Unknown Soldier : A Short Summary
The singer (Soldier) is asking a girl how to make and how to love (He obviously hasn't had love before).. So, when he says So I can leave this world, tonight, and So I can leave this world, behind, he is going out to war and going to die.. Then when he says, Breath the breath of life, after they make love, he is hoping that the girl has a kid after he dies because he doesn't want to die without any descendants..

I see it the same way you do but with one addition. The soldier has borderline personality disorder and is worth nothing (he's an unknown soldier, no one knows who he is) except to his lover.

A soldier who fights and doesn't mind the violence. He doesn't know what he's fighting for, but finds purpose in his squad. The enemy attacks. He puts the thoughts away that these are people who he doesn't find evil, just enemy soldiers that don't really understand their purpose, just like him, so that he can leave the world of emotions behind and do what he needs to do.
Then he's wounded. He begins to give into his wound, but gains renewed determination when his mates lives are threatened as well. He tells them all to leave and stays behind. He holds onto his life as tight as he can, and continues to breath so that he can hold the enemy back as long as possible.
Shortly after, as he lays still with his wound and fears death, he reminds himself that he will only feel this once. That it's just his body yet his soul is eternal. He also reminds himself, with his dying thoughts, not to hate the enemy that did this to him as they are no different than he- just a weapon serving blindly in someone elses battle.
This is the story the song tells. Not the story of an American soldier, but a generic one, fighting in a war that he doesn't understand because he can take the violence and has no other purpose.
That's the way I see it to but "borderline, dead inside" and "breathe the breath of life so I can leave this world behind" reveal the soldier has Borderline Personality Disorder and that he is hoping his lover has a child because he doesn't want to be forgotten. Just some additions, you're right about the rest.
George Kromidas I disagree, the lyrics have all been pretty much literal. They reach the borderline of a different country and there's literally dead inside because of the war. Or he's saying he's borderline dead inside and this is why he's giving away his life to the army. "I don't mind falling to pieces."
He's telling himself to keep breathing after he was wounded with "breathe the breath of life" so that he can leave the world after he fulfills his purpose of keeping the enemy off his team for as long as possible. After all, he had just been left behind.
I think both our ways are valid interpretations because BB's songs tend to have many interpretations. Since Ben says we should figure it out by ourselves and doesn't tell us what the meaning behind it is, we really don't have a definite answer. There are many unknown soldiers; yours could apply to one and mine to another. In conclusion, since the meaning of the song is not known for sure it is up to the listeners interpretation. I believe both of ours work.
+George Kromidas Agreed. Not to mention no one in Breaking Benjamin fought in any war, so to assume their lyrics in this song are literally about fighting in war is kinda dumb. Most likely it's a giant metaphor.

Why is it called unknown soldier when it is a version of diary of jane? And for that matter, a much softer version with piano. Not that im complaining because it is good, but I was surprised when a different song came up.
it's not a "different version". Bands have a similar sound in some songs .
