I just listened to a bunch of these intern David videos in a row, and I noticed that Opie's only contribution to the show is throwing out juvenile, frat-boy hazing ideas. Every now and then he suggests throwing something on someone, giving someone a wedgie (a man in his 50's used the word wedgie), etc. his amazing suggestions are ignored every single time. It's like he isn't even speaking. He's literally a frat boy shock jock. Brilliant comedy there.

ant tried to play tough guy a lot too. both of them trying to pretend they hated golden girls while patrice and norton were telling them it was actually a great show is a great example that comes to mind

David was so great when he first started coming on. He was great the whole time, but he had a lot of time where he got full of himself and started to turn his natural dorkiness into routines. Kind of like how Twitchles turned into just a character instead of a weird act. David had way more funny to keep him fresh though than Twitchles did. Everyone started to hate Twitchles in studio because he was so phony and put on. Patrice, Opie, Jim, and Ant all hated Twitchles after a while for it, but David kept us entertained enough not to totally piss people off. Plus Colin LOVED him.
He was smart enough to pull back on doing it as a routine even if he was still naive and that was what made him funny. Sam always understood how much gold David was though and said a lot that he would do anything to get David back on the show over anyone else that wasn't kept. XD
You can see this in a nutshell during the David & Bobo show run. The first episode was hilarious has it's all David's natural ineptness at an interview and conversation. Towards the end it was just him intentionally trying to do a bit and it lost steam.

Hack means it was always terrible. Something that hasn't aged well isn't hack unless you're still doing it to this day. I'd say over half this show doesn't hold up nowadays, but it's still entertaining for the time. The entire show isn't hack though.
i think there’s a lot more context to it in the tv show, like he goes to the south and the comedy is in these strangers just voluntarily singing “throw the jew down the well.”
of course opie completely eliminates all the context and timing of the original to play just the audio all the way thru, to complete silence from everyone else, looking over to david 500 times to ask “do you like this song? you like it?”
