The shops are still built in the decades old design; shop and leave, owners living upstairs. Shops are not designed to welcome shoppers to sit and stay for refreshments and to shop again on the same day as in the new modern shopping complexes

The shops are styled for customers to buy and leave, also, the people value family life. The population is too small for any sort of crowding.

Lots of shops but do not have the population to bring in good profits. It is a meagre profit and a long wait for customers in between. The shops are the hopes and dreams that take a long time to even make it.

You feel a sadness, an isolation when shopping, you may find you are the only shopper and u feel saf for the hooes and dreams of tge owners not coming to fruition for decades upon decades. I left with a small number of shops struggling for customers, i return with many more shops all built in the same style and hardly any customers shopping. Seria and Kuala Belait are almost like ghost towns except for the shop owners and hardly enough customers to keep the going except for their savings and hopes.

The country is not rich, only the sultan his family and the ministers are rich, hose working in BSP retire erll but most of the country are just ordinary workers and some do struggle to keep their families fed and clothed. The population is small and many Chinese have migrated because they were not permitted to buy land even though they were long time residents and cannot apply for citizenships even though they sat for the exams. They are purposely denied citizens. Only very old generations of Chinese who somehow got citizenship before citizenship was stopped , continue to live there, plus some expatriates who are Chinese from nearby countries

Does not look like one, and i am still not finding their ranking on the world's happiest countries. But then, they might live happily in their own ways, nobody can really judge on how happy other nations are. By the way, Malaysia is ranked 5th this year.

People migrate when they cannot see a future for their children ir themselves. When BSP either finished their lease or had no more need of their buildings, instead of negotiating for their employees and selling the houses to those presently living in them, they heartlessly demolished the houses. This selfish, uncaring attitude towards the locals do not help keep the people happy and to remain in the country. These people migrate because they cannot buy houses or lands to build. The government and BSH(Shell, local reference) do not care about the people who were living in them and are actually homeless as they are living in Shell houses, and when asked to leave , Need to find housing elsewhere; the houses that they were occupying could be sold to them at a cheaper price, including the land. However, both Shell and the government chose to demolish these houses snd now it is just a blank open field with a silly modern marker to commemorate the site. It is not even a welcoming park where people can sit and picnic or have a playground for families; it is just a wasteland of grass and one simple monument. So desolate and almost eerie, since it was once an estate of houses for Shell employees. So sad. So many people are homeless but cram in with relatives. yet good, nice houses are demolished because the Government snd Shell do not want to give or sell the houses to the occupying employees of Shell.
