The chart that the Buddy Rich Band plays in this video is their arrangement of songs from West Side Story. I recommend that you look up other live performances of this tune because this video does NOT have the impossible section. That's when Buddy plays a blisteringly fast single stroke roll starting at ffff and then quieting down to pppp losing absolutely none of the speed or intensity. From there he moves to the snare's rim, get loud and soft again before signaling the band back in. It's truly amazing.
I used to set up Buddy Rich’s gigs in the 60’s, he’s a great cat! Easy to work for, he is very much missed! Mr. Old Blue eyes Sinatra were both with the same agency.
And you can tell he was suffering a heart attack; he was breathing heavily even before he started playing in earnest, and his pained expressions in the middle of the solo clearly reflect that he was struggling even as he was playing perfectly. I saw (and met) him shortly before he died in '87. RIP Buddy!
Buddy NEVER practiced, he was busy playing sll the time. He started playing in Vaudeville when he was 18 months old and still in diapers. He was a true prodigy. By the time he was four years old he'd played all over the world.
he was a month short of 65 here....also never practised in his life....never touched a stick out side of a gig...never took a formal lesson...in short he was a savant
@@jimfraher2166 You're going to use the word "formal". Baloney. I was on B's band. I listened to his stories. He told me of some of the greats who gave him lessons as a child.
There are stories because Buddy played from the age of 2 that he saw Billy Gladstone play & of course as Buddy noted Chick Webb. Also Buddy did say that younger students should get a teacher & learn to read. But Buddy was an anomaly. As dizzy Gillespie said “ some musicians give 💯 % he gives 130 % . Vale Maestro Rich .
buddy rich had a minor heart attack when he was being filmed. but he kept playing and playing. it appears you can s ee it right on his face in this concert footage.
He was my dad's age... So I grew up with Buddy Rich... I know how great my dad was, is. I know how great my dad ; buddy.... Is. Thanks for every family...we love. bud !
This solo is not just excellent, it's more like a miracle. There are so many beautiful ideas perfectly executed and with an amazing interconnection... it really deserves to be studied closely. It's even better than people think it is. It is miraculous.
I saw Buddy live in London in 1980 and that was a profound impact on my own drumming. This man had speed, artistry and technique and musicianship I’ve never seen equalled. Subscribed to your channel.
I am in my mid 50's and picked up the bass guitar 7 months ago with no experience, save a tiny bit of skill in playing a lick or two on the banjo. I am loving it. My bass instructor suggested I take up drums too to help my bass playing, timing, etc. Well, who doesn't think the drums are cool??? At any rate, I have a practice pad and stand on the way. All this said, this was a great video. I have watched this many times, but to have Nikilai, as a young man and accomplished drummer, give such sound commentary on Buddy's playing...it made for such a great and, shall I say, reverent, video. Thanks Nikolai! New subber here!
Whatching a reaction video in its entirety is great for the viewer and very much appreciated. It's very rare for a RUclipsr to do that. However, constantly talking over the footage non-stop ruins what could've been an awesome experience for me. It's your channel and you can react to the content however you want, but I personally cannot sit through a great performance like this and listen to the RUclipsr continually talk over it. I apologize for being so harsh. You seem like a very dedicated drummer. I wish you a lot of luck with your channel. Thanks!
I bet you didn't know that the GREAT Buddy Rich suffered a heart attack half way through the solo and was immediately put in an ambulance to take him to ER.. That's dedication like never before.. If ya don't believe me, research it
Buddy Rich is and was the world's greatest drummer. Other drummers of his time were Gene Krupa, Louie Belson, Jo Jones, Joe Morrello, Cozy Cole, Sonny Payne, Elvin Jones, Mack Roach, Chick Web, Tony Willams, Billy Cobham, Kenny Clark
Buddy was not in his prime in this concert. I'm not sure why people refer to this as the impossible drum solo when there are so many more videos of him playing when he really was in his prime.
yes buddy had a heart attack and yes Buddy didn't practice and said rudiments were nonsense yet played all the rudiments. I worked with Don Menza and Art Pepper 2 of the best sax soloists of all time studied with Freddy Gruber who taught Neal Peart that I heard from these guys that Buddy had a photographic memory they would bring in a drummer to read and play a 20 min complex chart while Buddy would sit watching it 1 time and get on the drums and play the chart perfectly NOONE HAS EVER DONE THIS ACCEPT MAYBE MOZART ON OTHER INSTRUMENTS BUDDY IS THE GOAT ON THE DRUMS AND MAYBE AS AN OVERALL MUSICIAN ALL THE GREATS HAVE PRACTICED AND HAD TO READ MUSIC TO PLAY SONGS NOT BUDDY RICH HE JUST LISTENED ONCE AND COULD REPEAT IT LIKE A ROBOT OR COMPUTER
BUDDY RICH IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE WORLD'S GREATEST DRUMMER!!! A REPUTATION HE EARNED WORLD WIDE! HE WAS A ONE OF A KIND AND A ONCE EVER!! THE GREATEST TECHNICIAN OF DRUMMINGTHE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN!!
Isn't that the point though? To make the next generations better than you were? Joey can thank buddy for how he plays, and buddy can look proudly on Joey for taking it to such hights.
Actually, that high hat solo that technique goes back to the 30s and 40s Gene Krupa used to do it look at some old videos once in a while of the great drummers and you’ll see them doing this hi hat work with a left-hand underneath the bottom cym.
Seriously ... With the likes of Billy Cobham, Chris Coleman, Vinnie Colaiuta and Anthony Cole around ... Honestly, stop and think about that ... Weckl, CHAMBERS???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!
That hat thing he does is a well-known technique get the gene Krupa book go to the section on the hi hat work and you’ll see tons of exercises using this technique also also by the way we could do without the commentary it really ruins the track can’t you leave the commentary for after the video is over?!
With respect, same solo but Live at the Hague...even more insane
Thank you for the Buddy Rich solo and your kind comments toward him

I did not know that was what they wrote for West Side Story! Definately an interesting factoid, thanks for letting me know!

That is Wild! I bet you loved that job, I always heard Buddy Rich was very down to earth and great to talk to. Thanks for the Comment my man!
Buddy had a minor heart attack during this performance. He went straight from the stage to the hospital.
That is a Crazy fact! I did not know that
The truth.

Buddy did indeed take lessons when he was a child.

Unique physical ability. Buddy could easily humble any drummer with his snare comping alone.
Buddy Rich is one of my favorite drummer 🥁 of all time.
He did this while he was felling sick also.
Yeah. One can see he’s not feeling the greatest physically perhaps, but in usual BR excellence… his mastery was just … yall know. TY. ❤🎵

Thanks for bringing more people to Buddy. He was a musical and technical genius.
Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa are probably my all time faves.. Their epic drum battle will live on forever. RIP to both.

Forget greatest drummer of all time. Perhaps the greatest musician of all time!
Watch buddy rich 1970 Jesus Christ that’s perfection in a solo and the best single rolls ever
Buddy made his drums and cymbals sing. With cheap single braced gear. He had natural born talent. ty
Yes Buddy had a heart attack during this solo

I was blessed to see this man play 18 times

It's impossible cause you gotta have a heart attack and keep playing lol
I can’t say I’ve seen any another drummer play this song….well..
I hope you know Buddy Rich suffered a heart attack half way through this solo and at the end he was rushed to the hospital
Check Jack Scarangella, Buddy's protege

can hardly hear the drumming but your all to clear....it should be the other way around?
