I took my Mom to see this show in NYC loved their performance. I happened to meet Lou Diamond Phillips and the stage door and got a hug and kiss on the cheek, it was a memorable moment for me. However I think his wife was waiting in their limo and I don’t think she appreciated my gesture of affection as a fan.
I am her BIGGEST fan but she was not right for this role. It was upsetting to see her in this part. Murphy was better but played Anna as a bit .....well strange.
I saw this. Faith prince had joined the show less than two weeks prior & kept dropping her accent. But, she had incredible chemistry with Lou Diamond Phillips. Right before he placed his hand on her hip, you could have heard a pin drop.
I was in the kitchen the other day, and I started humming this tune... I saw this in Sydney in about 1991 with Hayley Mills as Anna. My mother loves this scene rom the movie too. One of the musical theatre's great boy&girl dance routines!
Well, he’s playing the King of Siam so yes, the King is supposed to be Asian. However, the actor’s ability to project the spirit and integrity of the character. The first three original choices to play the King were Rex Harrison (who was superb in the film ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM), Alfred Drake ( who received excellent reviews when replacing Brynner in summer 1953 and who Richard Rogers thought was excellent- he was offered the role and turned it down) and Noel Coward who was also offfered the chance to direct but turned it down due to taxes here and England. Not a damn one was Asian and all would have been excellent. Being Asian is not that important. In the last revival, the King was played by an actor that had no voice, just terrible.
@@lostvocals8 That’s not a historical documentary, it’s theatre. There’s room for interpretation and emotions. Yul‘s opinion is just an opinion, not a law.
I would have passed out if I was on stage standing that close to Lou diamond Phillips, let alone dancing with him oh my God.

I wasn't able to see this product with Lou Diamond Philips when I was living in Wash, DC due to work and I am still kicking myself!!!!
What a treat to see Faith Prince in this clip. It's so different from her usual roles. I got to see this production with Donna Murphy.

Oh, please post more from this production! I have so many vivid memories I'd love to relive!

Hi David---there is more to come.

I wonder if during rehearsals he ever stepped on that huge dress!
who cares; he does it better than Yul
I thought the king was supposed to be Asian or is it the camera
Lou Diamond Phillips is half Filipino

It’s the camera. His name is not at all Asian!! And Faith Prince is not British or Welsh. Stick to Gertrude Lawrence and You’ll Brynner!!
@@johnpickford4222 Yul Brenner is long dead. I heard that Lou Diamond Philips did great.
They take the romance way too far.
Not at all.
@@Beadle_Bamford Since there was no romance at all between the two actual people, this is way too much. Yul got it right.

@@Beadle_Bamford By Yul, I meant the original production, which wisely understood that the romance needed to be hinted at, not forced.
@@lostvocals8 Nothing is forced here, you are trying to set your rather constricted opinion as a law. You are wrong.
