    Fun factn in Belarusian auroch is called " Тур". The second city founded in whole Belarus in 980 a.d. that still exists today was named " Тураў " which can be translated as the " auroch's city " since they were plentiful in the area.

    The wild, primeval Aurochs was an amazingly cool creature: powerful, untamed and fierce. With current DNA sequencing and geonome work, it should be possible to fully bring it back. This video is going on my "Reviving Extinct & Endangered Life" RUclips Playlist.

    Texas Longhorns show what happens when you leave cattle alone to go feral long enough. They were recreating Aurochs on their own. Given more time they would have even become closer to it.

      @@meneither3834 Yes. But there are two different types of human interaction with animals.
      There is simply hunting, and there is domestication.
      What to me would be sensible would be to use historical hunting grounds and try to connect them into a bigger hunting ground. These are usually the remaining forests in Europe.
      So we're not aiming to exclude ourselves here, just aiming to create space without domestication.

      In the short term, I think you are right. The cattle will essentially be domestic cattle of a new breed or type. But the last step in the rewilding process, turning them loose to survive independently of human intervention, is the key to long-term success. Surviving on their own in nature will result in natural selection for survival traits that over a number of generations will differentiate them from domestic cattle breeds. Something very similar happened in North America when Spanish cattle escaped and became feral. By the mid 1800's, there were probably millions of feral cattle roaming what is now northern Mexico and southwestern USA. They were very wild and extremely well adapted to their environment.

      Genes are just data. They descend from a native source and can be reassembled exactly given the right circumstances (largely dependent on nature). So logically it is easy to look at a few cows and run their genetics and compare to an "ancient" sample. Breed cows with the most matching DNA rinse and repeat until the whole genome becomes more and more similar to the ancient sample. Short of gene editing it is the best approach and absolutely given time can be successful.

    • @SaneAsylum
      @SaneAsylum 4 года назад

      @@r6343 True. And ultimately no population will ever have the same exact circumstances and will have to adapt to the circumstances they face.

      Just like we bred wild animals to be tame, we can use the same selection process to breed tame animals to be wild.
      However, I wonder if it wouldn't be faster to simply put the animals into a hunting ground, they will be hunted by us and other animals. That way they will be selected to be smarter, faster, bigger and stronger. That may be the end goal I think, but for now they're trying to breed to a point that they think these animals will stand a chance against predation.

    A lot of this will happen on its own if you let it. But you'll need the support of the farmers i.e. paying for and installing the needed fencing that keeps predators out of lifestock fields AND it needs to be done BEFORE the predators return! Lifestock is easy food and has more bodyfat than wild prey, making it a very attractive food source. Making hunting lifestock too difficult and having enough wild prey species available enables farmers and predators to inhabit the same area without conflict. This is the part that the rewilders tend to ignore/forget/not understand.

    Grazing Highland cattle can improve habitat ten times... more animals and more plants. a very simple tool to aid in the extension of our current mass extinction process.Why? This breed eats everything, while common breeds must eat only improved plants to maintain weight. The result bad or weed plants survive. The Highland cow is a model of sustainability and one of the most Natural bovine species. Combine Beavers, and wait, plants and animals invade and utilize every, water in the soils assures plant growth even in drought conditions, recharging the ground water.

      I'm sorry but that's not true. The 'nazi cattle' which is a very stupid name by the way (the true name is Heck cattle) don't resemble the aurochs. They're too small, their horn curvature isn't good enough et cetera.
      That's why they are going to breed a new aurochs like type of cattle.
      As far as I know there are three different projects aiming to breed back the aurochs (Uruz Project, Tauros Project & Taurus Project.

      Chris Nature I know the name is Heck Cattle, but considering what they had and how quickly they did it, they didnt do a bad job, AND NO IM NOT SUPPORTING THE NAZIS! Im just saying you got to give them credit considering what they had they wasnt all that far off when it came to outward appearances. Obviously i hate them and everything they stand for but I gotta say the Heck cattle really looks like what id picture and aurochs to look like

    • @geogm.840
      @geogm.840 8 лет назад +2

      +Guy Forrest, The British Dinosaur Man In my opinion, Heck doesn´t substitut european primitive cattle landraces, that are adapted for centuries or millenia to local climate, type of soil, predators, diseases and so on.. It´s only suitable (and it still needs lots of changes to become close to the aurochs) for countries that don´t have primitive cattle at all. And I doubt that Heck is the best option for countries that don´t have suitable animals, with the exception of Germany and nearby countries (because it´s already found there, it can be found in semi-feral form there and consequently should be also cheaper there).
