  • Set to music by Jean-Baptiste Lully and written by the famous French playwright Molière, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme gives a comical look at social climbing. Monsieur Jourdain, a French nouveau-riche of humble origins, is desperately trying to become a genuine member of the nobility. Jourdain recruits tutors who take advantage of his uneducated and uncultured understanding of art and science. He gains a noble friend, Count Duranté, who continually gives him money. And although he has a wife (also of humble origins), he attempts to romantically pursue a marquise for her social status. Monsieur Jourdain's daughter, Lucile, loves a man named Clèonte, but he does not allow the marriage because Clèonte, who disdains social ambition, does not consider himself a gentleman. With the help of his servant, several elaborate turk costumes, and a ridiculous ploy, Clèonte tricks Jourdain and allows him to marry Lucile. And, at the end of the play, Monsieur Jourdain has even not yet realized that he has been deceived.
