pay me for, then they can fire me! And if I have so much redundant paperwork to fill out, then I won't have the time to plan a decent lesson, communicate with parents, or communicate with my colleagues. But I know plenty of teachers who take that work home and don't have time for their own families. That is ridiculous, and shouldn't be expected! We shouldn't be told, "Do it for the kids!" The districts take advantage of this and assume we will all do it. We won't. I am glad teachers are quitting, because then MAYBE districts will finally listen to our concerns. We need more funding, so that we can actually have the correct staff members that each school needs to be productive, and to make sure each kid can have the help they need to succeed. We need parents to teach their kids to be respectful to teachers again! We need principals to send those kids home, rather than asking other teachers to "take care of the problem child". If the parents do not have to deal with the mess they created, then it will never change. We need teachers to be paid what they are worth for having a degreed career. We need people to trust our decisions, when it comes to knowing the child's learning strengths/weaknesses, rather than someone always micromanaging or arguing about the recommendations. Teachers know what we need. Administrations/parents need to support those needs, or they will be left with robots who are "teaching" their kids!

They DO know that if THEY are the party putting my charges in danger or preventing their education, it's THEIR ASSES on the chopping block, yes? And to protect kids, many of us will never even think about going through the courts. What would be the point? We would teach them to put students first through fear. Just plain fear. Don't think I'm reasonable? What part of the system as it exists now is MORE reasonable than my approach? If the responsibility and basic decency aren't strong enough motivators, I am just fine with straight-up fear. Some jobs are simply too important to make room for failure or incompetence.

Blame the teachers???!!! Don’t you think there’s a REASON they’re quitting? Nobody quits a job because of great work culture, administrative and colleague support, inspiring work, reasonable workload, pay that enables one to live on par with other professionals in the community, achieve a work/life balance, and in the teaching field, have the cooperation and involvement of parents and students. Happy and healthy teachers do not quit except in cases of necessity like physical incapacity or a relocation having higher priority, ie. The teacher falls ill with terminal disease, a spouse in the military is transferred, or elderly parents require live-in or nearby assistance.
Instead, when teachers quit, there’s a toxic work environment, no support or even opposition of administration and colleagues, micromanaged work, unreasonable or impossible workload so that work/life balance is not possible, insufficient pay significantly below the level of other professionals in the community so that it is necessary to work one or more second jobs, and the disdain and blame for everything wrong in education on the part of the parents and students. Teachers coping with such conditions often resign because their mental and physical health is in jeopardy. Some even tough it out until their health fails.
To further punish such teachers BY DEPRIVING THEM OF THEIR SOURCE OF LIVELIHOOD IS REPREHENSIBLE AND EVIL.
Instead, the powers that be from school boards, administration, county, state, on up to federal officials need to get together with teachers, parents, educational support personnel like psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, social workers, clergy, and even students to fix the problem. Call in educators from countries with public educational systems that work. Be open to critique and be willing to change. The current system is broken. It needs changing, and FAST!
If conditions don’t change, we look forward to a future of failure.

The multi-billion dollar question should be “why are teachers leaving by the thousands?!?” They are treated with no dignity/respect, zero support for discipline problems and either zero raises or significantly “lower than inflation” raises which means they get poorer by the year!!! The school districts are just fine with the teacher shortages, the position stays unfilled and doubles class sizes for other teachers, which saves the district money or they fill the position with a low paid substitute which saves them money!!! They have to act bothered by it all, but it’s an act. Doubling class sizes overworks the remaining teachers so they will be quitting in 1-2 years......then what? Texas?!? The education system is collapsing! Teachers with integrity will retire or quit and you’re left with unqualified educators! Where does that get you?!? Your lack of raises along with Biden’s massive inflation not only cheats teachers out of regular pay, but cheats them out of retirement money that is based on income when they retire!!!

Put money into building maintenance. Stop administrative abuse of office so that administrators aren't allowed to abuse teacher evaluations as punitive tools. Pay teachers more. Stop adding more responsibilities without ever once reducing teacher workloads. Stop cramming students into our classes and asking teachers to give up their prep times to cover for absent colleagues.
