I’ve come to notice that from soft has one type of place consistent across their games, not the poison areas, but one no-one ever mentions, it’s what I call the “holy-shit..” place, it’s never really the hardest, or maybe even most memorable part in the game, but it’s always that one area where everything you’ve learned about the world crushingly manifests itself, and you just get that morbid moment of awe at the most messed up aspects of the story. We see it in the darkened firelink shrine in Dark Souls III, at that point in the game many people already know what the plot is, or what the age of fire means, but seeing the dead fire keepers, their bodies stacked upon each other as if they meant nothing, realizing your shrine is only one of millions, and no matter what you do, another will arise over its place. Likewise, here is where we realize just what is actually happening in Yharnam, not a simple scourge of beasts, but a curse befallen upon humanity by inciting the wrath of the great ones, you see the grotesque results of the choirs depraved experiments with Ebrietas, the sins the church hides from the people, and the horrifying ends they met.
Actually there's only one Firelink Shrine in DS3, the Darkened one we visit is the same one but from the past, which why we fight Champion Gundyr, a younger, not yet corrupted by the abyss and infected with a pus of man Gundyr. There's a lot of time travel going on in the background of DS3 and this place is one example of this.
And yet, the Good Hunter can wake up, in the Waking World, or what we "believe" it to be that is. The Nightmare where the Old Hunters reside in on the other hand, is a Restless Nightmare. A Nightmare where you are asleep, but your body is truly long gone, but you, yourself, the conscious mind can't rest, and become mad, only to be soothed by fresh arterial, oxygen rich blood, which keeps your brain from becoming a solid chunk of rock, a dreamless mind trapped inside a brain of stone, but is for all intents and purposes, rotted or even gone, at least that is how I envision it. But in truth? It is a barrier, an extremely powerful one, very likely deviced by the Great Old Ones, even the Moon Presence, to imprison the pregnant corpse of Kos, to prevent a Lateborn child from being birthed into being, unleashed to wreaking mindless beastial havoc upon the real world, constantly evolving and adapting, becoming more powerful as the only Great Old One who is truly non-sapient, but just sentient. Neither beast nor kin, but a real monstrosity, an unholy Union of Disaster and Tragedy: the Orphan of Kos.
When they put music in any Souls borne area, it means that either its a beautiful and resting place(Firelink) or Why am I here, someone take me out please ( Yagh'ar ghul or this)
The soundtrack is the biggest reason why Upper Cathedral Ward feels so disturbing. Its stark minimalism and atonal melodies really get under your skin and make you dread what could possibly be waiting for you next.
Loved the atmosphere in Upper Cathedral Ward, this track played a big part in that. The vocals really remind me of György Ligeti, very unsettling. Many thanks for uploading this!
yes played it yesterday and walking in dark building with brainsuckers and this music was just great i was like ok if u jump on me from next corner im gonna shit myself
Everytime I'm about to enter the upper cathedral ward on a playthough, I'm always filled with excitement and dread in entering its dark oppressive halls once again.
Am I the only one who's shivering listening this theme? Seriously, man, it's the creepiest place I've ever visited in Bloodborne. I think I'll never forget those 3 Lycans destroying the chandelier and chasing me...! Judging by their blue eyes, I think they're the remaining members of the Choir after becoming beasts.
It's one of the creepiest, most unsettling places out of any game I can think of. The atmosphere is just overwhelming in that place. The slurp slurps of the brainsuckers certainly helps with the creep factor.
@@Crichjo32 True. Upper Cathedral Ward was the place in the game that really, really gave me anxiety at most. There was also a jumpscare at some point.
@@Kain_Highwind_ Same, i genuinly felt scared exploring that area something i didnt really feel with any other area. Yahar'gul was creepy, upper cathedral was just straight up horrifying.
@@aephyn_ I like Dark Souls, though I think that's a given. I thought Sekiro was pretty good. I like a lot of the Zelda games, I've been playing Breath of the Wild lately. I haven't played it in a while but I enjoy Monster Hunter quite a bit. I'm sure there's more but I'm tired lol

Me, having come here from the "Not Safe" track from OFF after having just listened to "Dollhouse" from Alice Madness Returns: ...Abs. Tanned, tomboyish girls with abs. We can pretend that's my fetish and talk about that for an hour instead of what kind of music I listen to. Trust me, it'll be a WAY less uncomfortable-slash-traumatizing discussion for you.
The first time going indoors in this area reminded me of Resident Evil with the dark rooms, corridors, enemies that grab and badly hurt you, and this track somewhat resembling Macabre Hallway
What the hell are this things in black bed sheets? Statues? Trees? Creatures? Upper catedral ward is full of these creepy things and nobody mention it!!!

Vendricks resting place in the Undead Crypt...
how can a piece of music music be called soothing yet be put in a place which is so eerie
it make the place so freakin ominous

When I first reached the upper Cathedral and heard this I noped out and left the game for like a week lmao.

I really feel like this stage is where they put the most work in, because it really captures everything about bloodborne

Bloodborne has probably the best art direction in the games history
It's certainly a master class in art direction and atmosphere.

Bloodborne and Ocarina of Time are the most artistical videogames ever gotten. Zelda is in our infancy and Bloodborne in our adulthood
Feel the same brother

i wish there was an hour version of this i use these songs to play board games with my friends xD
Fear the Old Blood.
We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood.
@NexusKin oooo-oooohhHHoo- whooooooooOOO
Scientists have been coming up with audio recordings of black holes and it kind of sounds like this??
That's amazing!
""""Soothing""""
😌
Ya know, the title Soothing Hymn never specified who or what the Hymn was Soothing.
ah, yes, soothing
i grinded a lot in this area with two moon runes and the blood rapture, the one that gives you more echoes for visceral attacks
YES! I did the same thing and can't believe its not a well known strategy.
Wait a second, the Blood Rapture runes heal from viseral attacks, The Heir Runes are the ones that gives echos from viserals
asmr sleep aid ambience

They actually bear a similar resemblance to Mergo's Wet Nurse, the final boss that tries to protect Mergo at the very top of the Nightmare Of Mensis.
As soothing as my mother screaming at me to get up for school....
would be cool if you could overlay the wind SFX over this that plays in the area
This is everything but soothing. Deceptive advertising, literally unplayable.
