  • This is a short, six minute documentary of the launch of the Pinky Schooner Ardelle at Essex, MA. July 9, 2011. Produced by Len Burgess for the Essex Shipbuilding Museum.The opening music features three players from the North Shore Celtic music scene: Steve Levy on banjo, David de la Barre on whistle and Linda Shields Swicker on guitar playing a set of Irish reels. The Waterfront Park String Band as well as Daisy Nell and Cap't Stan with the Crab Grass Band entertain the crowds after the launch. The day's play-by-play MC was Barry O'Brien. Included in the documentary are 3 great points of view of the actual launch courtesy of Kirk Williamson and GateHouse Media.

    Quite a process. The "side support" car that supported the listing-to-starboard hull as it slid down the ways was just part of a dramatic, and successful launch. The bowsprit looked like it cleared that piling to port by at least a couple of at most 3 feet.

    I really would have loved to see the building of this boat. Pinky schooner Tiger is longer then Ardelle, but somehow looks like she has less room, on deck and below. I understand Ardelle is 58 feet long, but with her high freeboard and spacious beam, she looks larger. I bet she's a joy to sail. I wonder how she would do in rough seas?

    Can't believe how deep that hull and keel are....will they use rocks as ballast? The launch made my jaw drop, until I saw in the view from the 2nd camera how it was launched on one side...amazing!

    How long do wooden hulls last?

    • @meadmaker4525
      @meadmaker4525 2 года назад +2

      Like any boat, as long as you take care of them. There are wooden boats still afloat that are well over 100 years old. Some of their longevity also comes from how they were built to begin with. If it's a quality build and a tight boat, it'll literally last forever, as long as someone keeps maintaining it.

    Nice boat but launch was a fiasco - lucky she didn't roll.

    • @OldWhitebelly
      @OldWhitebelly 5 лет назад +4

      That's a traditional launch, and how ships have been launched from that location for centuries. A second slipway is built parallel to the one under the keel, and the bilge is leaned over onto it, then it is released into the water. It lets them launch into a much smaller and shallower channel and from a steeper bank as well. Essex is actually famous for sideways launches.

    • @hootowl6354
      @hootowl6354 5 лет назад

      Never near rolling. An unloaded hull like floats like a cork.
      I'm wondering though, why not rest the boat on a carrier unit, so there's no rubbing of the hull going in?

    I was finished with this video once the gold fringed, unconstitutional, and illegally mutated Jolly Roger was displayed. 1:40

    • @OldWhitebelly
      @OldWhitebelly 5 лет назад +6

      Yer hangin' yer hat on the wrong hook, son. The fringe is outside of the field of the flag, and is therefore a decoration near by, and not a modification of the design. In fact, the fringe has never been called for, forbidden, or even mentioned in any Act of Congress, Executive Order, or Law. All those stories about how it represents Admiralty or Martial law are bunk. It cannot be "illegal" or "unconstitutional" in any possible definition of those words. There are more than enough problems in the world worth being angry about that you don't need to be upset over a problem that doesn't even exist outside the minds of conspiracy theorists and liars, so you're now free to enjoy the entire video documenting the launch of the lovely boat.

    why always the irritating Celtic music

    • @984francis
      @984francis 6 лет назад +3

      Truly. I loath folksy stuff because it's fake. Such society with it's toughness and hardships and true community of which such music is an intrinsic and essential part no longer exists. People talk about community but with a very few exceptions its bollocks. I find the modern take on folk music shallow and disrespectful. I'm also an old fart but there it is.

    • @DavidOfWhitehills
      @DavidOfWhitehills 6 лет назад +1

      Most publicly performed music is irritating. Bonding community music requires commitment from a high percentage of the community. Community only really reveals itself in the face of adversity.
      Google " Soweto Choir " for illustration.

      It's a pity you don't have something you can enjoy from your history. This is music of the ordinary people not the high faluting'.

      Hmm. Not sure who you are responding too, but I can't find any sense in that the respondents here don't have anything they can enjoy from history. I am very interested in history and take great pleasure in it. My comment speaks to how we play at community these days.
