Towa's done a couple of KR study streams featuring Chigusa (and Cpt?), and she learned some terms all the way back when she teamed up with Nun Bora and Selly. In her recent collab with Kiara she said she has an interest in learning because of her Korean gaming friends.
A lot of the niji/vspo/holo/etc. circle know very basic Korean they pick up from Korean streamers with mondo going out of his way to teach bad words. It’s a very effective way to break the ice with some of these groupings.
In Towa's case she originally looked up useful korean FPS terms when she teamed up with selly and Bora to make it easier for selly, since back then he wasn't that good at japanese yet. After that she just kept learning stuff since she made more korean friends over time.
So is Korean in Japan kinda like Spanish is to English in the west (as in the most familiar language that isn’t their native tongue)? I’ve always noticed that a lot of JP seem to know a lot of random or even basic korean phrases and vocab for some reason and show it off at any chance they get lol. Always found that curious.
Not really, no. These are very common Korean words, which most Japanese (and East Asians/Southeast Asians in general) probably pick up from K-pop or gaming. The average Japanese does not speak Korean. Having said that, Japanese and Korean languages have a somewhat similar grammatical structure, and have lots of similar-sounding words (loan words from Chinese). As you might know, kanji means Chinese characters, which comes from ancient China (surprise!). Interestingly, when Japanese 'borrowed' kanji, they mixed them up to create new terms as well as made up new kanji characters, which in turn are exported to China again in the 18/1900s. An example would be the word 科学, which means science in both Japanese and Chinese today. And the Korean language didn't have a written form until King Sejong created hangul in 1443, so before that the royalties read and wrote imported fancy Chinese scripts (Chinese characters are called hanja in Korean) to signify their class. So there are lots of loan words there too. Not a linguist, but hope that clarifies a little bit about the three languages!
Not words but i think its more on Grammar, All they have to do is study vocab, writing characters excluded. Spanish words tho has similar words in the PH. And in the PH, we have similar words from ID.
