Thanks to you i found Unigine and started making Tutorials for it! Im about to release a Devlog soon on a game im thinking about but its really thanks to you showing 2.15 back 2 years ago that im here right now and glad to see you go through it again!
I've been messing around in Unigine for the last few months and it is a beautiful engine. It is missing a few important pieces under the hood currently, but the devs seem quite focused, which is a nice change from Unity. Haven't decided yet if I'll switch over completely for my main project, but it is tempting!
@@MaxIzrin Right. So far I'm not dealing with it. I'm dealing with other things in the hopes that once I start to deal with UI there will be a better workflow. We'll see. But even in Unity UI has got to be one of the worst aspects of game design. It might be better NOT to have a UI Editor if it's so convoluted to use and code like Unity's UI system.
The only reason I didn't go with Unigine is the lack of a robust character animation system (they don't even have IK until now). It's great to see they're working on that.
I don’t think they’ll be able to gain a large user base until they modify their licensing a bit more. They’ve locked some of their best features behind “contact us” which means you probably can’t afford it anyways lol. Them providing some of those features to the lower tier licenses wouldn’t take away from their big sim licensors either, because they need all the bells and whistles and won’t be able to bother with the free tier anyways.
What features do you feel you need from those licenses? I only really recall things like GIS integration and built-in Sim stuff meant for their engineering/defence/energy sector business
One of the unsung hero's of Unigines technology is its sound. To get a good idea of how it sounds, put on a pair of headphones and check out Ostap Gordon's Half-Life 2 Apartments recreation. If Unigine were open source under a permissive license, I would almost IMMEDIATELY switch my game to it, due to my games use of sound and sound processing.
Unigine has actually been around for quite some time and I think the biggest reason it has flown under the radar as a game engine was because that wasn't their target audience. They were essentially a beefier version of the Cry engine targetted towards scientific, architectural, engineering and aviation simulations and as such required inaccessibly high end hardware to run. They touted a rather strong leaning towards physics simulations. I think that is why so many of their sample projects wound up becoming benchmarks on modern graphics cards is because those cards have caught up to what was once out of reach then. It wasn't until fairly recently they started dipping their toes in potential use for gaming as Unreal began broadening their use scope and therefore threatening to encroach upon their niche.
UNIGINE is quite popular, but in the specific area of simulators and training soft. Many projects for industrial companies and the defense industry are simply not available to the public.
@@3KLANGMUSIC Engine is older than you think. Not made for gamers, made for rich nerds in labcoats with deep pockets. Good at doing nerd stuff. Now they are trying to sell to gamers because their competitor is trying to take away their nerds.
Unigine is just slightly worse than UE in terms of graphics, but a whole lot better performance and stability wise. It also got both C++ and C# scripting. If they were source-available, like Unreal, that would make Unreal obsolete to me personally. But for now, after the Unity incident, unavailable source and no guarantee against retroactive license changes became quite big issues, that make me hesitant to jump into the engine.
Always nice to have another good looking engine around that supports C#. If Unigine had a converter, possibly AI powered, for Unity or other projects it might be an option to try out. As it stands it's just a nice feature list, but not convincing enough to switch. (Converters are hard, but even a single ported project might help to compare it with the competition.)
Unigine is company founded in Russia, in small town in Siberia(500k people). It's a very smalll team. They have super small budget(in comparison to Unity, Unreal, or even Godot). So it's unlikely they will build it more acceptable
The only reason I don't switch to Unigine is the lack of a UI editor. UI needs to be created from script, and the API is a mess. They have their own XML style format, and UI can be created from file that way, which is better but it's not HTML, so... good luck.
Good graphics won't help if there's not enough tooling to make a game. Since they're not focusing on making games, but improving the visuals only, it will be difficult to make a complex game using this engine.
jeez this looks incredible good! is it worth it to have a look at it as someone who does "free to play" games? (real F2P, no in game shop or something)
Unigine suffers from the same issue most unpopular engines do, poor documentation. Expect to be reading plenty of generated docs, its really not that great. the engine is amazing, but you have to decode every minor feature yourself
How good is this engine for procedural terrain generation? I mean it in a voxel context and in a no man's sky style of terrain generation. Also random dungeon generation would be interesting to me too.
unigine can pull of sunny days better than unreal from what ı see unreal al ways has overcast lighting not realy realistic if you do not have rtx. and has problem with saturation from what ı seen every game has bland brownish grayish color pallete when it looks diffrent in other engines.
I'm not gonna lie. A Russian developer putting a "free complete fpv drone simulator" into the engine when fpv drones are the most effective weapon for both sides of the war in Ukraine is simultaneously brilliant and disgusting. 100% their download numbers are going up this year. The demo video even seems like it's a highlight real for how good the demo would work to train the things drone pilots need to know if you look at with that in mind.
@@cyberpunkdenton9497 Deep Rock Galactic , Fortnite, Gears of War... There are a lot games made with the best game engine of the world (Unreal Engine).
I think they may have come late to the party. As much as Unity has done some horrible stuff, I can't dismiss how much their asset store has helped me, and will continue to help me. I've only released two games, but without Unity, that number would be zero. It seems that Unigen has just barely shown up to the party and they have a lot of catching up to do.

The company needs to make a game with this engine, best way to popularize and to find issues with the engine itself.
