You'll find references to Spike's outfit, Spike and Giles being father and son, and the loan shark in Restless finale of season 4. Lots of good stuff! I love this episode. It's great when a show isn't afraid to make fun of itself. I still wish, when they first got their memories back, Xander had said: "Hey! Ben is Glory!"

The buffy and spike thing is complicated because she believes that he doesn't have a soul so she can use his feelings for her to have her "feel something" Spike even tho he doesn't have a soul does have feelings (unlike a lot of vampires). The judge even comments on it way back in season 2. That spike and drusilla actually had genuine affection for each other. So for buffy she just wants to feel something and forget her problems and spike has genuine affection for her so it's sad in that sense. I think she does have some feelings for him but is masked by depression. I think part of is we as the audience knows he cares about her but to buffy he has no soul and couldn't possibly actually care about anything. I dunno if that's word salad or if that made sense at all.

I would say it's one of the best soundtrack moments of anything ever. I don't know why it affects me so much, but it will instantly make my eyes wet and I'm pretty tough dude. Though Once more with feeling is my most favorite episode of the series, and there is only one episode from TV that I consider better, and that's Twin Peaks the Return episode 8. Though nobody should watch that series unless he/she have seen all of David Lynch's work, and Twin Peaks the series and film short while before that series.

i have 2 music episode ending moments that really stick with me. one is later in this season when alison krauss's voice comes on and sings 'who would sell their soul for love?'. the other one is season 2 finale when buffy leaves town to sarah mclachlan singing 'winter here's cold, and bitter, it's chilled us to the bone. we havent seen the sun for weeks, too far too long from home'

Just an FYI- “Tabula Rasa” is Latin and it means, “Blank Slate.” Meaning their memories became a blank slate. This is one of my favorite episodes and a wonderful follow-up to OMWF! I still can’t hear Michelle Branch’s song, “Good-Bye To You,” without picturing the ending to this episode….. All of it. From Willow crying as Tara leaves…. To Spuffy kissing. Also- get the in-your-face “Loan Shark” who wants his kittens! Hilarious! Buffy is the absolute QUEEN OF PUNS! Even without saying them outloud! Best. Television Show. Ever.

You are seeing the Spuffy thing for exactly what it is.. Buffy doesn’t want to be attracted to him, but she also feels alone with all that she has gone through and can relate more to him than everyone else in the gang.. especially with Giles leaving. It’s not the healthiest relationship.
    Anyway, great reaction! 👍

You know I really love the frequent writing and directive styling technique used on Buffy where they make the dialogue for one main character’s interactions with other characters in one scene of an episode relate to another main character’s interactions with other characters in another scene of it even though both scenes are in different times and places. It’s almost as if they’re subconsciously aware of the situation happening for each other and therefore building on the theme. Not sure I explained it well but take the individual scenes between Willow/Tara and Buffy/Giles in ‘Tabula Rasa’ for example:
TARA: “I don't know, I just... think we both need some... I don't know, space.
    *Willow looks upset*
    Oh, I can’t believe I’m saying this.”
WILLOW: “Are you saying you're gonna leave me?”
*Cut to Giles sitting on the sofa in the workout room*
    GILES: “I have to.”
*Reveal Buffy standing beside him. She looks shocked*
    BUFFY: “Uh-huh.”
*She sits on a pile of exercise mats, frowning*
GILES: “You have to be strong. I'm, I'm trying to-“
    BUFFY:
    *Jumps up*
    “Trying to, to what?
    *Angrily*
Desert me? Abandon me? Leave me all alone when I really need somebody?”
    GILES:
    *Quietly*
    “I don’t want to leave.”
    BUFFY: “So don't. Please don't.
*She goes to sit beside him*
I can't do this without you.”
So because the creators have decided to parallel both Buffy and Willow’s individual arcs with depression/addiction together, they do this really clever thing in the episode ‘Once More, With Feeling’ where they give us a reprise of both Tara’s song ‘Under Your Spell’ and Giles’ song ‘Standing’ in which both characters express their choice to leave their respective loves (Willow/Buffy) behind, confessing that they wish they could stay but believe it’s for the best that they leave. So in the following episode ‘Tabula Rasa’ both Tara and Giles confront Willow and Buffy about their choices. And the scenes between the characters are distanced between time and place but are connected by a common thematic narrative: separation. Tara will separate herself from her romantic relationship with Willow and Giles will separate himself from his father figure relationship with Buffy. And the writers and directors of the episode choose to deliver both individual scenes to the audience through using this writing and directive styling choice of connecting the interactions between them through the dialogue.
I haven’t seen that been done before in anything else thus far. Certainly nothing recent. It could be a 90’s/early 2000’s technique or it could just be unique to the Buffyverse. I’m not sure. But the creators of Buffy use it frequently and I love it. I know exactly what they’re going for each time they do use it. What effect they’re intending to have on the viewer. I think it really elevates the storytelling and makes it very engaging for me to watch the show. It’s extremely clever. I believe this is one of the things that make it timeless.

This episode is my spirit animal....
As one of the charter members of the Spuffy club, I think your reading of this episode is right on. There's no way Buffy is in love with Spike here. Attracted? Yes. Has feelings for? Yeah, probably although I'd say it's more gratitude than anything else. Obviously things are far more complicated now than they were in the beginning of S5 when he was just a minor pest with a crush. What you said though is absolutely true. He's there, right now and nobody else is. I have serious issues with this season but I think this episode and the previous one are highlights of the entire run.
As for the Willow/Tara relationship, I think a lot of the fanbase really turned on Willow at this point...and with very good cause.

Think how so much of this show is about real life things in a fantasy supernatural way. Like the first 3 seasons how it was going through high school, peer pressure, clicks, teen angst, etc. Now it's addiction to magic, but think of real life addiction like to drugs and what that can do to people. What drug addicts can do to others. Also, Spike and his obsession with Buffy. Love/Obsession can drive people to do insane things. Imagine what a soulless immortal might do, the movie Misery(1990) comes to mind or Romeo and Juliet, or maybe something even crazier.

Also, I don't think he noticed the callback to season 4 episode 22 where Giles and Spike were on the swing where Giles tells Buffy, "Spike is like a son to me." lol Their 'supposed father and son' relationship is the best thing to watch, at least for me, next to the other comedic bits.

Giles's decision to leave is based on the same view that made him oppose the Council. Traditionally, the Slayer was more or less dependent on the Watcher. Statistically, they were almost always poor, while the Watchers are at the very least upper-middle class. The Council doesn't give the Slayer money, because if they are financially stable they may be more inclined to question their orders.

Tabula Rasa was a great innovative episode with comedy overload. There was foreshadowing here from S4 finale Restless with Giles and Spike saying he was his son etc. We see Willow again going to the dark side with addiction to magic for her own selfish purposes, mirroring serious drug addiction. As they all have no memories this lends itself to great comedy. A brilliant use of Michelle Branch's gorgeous ballad Goodbye To You that was specially recorded for this episode. Willow is her own worse enemy devoured by her love and lust for Tara who feels total betrayal after what Glory did to her mind in S5, and of course we see 'Spuffy' is now very real.

One of the best episodes of the entire show. Spike/Buffy is all too true-to-life behaviour. Depressed and don't feel you deserve any better, get with someone you don't even like just to try to feel something. You do it with someone you don't like because that way you know you won't be hurting someone you do like. It's horrible and unhealthy but very real.
Giles leaving is because Buffy isn't just leaning on him, she's abandoning her responsibilities without asking and just assuming that others will pick up the pieces. From Giles' perspective he's tried to fix it before and it hasn't worked. Last episode he tried to stop picking up the pieces to force her to do it, but he realised he couldn't actually bear to stay on the side-lines and won't be able to do that if he stays.
Tara is a god-damn badass in this episode, and Amber really got to show off her acting chops.

On top of everything Tara says to Willow, Willow also erased memories of Tara being angry and then slept with her twice (once just after the spell was enacted and once just after the _Under Your Spell_ song), perhaps more than that. It is blatant rape in that context and situation. Willow was the toxicity in a relationship Tara needed to get away from. The cut from Willow saying she'll go a month without magic to using it to dress and once again trying to erase memories showed the crux of all Tara was talking to Willow about. Willow failed. Tara left.
I don't think Giles only option was to leave town again, I do understand why he thought he had to, though. But considering Buffy is literally depressed, I don't think her stand up on her own is very possible at this point. Depression is clinical, not just something to easily get over. And he's leaving her with very few people who didn't pull her out of heaven. One of which is coming onto him because she's depressed and wants to feel something. Just before Buffy kisses Spike in the musical's ending her lyrics are, "This isn't real. But I just want to feel."
"The happiest sad episode of BtVS" or "the saddest happy episode of BtVS." Take your pick on whichever one works better.
How many people acknowledged upon the first viewing that the shark is designed the way he's designed because his job is that of a loan shark?

Well done for acknowledging Willow’s rape/sexual assault of Tara and pointing it out. I try to do this as often as possible.
Interesting you think Willow slept with Tara twice while she was under her spell. I totally got it with the ‘Under Your Spell’ scene. But what made you think that they had sex just after Willow performed the spell? All it looks like that happened there was they fell asleep cuddled up together. Still a non-consensual situation but there didn’t seem to be any sexual intimacy involved. Like there was no kissing or anything like that. Tara just spooned into Willow to “warm her up”.

    • @Buffy8Fan
      @Buffy8Fan 2 года назад +3

@@Girl4Music I think its just as likely as falling asleep. That one is up to judgement and/or personal opinion, I agree, but after _Under Your Spell_ definitely isn't. Just as it's up to an individual viewer if it happened more.
I assume there may be others we might not know about. People assume the musical was the next day after the Halloween episode, but I always assumed a week, with another week for the Scoobies to have their meeting about Buffy's revelation after sitting on it themselves for a while (which would make it understandable as to why Willow wouldn't have noticed Tara having distanced herself to keep an eye on her and being hesitant to dumping her). So any intimacy moment during the spell being enacted and Tara finding out is sexual assault and/or unwanted touching Tara isn't even aware that she doesn't condone at the moment.
