love this song because it mentions his fans not going to his funeral knowing his ashes are in a trash bag, referencing "Oh Lord" where in the first line he says he doesn't care what happens to his ashes and to put them in a trash bag. NF is just a lyrical genius.

I absolutely loved this reaction and loved the song, like all NF songs really. I know this has already been said but his last line is the outcast finally returns, which is a reference to his song outcast where he talks about being an outcast in the industry. And I almost forgot but the buried in trash bag reference is a shout out to Oh Lord, another one of his songs. I really love how NF is always intertwining his music into one amazing movie

Just so you know too, Returns has a few potential Eminem disses in it- drop the “T and A feels like it’s only me” us also “EM”, “Gun Jamming” might reference Eminem’s “Killshot”, “Self Esteem” is an Eminem song and NF tells him to cover it in gasoline and light it.
Eminem might mention NF once too- during a line he quotes “an eff’ing Recovery clone of me” which could be “NF’ing a recovery clone of me” which somewhat fits the NF bill (although NF does it better).
Dude you're so right. I feel like there is so much potential for diss tracks here. For one, he finally "returns" the diss right back. All of NFs song titles have a clear meaning, but this one is hidden. The part where he says "till I open up on the beat with all my THERAPY work", I've heard someone mention this has the exact same cadence and beat as Eminems kamikaze title track where Em says "in my THERAPY chair, my d*** is the hare like the sheriff". NF also says "while I'm wearing my merch stomping on your arrogant turf", meaning he's gonna drop bars at the same rhythm/cadence as your song and reference a key theme word through NFs music, therapy. NF also says "I've patiently been waiting please I think it's time for my turn", a reference to the 50 cent song with EM, patiently waiting for a track to explode on, and for NF, it's "Returns", also EMs been on top for so long, there's no reason that there isn't room for a new upcoming artist to have a turn at doing great in the industry. I feel like there are too many possible references and coincidences in this track for it to not be a subliminal lyrical battle between him and EM. Everything is so generic, yet there are discrete subtleties that reference EM.
And as you pointed out, EM called him out on the ringer "NFing recovery clone of me". Why is EM not cursing here? He always curses. Coincidentally, NF NEVER curses. And recovery, has to do with therapy, again a major theme in NFs music. This all cannot be a coincidence.
One of the hardest bars in this song is “real scary carry the verse” which is referring to the scary movie Carrie. Carrie was a high school girl who was an outcast and after getting bullied so much she murdered anyone who got in her way. NF being an outcast himself and also having a song named outcast makes this bar a double entendre. So NF is basically saying he’s killin’ the verses, which is clearly shown in this song.

So this NF song has tons of references to "OH Lord" and "Outcast" but where he is referring to "adding him to your hit list, write a cocky bar and act like you are close to me" and "bars that are not landing" has been talked about in regards to Eminem. Eminem made the song "Fall" dissing on a lot of rappers and in that song he talks about Tyler the Creator and Em has a bar in that song talking about Tyler and another 2 letter rapper, NF because he states "Another MFing clone of me" also poking at NF being a clean rapper and uses the line MFing instead of NFing. It is a small little shoutout to get a reaction and it worked. NF shit back with this one and the song "Green Lights" in regards to Eminem. I believe both songs are NF saying he isn't scared of the Goat or anyone "a.k.a up in the clouds"! Hence why in the song titled "Clouds" he states cocky like that "Hope Nate doesn't go Hollywood" meaning hope he doesn't go after anyone major label or doesn't turn into these other fake, no bars Hollywood artists. He created his own label called Real Music. I believe so that he remembers to stay real with himself, don't change for anyone and remember where his roots are. I am and will always be an NF fan. Many think this song is a response to Eminem dissing him on the Ringer. NF fans refuse to believe Eminem did, but he did. I grew up on MMLP and The Eminem Show. Eminem doesn’t make mistakes. On it he says “an effin recovery clone version of me.” An (makes it sound like N) Eff (F) … recovery was the album Eminem came back clean from drugs. NF doesn’t swear. So he’s the recovery (clean) version of Eminem. Eminem also chose to say effin to make it sound like F in NF and we know Eminem swears but who doesn’t? NF. NF was asked in an interview about it. He said he heard the bar but wouldn’t give comment to it. He maintained what he has said his whole career… he won’t be dragged into industry beefs until he is called out BY name. He has always said that. Way before this and way after it. But I absolutely think Eminem did.
You are SPOT on with this. Ima huge NF fan, but also a HUGE eminem fan also. As you said, EM doesn't make mistakes. And neither does NF. there are way too many possible references and coincidences for this track to not be a subliminal response to eminem. Also, the name of the track is literally "Returns"! NF's song titles always have meaning, yet this is hidden, unless you count the title "returns" as in the shots fired; "these bullets form in my mind and come out my mouth *pop *pop *pop". He is definitely returning fire. Also, I think the fact that he is so subliminal and the fact the people cannot concretely say whether it is a response or not, similar to eminem's bar on "ringer", I think EM might also like that and welcome that challenge. Kind of like "ok here's a dude that's actually skilled enough to battle me at this very tongue in cheek subliminal level". I don't think em has ever had that. That's a very rare way to do battle, and they're both so unbelievably lyrical that they can have a long hidden battle with each other, in a "challenge accepted but respected" kind of way. NF saying he'll never engage in open battle until he's called out by name is a way he can assure EM that he's never gonna use EMs name explicitly in a battle for more attention, and therefore re-assure eminem "yeah I don't need to tell people that I'm beefing with you to get followers, I already got that. Let's keep battling". People using their "beef time" with EM as a way to get "millions of views" is something EM calls out countless people for on his kamikaze album. So eminem could be like, "ok so here's a legit chance to battle this young rapper who everyone says sounds like me and who actually might have talent". It's like a legit way to battle a rapper in an oldschool way without worrying about all the attention the younger rapper might be getting, and because it's so subliminal, you can always deny it because it is not closely stated. It's probably a rare opportunity for someone like em to battle someone who can keep up, and definitely for NF because he gets to battle one of his biggest influences, and in turn get some kind of recognition from him. This is so deep. But I think they are definitely communicating with each other under the text that only they both truly know what's going on, and that's a special opportunity for famous rappers that get almost zero privacy. If that's what's going on, they'll never mention that for as long as possible.
NF actually may have issued the first misfire diss to eminem on his outro track saying "it's not because I'm a rap god, I dont need you people to bow to me".
Whether EM actually likes NF or not is irrelevant. I think em could've heard this and been like "ok I'm gonna give a brief and almost subtle shot at him on ringer." And then after NF responds with "Returns", EM is like "ok we actually got a good battle here. but eminem always gives respect to artists that earned it, especially the one's that he's inspired. I'm sure he's heard of this "NF" rapper that's always compared to him. But it's hard to believe that EM wouldn't have some kind of respect for NF after these lyric sparring matches, especially considering how much they both have in common. I think EM could say there's a lot of similarities, but also NF's sound is so unique that he clearly has carved out his own style and sound from the beginning, that has always been separate from EM.
