Columbus is very dynamic year to year and hop lot to hop lot. It can be great or it can be terrible (think onion and garlic). That said, it can make an amazing single hop Pale Ale that includes a healthy dry hop. I've also used it in Porter/Stouts with much success. Columbus is also a favourite in a Black IPA.
I was actually just ordering ingredients for a pliny the elder clone and the recipe called for Columbus. I could only get a hold of CTZ and now thanks to this i know its exactly the same thing!
20 IBUs is not alway expressed the same way from hop to hop. I’ve found it takes experience with a hop to dial it in exactly. Would it be better to bitter the beer with a known quantity such as Magnum and then do a 1 oz addition at 5 minutes and an oz. At knockout? That would seem to highlight what the hop has to offer instead of a nearly 1/3 oz addition. Just a thought.
Would love to see a Hop Chronicle for Nugget this time next year - Troegs just released their Nugget Nectar for the year and I think it’s an underrated SMASH hop

Interesting I had a nice experience making smash pale ale with ctz but I just used a bunch of it (4g/l) in flameout and did a no-chill.
Agree. Missing a lot of what a hop can be without hopstand/dry hopping it. I use CTZ in my West Coast IPA and get a lot of dank flavor/aroma that I'm guessing you can't get with just boil additions.
I tell you a nice story. When I watched your video about Kazbek hops (super saaz) I ordered a batch for my simple and delicious pale lager I often brew with saaz. Make a guess. The kazbek pale lager turned out to be so 1 dimentional, that I was looking for the error since then. I had to gift the whole batch, because I was unhappy. Interesting correlation with your case of a 1 dimentional pale lager :-)
I have used the Hop Chronicles recipe for this beer many times. Doesn't it have a flame out and dry hop charge too? When the article came it out, it caught my eye because the brewer notes said that this was one of his favorite/most complex single hop beers.
Free keg of beer? lol. One of the main reasons I bottle still is so I can give it away without fuss. Just hand someone a six pack. You could do that with that homebrew club you've visited.
My point is while using a tiny amount of hops might indeed showcase certain flavors and aromas, it’s crucial to recognize that relying solely on this approach may not fully represent the diverse spectrum of hop characteristics. By using multiple hop charges, we can offer a more comprehensive exploration of hop profiles. Employing one batch with minimal hops and another with a heavy dry hop allows us to compare and contrast the subtleties versus the intensity of hop flavors and aromas, providing a more nuanced understanding.
I’m in Raleigh I can stop by, I’m the guy who bought your grain mill lol

Just brewed an 8% strong ale with CTZ and Mosaic. It’s fantastic

I understand that is always been like this, but to really get every aspect of an hop, I think you should brew an IPA.

@@ryanking6312 Yep, I do Ctz/chinook/centennial in my IPA...it's a dank/grapefruit bomb! My favourite combo.
Nice test and video. First comment here from Brazil! Cheers
Had no clue about the background of CTZ! Haven’t used it much but seems like a solid hop….to pair with others 😂 Cheers 🍻

I like CTZ to pair with others, I’m curious did somebody already pick up the keg ? Cheers 🍻 mate
I'm going to be in Raliegh NC on January 10th & 11th for business. I'd be interested in a growler fill of your beer but can not a keg swap.
Raleigh, NC is close to Tokyo, Japan right? I'll be over in a jiff
Only 6,931 miles. lol

The hopping rate for our THC Pale Ale series are different than that for our THC pale lager series.

I will drive over from Winston-Salem ASAP.
How many micron is your hop spider ?
How is the lager still so cloudy after 5 months?
Asking the real questions here.
Do you have a 240 v brewfather profile for the Clawhammer system?
Lol, too bad I don't live in NC anymore or I would totally take you up on that offer 😂
Wish I lived closer.
CTZ is delicious ❤

I guess I'm a month late to come get the beer? haha
Im in the raleifh area
Can you ship the beer to sweden ? Naa JK but do you want swedish beer to try?
I don’t know about US, but here in New Zealand it’s technically illegal to give away home brew… boooooooooo 👎
So why call a series HOP chronicles and use little to no hops?
Amount of hops is a variable. Why not?!
Small additions can reveal more subtle characteristics which are not as percievable with a heavy dose
Because everything is the same EXCEPT for the hops. Making the series all about the hops.

Seems fine to me
