Your discussion of the start of winter sparked a thought for me: My first wife (I was only supposed to have one--but such is life) chose as our wedding day June 21--the longest day of the year and, consequently, the shortest possible wedding night of the year. I should have recognized that as an omen. The second wife chose as our wedding day December 21--the shortest day of the year and, consequently, the longest possible wedding night of the year. Needless to say, the second marriage has been utter bliss. ;-) Here's to the winter solstice!
One reason Brazil might have slower times is that mountain bikes (XC almost exclusively) prevail over road bikes by a lot! We're mostly riding gravel or singletrack trails.
I couldn't agree more. Good road bikes are more expensive than HT's and fast gravel bikes are even pricier than good road bikes. On top of that, most weekend warriors in Brazil are in pursuit of social rides, not kom's
The seasons are defined astronomically: Spring begins with the Vernal Equinox (around March 20, northern hemisphere), Summer with the Summer Solstice (around June 21), Fall with the Autumnal Equinox (around September 23), and Winter with the Winter Solstice (around December 21). The equinox is defined as the moment when the plane defined by the moment the earth's equator passes through the geometric center of the sun, and the solstices are defined as the moment the sun reaches its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator. The local time of these events depends on longitude and the although the local time of these events does not vary, the terms Spring/Fall, Summer/Winter are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere. The advantage of defining these terms in astronomical terms allows discussion to share a common basis and reduces confusion.
In southern Australia the seasons generally are based off the months - Summer starts December 1st, Autumn on March 1st, Winter on June 1st and Spring on September 1st. Mightn't be quite as scientifically accurate, but it is easier to remember (and the main rule of Melbourne weather is to expect all four seasons in one day everyday, so specific dates aren't as necessary) :).
I full agree with the above, seasons tart with equinoxes and solstices. The weather, or to be more precise the climate, on the continent aligns with the se dates, where deep Winter is in January / February and high Summer is mid July to end August. Britain as an island is an outlier with its maritime climate.
@@lyha91 It probably would have been more accurate to say "ecclesiastical" instead of either "astrological" or "astronomical." Apparently the reason the vernal equinox is on March 21 rather than some other date such as the first of the month goes back to Pope Gregory. According to Wikipedia, he "wanted to continue to conform with the edicts of the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD concerning the date of Easter, which means he wanted to move the vernal equinox to the date on which it fell {then on the Julian calendar]". And that date was 21 March.

And no knock on specific seasons, just that the lines between them are hazy around here, tho' I do like it when a day is true to its season, like a spring morning or a hot summer afternoon or even a mighty snowstorm in winter.
It's time we accepted that the seasons (in the UK anyway) are not equal in length. Winter (Dec-Mar) and summer (Jun - Sep) are 4 months long and autumn (Oct - Nov) and spring (Apr - May) are 2 months long. That's how it feels in Cumbria anyway.
In response to the winter conversation from a meteorology student at Oregon State University: The reason why meteorological winter is December 1st to February 28/29 is because this is the most likely time for wintery weather to occur in the NH. The coldest temperature on average also occurs around January 15th in the NH (varies by location), halfway through this definition of winter. Astronomical seasons start differently because they are based off of when the equinoxes and solstices occur. Winter solstice is December 21st because it's the day the NH tilts away the most from the sun.
Around here, fall and winter just kind of slowly bleed into each other. We've had the early winter sunsets for quite some time now but the weather has just been a seasonal mix of clouds, more clouds, wind, {shakes fist} damned wind, cool rain, and slightly milder (but still not fun to get caught outside in) rain. Haven't had any frozen precipitation to speak of or any ground frosts, so it's certainly not what some people would call winter weather. I'm just gonna say that it officially became winter upon the capitulation of the last of the little yellow flowers that line sections of a local trail that I frequent, and I haven't seen one in about ten days. On the plus side, tomorrow is the first day where the sunset actually starts moving back and by new year's eve we'll have gained a full ten minutes in the evening despite somehow losing six in the morning. No one really cares about those morning minutes though.
OMG. I actually AM a meteorologist and my wife is an astronomer…. FIRST, “Astrologically” speaking is ASTRONOMY! tisk tisk tisk. The astronomers do define seasons on the solstice and equinox, but as I am also a Celt, the celts and others used the “cross quarters” - Beltane (May day) / Lughnasa / Samhain (Halloween) / Imbolc (St Brigid’s Day, more or less Mardi Gras. Pagans seem to have returned, so you can find people running around on these days (not Pagan’s Biker Gang - don’t mess with them). So it is Midwinter and Midsummer for just the reason you declare. By that measure Winter should start on Halloween. That is a bit silly though - even though the general circulation switches from summer to winter conditions quite quickly at the Solstice (the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ, moves from roughly the northern tropic (Cancer) to the southern tropic (Capricorn) quite rapidly - much more quickly than the sun at noon itself - it takes a while to actually cool the Earth (really the ocean) down, so yea, Meteorological winter (as in it is cold and nasty) is skewed later than Halloween and starts in mid - late November. Hah.
Winter starts when the daylight savings takes an hour away and spring starts when we get the hour back. I go for rides after work but not in the winter when it's dark. Another reason to get rid of daylight savings!!
"There's nothing like starting a foggy ride then climbing up into the sunshine" Nice, yes, but beaten by flying a Boeing 757 from a foggy runway in Bergamo and climbing out over the Alps on a cold winters day 🙂 Scarily enough my average ride is 17 miles and 1hr20.
Si calling the German total of 5.4 billion m of elevation change on 657.6 million km ridden 'quite flat'... To us Dutchies that sounds like only riding uphill... I wonder what the total amount of m in elevation gained would be if the Dutch did 657.6 million km... It still wouldn't be more than a couple of hundred meters....
An hour ride is great, as Si says you can be in and out the house in no time and ride at an average pace that is a lot higher than when you cycle for 2 hours plus
With Dan as a runner and Conor as a swimmer, I'd like to see GCN presenters to a head-to-head triathlon against the GTN presenters. The GCN folks would do a relay but the GTN folks would have to do the whole event. I think that would be a really interesting crossover when the weather permits!
Date of season changes is a historical change adopted from the British Navy. By changing seasons on the first of the month helped sailors know when to change from blue uniform to white (and vice versa). As a result, the change of the seasons is on the first of the month throughout the former British Empire, whereas most of the rest of the world changes seasons on the Solstices and Equinoxes.
Another interesting video! I'm a cyclist in the USA and member of a bike club, so our club rides are MUCH longer in duration and elevation than the averages listed in this video. Not surprising I think.
It's the indoor trainer data that is skewing the results. Granted, we have grandmothers on Strava (like my mother) who ride shorter routes anywhere from 10 to 20 miles, but I feel that the majority of USA riders are doing more than that, and at least 2-hour averages for outdoor rides.
Seeing the opening form the Detroit Velodrome is sad these days- as the structure was blown apart over the weekend after the blower keeping it inflated lost power on a very windy day here in the midwest of the US.
This past year of riding was: Avg Ride Dist: 34.1miles / 54.8km, Avg Ride Time: 2hrs, Avg Ride Elev: 1,311ft / 400m - mix of road and gravel. Winter starts Dec 1st and ends Feb 28th. :)
Dec 21st is the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year. Days get longer during winter and shorter during summer as the first day of summer, June 21st, is the longest day of the year. After that, days get shorter
Regarding "WINTER"... I set my cycling season based on St. Patrick's Day (march 17th) to start, and my birthday at the end of Nov. No Matter the temps, snow or ice. Some rides require a Mt. Bike rather than road machine.
But I've also started considering a new old-guy rule: "Never Ride in Temps Colder than you are Old".... So while each season gets a little shorter, it also gets a little nicer every year.
In Canada winter lasts from about October to April. This year we got a record 2 weeks of actual summer then 4 months of rain, slush, and forest fire smoke.
Christmas starts in the UK supermarkets about September. I bet there are even some people getting ready for Christmas 2022. Can't they wait until Christmas 2021 has finished.
With those yellow colours in the GCN intro @0:28 now I'm always expecting to also see that infamous woman in her yellow raincoat and green baseball cap with her ALLEZ OPI-OMI! cardboard sign. I must be suffering some PSTD.
Hi Si, re:calendar, there are at least two dates for Christmas, the orthodox church celebrates Christmas on Jan 6th. I feel its important to clear this up and also add to the seasonal confusion.
Food for thought. As a retired math and science teacher you should be comparing median cycle time vs averages. For example almost every Zwift ride I and perhaps many others do involves a very short warmup and often a short cooldown separate from the main ride/upload. The short rides drastically affects my average value but the median is more true to how I rode that “ride” It would be the total of my middle longer distance!
Wouldn't the median duration in that scenario be the cooldown part though? Of course, in total that depends on how many outdoor rides you do and how long those are. Maybe it would make sense for Strava to include a category for warmup and cooldown rides that aren't included in the averages. Or people just have to do their own statistics.
I took up cycling towards the beginning of the first lockdown (June 2020) so still a bit of a noob. This year I have averaged 31km a ride and my average ride time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. That said, most of my road rides have been longer than 31k with the shorter ones being on Zwift. Although it's Zwift that has upped my average speed.
I think of winter as starting on Halloween and ending on groundhog day. This is the three- month period with the least daylight. These are the cross quarter days. Halloween is about the time when temperatures drop and rain starts where I live, about 45 degrees north.
My average ride is 47 km and 2:22 h. I hit the 12,000 km marker in November... but wont be hitting the 13,000 km before the end of the year, as December is a too dark to ride during the week enough.
Yes, please re-visit the stats taking out the indoor trainers. I mean, some of my indoor sessions are merely to warm up (high spin rate, little load, short time) before actual rides. It's ridiculous to count those. I have a suspicion that the average ride lengths in wealthier countries would then lengthen substantially as these are the cultures who can also afford indoor trainers the most. I think we'd all like to see actual outdoor ride data the next time.
My average ride so far this year was 3 hrs 54 mins (168 hrs over 43 rides, a mixture of Road and MTB, at an average speed of 21.4km). Planning to squeeze in one more longish one next week to get the average up to the 4 hour mark and earn myself a guilt free Christmas feast :)
I'm male 39 from Indonesia & i got coronary heart disease (CHD) on April 2021. After that i start to cycling everyday (before that i used to cycling weekly or monthly). My average speed improved a lot from 19 kph before CHD to nearly 27 kph now. They mark this feat as 'Healthy men'. 1hr17mins was my commute to work. LOL When I go touring, 20 miles between stops, or 1hr 30mins ish. 13.5mph = 21.75kmh. ( Close to average ). My FTP is 235. I call it winter when I have to put on more than a jersey and shorts. I live in California so that could very well be December. I'm getting ready to do a short ride at about 40° F. I've ordered some winter kit but it's not here yet, so..long sleeved running shirt, t-shirt, and basic cargo shorts. Cheers 🙂
Oh, man! I live in Japan, and, if I can't commute by bike, I usually squeeze a 1:10-1:20 bike ride. That is the time for a great climb(Rokko Driveway, 700 meters) or a quick ride around the closest artificial island(a 27km ride, coincidentally). On my free days I do a 3-6 hour ride, 65-120km. That is why I prefer to commute, which lets me put almost 100km extra...

This is "The Law of Large Numbers." Most viewers are saying "Hey that's just about me!" on the average ride numbers. Of course, that's statistics. It's like the jelly bean in jar guessing game; huge range of guesses, but the average of the guesses is very close to the number of jelly beans. Math rules again!
Personally I would want that the mid of the winter is on the shortest day of the year and the mid of the summer on the longest. But I think temperature wish you should push the start of the winter more forward since january and beginning of february are the coldest times on average, so that should then be the mid of the winter.
How do you compare to the ‘average’ cyclist?
The Strava data (I assume) would be very much selection biased by GDP/socio-economic factors.
Sadly, not well. Not at all.
No surprise, I'm above average on all categories... so my mum was correct.

Winter begins for me when daylight savings time ends. Then it is dark when I get out of work for at least three months.
Seeing the opening form the Detroit Velodrome is sad these days- as the structure was blown apart over the weekend after the blower keeping it inflated lost power on a very windy day here in the midwest of the US.

Now we know why Dan is MVP's favorite GCN presenter
This past year of riding was: Avg Ride Dist: 34.1miles / 54.8km, Avg Ride Time: 2hrs, Avg Ride Elev: 1,311ft / 400m - mix of road and gravel. Winter starts Dec 1st and ends Feb 28th. :)
Was that intro a puppet? I saw the ventriloquist’s lips move!!!
Scottish summer ends at 9pm on August the 1st. Scottish winter starts at 9.01pm on August the 1st.

Most expensive chain drop:
Dropped the chain on my front derailleur, tried to upshift and pedal forward and ripped the power meter off my crank.
Ouch!
An hour outdoors would be a short ride for me, but an hour on Zwift is about all I have interest in.
What is the longest tunnel, you are allowed to cycle through? My longest tunnel was 3000m+ in Italy

I'm male 39 from Indonesia & i got coronary heart disease (CHD) on April 2021. After that i start to cycling everyday (before that i used to cycling weekly or monthly). My average speed improved a lot from 19 kph before CHD to nearly 27 kph now. Before got CHD i used zeopoxa app but after got CHD i used zepp and strava app. I'm riding XC full suspension bike with 26"x1.95 tires. The bonus is 20 kg weight loss and reduction of cholesterol level

When I go touring, 20 miles between stops, or 1hr 30mins ish. 13.5mph = 21.75kmh. ( Close to average ).

Cheers 🙂
Caption: Mathew "Oh how I envy Dan. Beer is always the way.

A choice of two captions:
MvdP: “How much progress have you made on your indoor training schedule? Is it Zwift half time?”
Dan: “It’s always time for a swift half!”

He replied: “I’ll have a beer thanks!”
