That's a really good question in the title of the video. I started playing with my fingers and I can no longer and do not want to play with a pick. Great demos, amazing playing, thanks.
Learning this along with Mark's way of finger picking, which he showed in an interview how to do it, will get you a long way in terms of achieving that classic sound of his.
@@stevecarereguitar one quick q, which version of Sultans is your example clip from, with the French TV watermark and the credits rolling over? Don't think I've seen it, but the tone is *nuts*
I swear I can't be more thankful. I have been wondering this for months and thanks god you also realized. Great video. congrats. By the way. The eye of the tiger cut was very funny 🤣. keep it up
Of course! One of my favorites. That’s why I mentioned him in the video. I know I’ve heard him do something similar but can’t find any footage. Can you point out a video? I would love to check it out.
@@joaoamadosvz Good point! I need to look more into the timeline. I always thought Mark got it from Chet Atkins or another more country leaning player. Thanks for the comment!
Good to see Knopfler getting some love from modern players. The guy is a genius.
Knopfler is an all time great! Thanks for the comment

As close as any of us mortals can get! He is just such a unique player. Very hard to really dial in his technique. Thanks you for tuning in!
I like how well you explain the actual technique. Never thought of it in this way... thanks a lot!
Thanks for watching Ulliel! Really glad you got something out of it. Cheers
*Brilliant* video, man - great examples and demos, amazing playing, and completely lacking in filler. Easy instant subscribe.
Cheers Sam! Thanks for the sub

It's a good one!
That is honestly rather epic
It's ripe for the picking! Great little lick
Super video and playing Steve - could you break down us some of your fast fingerstyle licks [mainly pentatonic based] in a separate video?
Hey Philip, thanks for watching! I might just do that in a future video. Thanks again!
Should’ve almost included sultans of swing alchemy live😅
I abandoned picks back in 2010 and have never used one since.
Yea, I couldn't ever fully give it up as it has a tone you just can't replicate. But being totally comfortable without one is a skill worth pursuing!
Great video, you explained the techniques very well
Thanks Hobbs! Much appreciated

Mam that ending improve sounded like knopfler himself that was uncanny
Wow, thanks so much for the compliment! Really appreciate it.
Great tutorial!
Cheers! Thanks for checking it out
very cool technique man.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching
Love it
Glad you like it Nick!
Fantastic,,,, u play it only on one string?
That's right! Muting on one string at a time and "alternate picking" with your fingers is the key.
Fab!
Thank you!
Listen to sultans of swing alchemy live at 5:05
Oh wow! Wish I knew about that one to include in the video. That's a cheeky little run
Have you ever heard of Jeff Beck! He is THE master of this technique. Where do think Mark first heard it?
Of course! One of my favorites. That’s why I mentioned him in the video. I know I’ve heard him do something similar but can’t find any footage. Can you point out a video? I would love to check it out.
Mark came first. At this time Jeff used to use a pick.
