Wildfires are intensifying in California - but “wild”fires might be a misnomer at this point, because humans are responsible for why they’ve gotten so out of control. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that 84 percent of fires are started by humans. The Carr fire in northern California, for example, was sparked by the rim of car with a flat tire.
If you look at where California’s population is growing and getting denser, you’ll see that more and more people are building in areas that are at risk, increasing the potential for costly destruction - 2017 was the most expensive year on record, topping $10 billion in damages.
Since we drastically exacerbated this problem, can we swing it back the other way? The impact of man-made climate change is unlikely to reverse. And people continue to build in dangerous areas, with no sign of stopping. By 2050, there could be over 640,000 new homes built in the path of wildfires.
Here’s the research paper explaining how humans start most fires: www.pnas.org/content/114/11/29...
And here is the data on humans expanding into wildfire territory:

The only way for California fires to stop is to burn down more trees not stop them. If trees begin to burn due to a spark like the Carr fire, it's likely that the cause of it is due to large amounts of volatile oil producing trees or pyrophytic trees in the region like pine trees and eucalyptus trees. Pyrophytic trees encourage the initiation of bushfires by producing these oils so that they can propagate their seeds around. Its how they have adapted to thrive and populate. The best way to fight against these fires is by conducting regular controlled burnings of tree dense regions to 1. lessen the volatile oil residue and 2. burn off branches and dry materials that can fuel the fire going. Controlled fires have already been shown to be an effective way of combating fires in Victoria Australia, British Columbia Canada and many other tree dense locations. This is known as controlled fires and prescribed burning respectively in Australia and Canada. If fires can be easily caused by a mere few sparks, educating people about 'being mindful of how we spark fires isn't going to help' because accidents happen. The best thing to do is to combat the problem first before it becomes problematic.

California is now free cremation state if you want to die just move to the fire zones and it will be done. I don't feel sorry for people who want to stay in harms way so the wise have left 6 million in the last 4 years so hats off to them California is going to burn for years to come and we can't afford 90,000 firemen and rescue and water 25,000 water trucks ready that would eat all the bonus money up so you are almost 100% guaranteed to burn lives are more important than property the sheriff's already said that he doesn't want to cut into his budget and get a thousand to 5,000 more police officers to help you oh no can't do that that cost too much money and you won't get a good bonus and his budget will be overblown oh no the government can print as much money as it wants but you're not important believe me we print money for stuff that we don't need all the time weapons military we've spent all kinds of money on that that we don't have but when it comes to your house burn it up too dang bad don't have it know who to vote for next time better vote for someone that really cares about hiring 50 to 60 thousand people to help you guys move in case of a fire and have water tanks ready if I was governor that would all change no matter what the budget is I would blow it all to save you all are even if people have to work for free that will be done and by the way the sheriff also said he has no plan that can help you in a major chaos like this one it's happening now because he doesn't want to hire more tanker trucks own are we our resources are all stretched because we got to look at my bonuses at the end the year oh no can't pay you know time to revamp California the most richest state the average house for the United States is $261000 the average in California is $461000 they have the money but they don't want to share with you so good luck and take a hike like I would like smart people did

Everyone talks about California getting wildfires, (which is all fine), but no one seems to be talking about Oregon and Washington getting wildfires it seems.
In most years, OR and WA have seen far larger and worse fires than California relative to the size of their states (although with much less destroyed housing and property by far). Based on historic burn maps of the U.S., the most heavily burned regions are located in the Pacific Northwest. It's sad to see all our beautiful forests and mountains on fire-especially as an avid hiker, myself. A history of wildfire suppression, intense/unrestrained logging leading to dense re-growth in past years, and climate change (causing lower spring snowpacks and drier summers) have all made fires worse in Oregon and Washington. We need to do more controlled burns, halt ALL logging on public lands, fight climate change, and designate more protected land to to save our last remaining old growth trees that are more resistant to wildfires.

My father's SUV started a forest fire when a malfunctioning catalytic converter sent literal fireballs out of the exhaust. Fortunately, he was a couple miles from a Forest Service fire station and raced over there to inform them. They knocked out the fire before it got too big, only scorching a few acres. His auto insurance company paid the fire fighting costs, about $25,000. This happened in the early 90's.

There's a subtle problem with this (something I learned more about when I went to Smokey The Bear Museum in Capitan NM recently): some forest fires are better for the forest than others. If regular brush fires are allowed and don't spark crown fires, then the areas underneath the older growth trees will be cleared more regularly.
True, population moving into these areas makes this worse, as *allowing* a smaller fire might be politically untenable, but the really bad huge crown fires can be prevented and regular underbrush can be cleared without harming old growth trees. Maybe pass legislation that if you're in a moderately high fire area, then small brush fires can be allowed up to maybe 200' of your property and that property owners would be responsible for clearing underbrush on the remaining area closer to the house.
Also, I'm just a RUclips comment, what do I know?

in the past there used to be more controlled burns to prevent this sort of thing from happening.but due to a politician making it illegal to control burn and cutting funding from fire management to the point the fire fighters can only put out fires instead of prevent them.add on top of that a ton of very cheaply made houses and you've got recipe for one small spark from anything can cause a massive wild fire.
a very small spark from a bbq or lightening bolt could easily cause these fires cause of how fire prone california is.

My Thoughts you obviously don’t know what it actually is... And most scientists never said that the planet would be underwater by now, only some more alarmist people said that. Right now the sea level is increasing by 1 Centimeter each year, which is not much, but over time (like 100 years, it will add up.
And also, there’s no denying that the Arctic is melting, so much so that they’re already having some cargo ships go through the northwest passage (a route through the north of Canada which is projected to be be Ice free by 2050). And also Russia is already planning some military bases in the artctic in the future to secure their claims for oil there (once the ice melts, it will be much easier to access the oil there.)
The only thing conservatives actually argue about is if it’s natural, or caused by humans (which it definitely is caused by humans, since from just 1970 to now, the arctic ice sheet has shrunk so much in a short period of time geologically)

Sensei Adam Look into the Geoengineering of the planet and weather manipulation. Before climate change can be discussed at any level, this must be considered. The fires all across the west are no accident. Homes with tile roofs don't completely turn into dust. Fires cannot burn that hot in open air where oxygen is the fuel. This is why bodies won't burn to ash unless in an oxygen starved furnace.

This is what happens when you have unfairly the most electoral votes in America. Too add a lot of Californias economy are supported by rich foreigners living in your state not to mention the free federal dollars from the USA census data. California includes all of the illegals inflating the numbers to get even more federal $$$$-suppose to include Americans only...$now California will get our money for your fires even if you have insurance. Again you can thanks rest of America for our money. By the way 3 cities filed bankruptcy this year in California and even your state has considered that. California came in dead last for quality of life standards too. Facts..

As a professinal Arborist with two Forestry degrees, I have to say on top of the USFS suppression policies, Enviornmentalists have stopped logging in states like CA to save animals like the spotted owl. With droughts, trees are “stressed” meaning they don’t have all the resources to defend from insects and pathogens. Invasive insects have pillaged much of the west turning more trees into tinder. Coupled with the Santa Ana winds, this is a recepie for a blaze. We must have some way of clearing the forest floor.
Many tree species out there require low intensity fires for seed dispersal. The problem is these high intensity fires burn the minerals right out of the soil, limiting the chance for things to grow if anything survives the blaze.
So the problem is us, however it is not going to be solved by people being less negligent. It can only be solved by people who realize the environment is incredibly complex and there is no “solution” in the truest sense of the term, rather a series of more or less desirable outcomes. This video is an oversimplified to a fault. This is a miltivariate problem and their proposed solution is to stop moving into woodlands?

I live in southern Oregon and currently have two 50K-acre fires within about 15 miles from my front door. These two fires are a couple days away from joining together. These were started by a lightning storm we had in mid-July. Vox has negated to mention one of the really big reasons these fires are getting so big -- FOREST DENSITY. Forests are getting so dense that it makes it virtually impossible to get to fires to put them out. Also, this makes fires burn hotter and move much more quickly.
Ever since logging here was severely crippled in the early 2000's, large forest fires have become more and more frequent. We've had choking smoke from surrounding fires every single summer since 2011. I've lived here all but 5 years of my life, and it was never this bad up until a few years after logging was cut back. Bringing logging back to the area would greatly reduce the sheer size of these fires.

  • @ironic_iron8770
    @ironic_iron8770 5 лет назад

The air and ashfall are also factors with these fires we've been having. In areas like Sacramento where I live, the wind blows the ash and smoke into the valley and makes it less desirable to go outside.

It's important to buy a home next to fire hydrants and with multiple different routes leading down the mountain. Both my next door neighbors homes have burnt to the ground in the last 15 years. I have a fire hydrant in my backyard and front which has allowed for water to be sprayed on my roof from 2 opposite directions saving my house both these times. Once the fire made it to bushes 4 ft at most from my bedroom. I notice my house is sadly in the red zone for fire risk, but at least I have two roads to choose for my escape.

The real cause of major forest fires is the result of shutting down the lumber mills in the 80's and 90's. Before the mills were shut down, we still had forest fires but these were much less acreage than the huge acreage fires we see today. It use to be less than 100,000 acres when the mills were harvest and cleaning forest grounds. Today because the mills have been gone over 15 years, the forest fires rage from 100,000 to 500,000 or more. The environmentalist forced laws to protect the spotted owls which forced the mills the shut down. Today, more thousands of spotted owls and other animals die from the huge devastating fires. We need to manage the forest like we did when the mills operated. This is a slap on the face to all of us for voting these stringent laws against the lumber mill industry. People will still cause accidents in the forest when camping or bbq-ing but the fires would be less than the 500,000 acre fires we see today and will continue.
