If you are short on funds because you’ve spent all your money on pens, paper and ink and can’t afford a leather single pen case, those little glasses cases that come with reading glasses also work.
YES! on the ballpoint/'regular' pen. Q: "Do you have a pen I can borrow?" A#1 - If I know them, I'll ask if they use fountain pens. If they do, they can use a precious I have with me. If they don't, they get the regular pen. A#2: If I don't know them, they automatically get the regular pen, unless I'm at a pen club/show with other fountain pen people, then I'll consider on a one to one basis.
As someone new to fountain pens, I have gotten addicted almost immediately. Today as I was filling a brand new pen, with a number 6 nib....into a smallish Pelikan bottle, I noticed I had to rest the nib lightly to the bottom of the bottle, before it would reach the pickup hole.. I wondered what I would do once this bottle got a little lower...and to All my wonder, I clicked on this video and first off saw the Ink Miser!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Exactly what I needed. Thank you so much, without watching this video, I would never have known that this existed !!!!! That deserves a "Subscribe" IMO......Thank you so much.....
Great video Tom and some really great advice, thank you. I think it would be beneficial to mention ordinary pipe cleaners as a great cleaning accessory as well. They are especially useful when cleaning, and drying out converters. Best regards.
I have a few decoys! One is a Uni Jetstream (that I genuinely enjoy writing with) and is my go-to ballpoint pen. The other is a Pilot G2. If I feel like someone is moderately trustworthy (like I know them, but I don't know how they'll treat a fountain pen), I'll often hand over my Platinum Preppy.
I always buy a package of 10 BIC or Papermate pens at the 99 Cents store and toss three or four of them in my backpack. Once in a while I also watch to see if the borrowed pen is returned. Success rate is poor!
HAHA Tom - LOVED your intro. It's really the same as MINE LOL. I truly AM a fountain pen addict. All my friends know. I've gone deeply into the rabbit hole. And YES, I ALWAYS have a rollerball for loaning out :) Happy writing
True to Pilot, they make the best cheap plastic ballpoints. Before I realized I could use fountain pens for every day writing I would go out of my way to find their stick ballpoints in fine point.
Yeah... the priceless view of huiliation of my collegues - when they see me writing with my nice fountain pens - and when they ask me, they get my LAMY Safari... 😉
HI! I have a Sailor Imperial Black with a plated nib. Do you think ammonia-based solutions, like the Monteverde fountain pen flush, can cause plating to strip? Thank you.
You are the only person online that I’ve found so far anywhere that even mentions cleaning the actual body of a fountain pen. I have a vast collection of pens over 50 years and I’m sometimes afraid of how to clean the body and cap of a pen because there’s so many chemicals that will harm the finish. I’ve always used just soap and water and letting it dry thoroughly and polished with a jeweler’s cloth. I’ve heard that a slight amount of Carnauba wax can bring out its luster, but wanted to ask, is if that’s a good policy?
Thanks for your comment. I think soap and water with a microfiber cloth is a good general rule for pen body cleaning. Now, when it comes to using wax or micro abrasive polish, one must take great caution. I would sample a little of polish in a spot of the pen to test how the material looks after the application. If it gives the desired effect of removing the micro-scratches and scuffs, then by all means, bring out that luster!
I like the capless fountain pens much better, even tho they cost a lot more I found them easier to use then the ones you shown in here. I have been using a fountain pen for 14 months and the capless fountain pens for 8 months so I much rather use the capless fountain pens

If i had a parker jotter ballpoint pen, i wouldn't make it a decoy pen, i'd use that for when i needed to use a ballpoint pen. For lending, I'd buy a cheaper ballpoint pen by the dozen.
I’m from Baltimore. I’m sure all the other Baltimore pen lovers have this. I’ve avoided it because CRABS AGAIN! (If you don’t know, crabs and Baltimore are a “thing” and have been forever.)
A thousand times NO on the last comment of keeping a ballpoint for other people to use. How do we expect to expand the hobby if people are unwilling to let people use fountain pens. Shame! Buy a pack of Varsity disposables for people to borrow or steal. $20 for a pack of 7. They're 100% reliable and bulletproof. We either expand the hobby or die.
I would only loan out a ballpoint. This is not negative about my friends but unless they have experience, the result will be a disaster for the pen and/or their attempt to use it. Also could embarrass them when they try to use it. That would be like loaning my Nikon to someone who has only used an iPhone.
I do agree. I think Goldspot does an outstanding job with their videos, however, side shots have irritated me ever since I first saw them; not just here, but on any channel, tv show, or news broadcast. interviews.
Decoy pen has to be the best accessory

I'm dying over the decoy pen😂... It still looks clean too

I'm glad it helped, Sonny!
I just purchased the Ink Miser. Don't know there was a pipette in the box until your video! Thanks! 😂

Yes, great point! I do love using a straw-cleaning brush to remove ink from cap and/or barrel threads.

Hey, I like that one. I'm gonna use it. Thanks.
Thanks for the information. 🧡
Excellent informative presenttion. Thank you.

Funny how monteverde made that ink flush, since it's the monteverde pens that are the most prone to drying and skipping.

reminded me that local Pilot distributor gives away 1 very cheap ballpoint on purchases over $10. that's a decoy 😂

Useful
Parker Jotter is indispensable. I will never hear again ‘oh, sorry…’.

I’ve wondered which would be more useful, the Peinider or the TWSBI portable ink bottles.

Vídeo muito bom. Apenas uma observação: o amigo fala muito com as mãos. Esse excesso de gestos acabam nos distraindo um pouco. Regards !
I can't help it. I am of Mediterranean descent and talk with my hands. I'm sorry it is distracting. -Tom

The video as discussed on the podcast!

I like the approach of having a pack of Pilot Varsity fountain pens to hand out.
Buy what you need, not what you think you will need. This video is why collectors have drawers of pen-related junk.

Someone will still pinch the parker pen lol
Carbon. Copy. Forms. The doors of Time creak open... wind your watches before proceeding to Blockbuster to rent your next video...
In my opinion, if you never knew you needed something, chances are you don't need it.
I keep a Bic cristal ball pen with me 😅
3:36 that is…grossly insensitive to people who actually struggle with chemical dependencies. Not cool.
Why? Why? Why? you continue doing these side shots. They are disturbing. stick to pens forget artistic shots.
