One of the things I love about Coraline is that you can easily understand where both the parents AND the child are coming from. The parents have just moved several states over for work, gotten into a car accident, the mom is in physical pain from said accident, & they’re under pressure to meet work deadlines. Meanwhile, Coraline had no say in essentially being torn from her home, school & friends and having to start over in both a house & a town that wouldn’t appeal to most kids. Plus, she’s gotta be 10-11 ish, so she’s at a weird age where she’s still very much a child who wants her parents’ attention, and given the circumstances is probably looking to cling to the only thing familiar, but she’s old enough that it’s reasonable to expect her to entertain herself for a few hours while the parents are still in the house but busy with work.
